Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Beneath the Drawing

The symbol behind Lily’s drawing was not supposed to exist.

Adrian Moretti stared at the small mark reflected on the black surface of the car window, his entire body becoming still.

Evan Cole noticed immediately.

In all the years he had worked beside Adrian, he had learned one thing.

The more silent Adrian became, the more dangerous the situation was.

"Boss," Evan said quietly. "Are you sure?"

Adrian didn’t answer.

His fingers moved slowly across the glass, carefully avoiding the red crayon lines Lily had drawn.

The little girl’s artwork covered most of the door.

A tall figure.

A small figure.

A crooked sun.

Something innocent.

Something no one should have been able to connect to the symbol hidden beneath it.

But Adrian knew exactly what he was looking at.

Because he had seen it once before.

Twenty years ago.

On a document that changed his entire family.

"Where did she get this?" Evan asked.

Adrian looked toward the servants’ building.

Toward the small window where Claire and Lily lived.

"I don't know."

That answer bothered Evan more than anything else.

Adrian Moretti always knew.

He knew which companies moved money through the city.

He knew which politicians were lying.

He knew which people around him were loyal and which were waiting for weakness.

But tonight, he didn't know how a three-year-old child had drawn something connected to the darkest secret of his life.

A small movement behind the window caught Adrian’s attention.

Claire stood there.

Watching.

Afraid.

Adrian walked toward the building.

Evan followed.

"Boss."

Adrian stopped.

"What?"

"If that symbol is what we think it is..."

Adrian looked back.

His expression was cold.

"Then someone has been inside my house without me knowing."

The sentence made Evan uncomfortable.

Because that was impossible.

The Moretti estate was protected better than most government buildings.

Every entrance had cameras.

Every employee was checked.

Every visitor was recorded.

Nobody entered.

Nobody left.

Not without Adrian knowing.

But someone had left a message.

And a child had accidentally revealed it.

Claire opened the door before Adrian knocked.

She had been expecting anger.

She had spent the last hour imagining every possible way she could lose her job.

But she was not expecting Adrian to look at her like he was searching for an answer.

"Where did Lily learn that drawing?"

Claire blinked.

"What?"

"The symbol."

Her face changed.

"What symbol?"

Adrian watched her carefully.

Claire looked genuinely confused.

That was important.

Because Adrian had spent his entire life learning how to recognize lies.

Fear.

Guilt.

Hesitation.

Claire had all three.

But not because she was hiding something.

Because she was scared of him.

"Mr. Moretti, I swear she was just coloring."

"I know."

The calmness of his voice surprised her.

"You know?"

Adrian looked toward Lily’s room.

"Your daughter doesn’t understand what she drew."

Claire slowly relaxed.

"Then why are you asking?"

Because Adrian didn’t know how to explain it.

How could he tell a maid that her three-year-old daughter had recreated a symbol connected to the death of his father?

How could he explain that the drawing looked almost identical to a mark found on an old photograph hidden in his family archives?

Instead, he asked another question.

"Did Lily ever meet anyone from my family?"

Claire frowned.

"No."

"Anyone who visits the estate?"

"No."

"Anyone who gave her something?"

Claire thought.

Then she shook her head.

"No."

Adrian studied her.

"Think carefully."

Claire became defensive.

"Mr. Moretti, Lily is three years old. She colors pictures. She talks to stuffed animals. She doesn't know anything about your family."

Adrian remained quiet.

Claire immediately regretted raising her voice.

"I'm sorry."

But Adrian didn't seem offended.

Instead, he looked past her.

At the small bedroom.

The place where Lily slept.

"Can I talk to her?"

Claire hesitated.

A few hours earlier, she would have been terrified by the idea.

But something had changed.

The man standing in front of her had every reason to be angry.

Yet he had protected her daughter.

He had protected the drawing.

She stepped aside.

Lily was sitting on the floor with her stuffed rabbit.

When she saw Adrian, she smiled.

"Mr. Adrian."

Adrian stopped.

Nobody called him that.

People called him Mr. Moretti.

Boss.

Sir.

Never simply Adrian.

"Why are you awake?"

Lily held up her rabbit.

"He was scared."

Adrian looked at the toy.

"Your rabbit?"

She nodded.

"He doesn't like dark rooms."

For a moment, Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Lily looked at him.

"Are you scared too?"

The question caught him completely off guard.

"No."

Lily tilted her head.

"Everybody says no when they are."

Claire looked away.

Adrian stared at the child.

He had spent years surrounded by people who wanted things from him.

Money.

Power.

Protection.

Nobody asked if he was scared.

Nobody cared.

Except a little girl with a red crayon.

"What made you draw the symbol?"

Lily looked confused.

"What symbol?"

"The mark."

She looked at him.

Then at her rabbit.

Then she pointed toward the window.

"I saw it."

Claire immediately looked up.

"You saw what?"

Lily walked to the window.

She was too small to reach the handle, so she pointed outside.

"That man made it."

Adrian’s expression changed.

"What man?"

Lily looked at him innocently.

"The man who talks to the flowers."

The room became silent.

Claire slowly stood.

"Lily..."

"What man?" Adrian repeated.

The little girl walked back.

"He comes when Mommy is working."

Claire’s face went pale.

"I don't know anyone like that."

Adrian looked at her.

"You didn't see him?"

Claire shook her head.

"No."

"When?"

Lily counted on her fingers.

"At night."

"How many times?"

She thought.

"Three."

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

"Did he talk to you?"

Lily nodded.

"What did he say?"

The little girl hugged her rabbit.

"He said..."

She stopped.

Adrian waited.

Claire waited.

Even the air seemed to stop moving.

"What did he say, Lily?"

The child whispered:

"He said my mommy was going to leave this house soon."

Claire froze.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

"Did he tell you his name?"

Lily nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Who was he?"

The little girl looked directly at Adrian.

And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.

"He said his name was..."

Before she could finish, Adrian’s phone rang.

The sound cut through the room.

Everyone jumped.

Adrian looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice came through.

An old voice.

A voice Adrian hadn’t heard in fifteen years.

"Adrian."

His entire face changed.

Because only one person called him that.

Everyone else used his title.

Everyone else feared him.

But this person had never feared him.

"Who is this?" Evan asked from outside the room.

Adrian ignored him.

The voice continued.

"You need to look at the drawing again."

Adrian’s eyes moved toward Lily.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"The child didn’t draw the symbol."

Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.

"She copied it."

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Adrian slowly walked back toward the car.

Toward the drawing.

Toward the impossible mark hidden beneath the red crayon.

Claire followed behind him.

"What is happening?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he had just realized something worse than someone entering his estate.

Someone had been watching Lily.

Watching Claire.

Watching him.

And they had been close enough to know exactly what Lily would draw.

When Adrian reached the car, he wiped away a small section of the red crayon.

Underneath was a second message.

Not a symbol.

Words.

Five small letters written in a place nobody should have been able to reach.

Adrian stared at them.

Then Evan stepped closer.

"Boss..."

Adrian didn’t move.

May you like

Because the handwriting belonged to the one person he believed had died fifteen years ago.

And beneath the hidden message was a name he never expected to see again...
