Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Came Back From The Dead

Adrian Moretti forgot how to breathe.
For fifteen years, he had imagined this moment.
Sometimes in dreams.
Sometimes in nightmares.
Sometimes during the long hours before sunrise when the entire city was silent and his mind refused to be.
He had imagined finding Marco’s grave.
He had imagined discovering the truth.
He had imagined revenge.
But he had never imagined this.
Marco Moretti standing in his hallway.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably him.
The same eyes.
The same scar above his eyebrow.
The same expression that used to annoy Adrian when they were children because Marco always looked like he knew something nobody else did.
Behind Adrian, Claire held Lily tightly.
Evan reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
Adrian lifted one hand.
Stop.
Nobody moved.
Because even Evan understood.
This was not a normal threat.
This was a ghost.
"Marco."
The name came out quietly.
The man standing across the hallway smiled sadly.
"I wondered if you would still remember me."
Adrian stared at him.
"You're dead."
Marco looked down at the old photograph in his hand.
"That's what they wanted you to believe."
The words hit harder than any bullet.
Claire looked between the two brothers.
"You know him?"
Adrian didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because every memory he had spent fifteen years burying was suddenly standing in front of him.
Marco stepped closer.
Evan immediately moved.
"One more step and—"
"Let him," Adrian interrupted.
Evan looked at him.
"Boss..."
"Let him."
The security chief lowered his hand.
Marco noticed.
"You still trust the same people."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"Why are you here?"
Marco looked toward Lily.
And for the first time, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Concern.
"Because she found the message."
Adrian became still.
"You know about the drawing?"
Marco nodded.
"I know more than that."
"Explain."
Marco looked around the hallway.
"Not here."
Adrian didn't move.
"You disappear for fifteen years, return to my home, and tell me we need privacy?"
Marco gave a tired smile.
"You always were impatient."
"And you always talked too much."
For one second, something almost normal passed between them.
Like two brothers arguing in the kitchen years ago.
Then it disappeared.
Because both men remembered.
They weren't those people anymore.
The meeting happened in Adrian’s private study.
No guards.
No employees.
Only Adrian, Marco, Evan, Claire, and Lily sleeping upstairs.
The old photograph sat on the desk.
Adrian stared at it.
"Start talking."
Marco sat across from him.
"That night, I didn't die."
Adrian remained silent.
"I was taken."
"By who?"
Marco looked at the window.
"Someone inside the family."
The answer was exactly what Adrian feared.
"Who?"
Marco didn't answer immediately.
That hesitation told Adrian everything.
"You know."
Marco looked back at him.
"I know who planned it."
"Name."
"Not yet."
Adrian stood.
"Fifteen years, Marco."
His voice became colder.
"Fifteen years I believed you were dead."
"I know."
"I buried you."
"I know."
"I destroyed people because I thought they were responsible."
"I know."
Adrian slammed his hand against the desk.
"Then tell me!"
The room went silent.
Marco didn't react.
Instead, he said something Adrian never expected.
"I stayed away because I was protecting you."
Adrian laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
"Protecting me?"
"Yes."
"By letting me believe you were dead?"
"Yes."
"By letting me build an empire on a lie?"
Marco looked at him.
"Your empire was built on a lie before I disappeared."
The sentence stopped him.
"What does that mean?"
Marco leaned forward.
"Our father wasn't killed because of a rival family."
Adrian stared.
"What?"
"He was killed because he discovered someone inside our organization was selling information."
Evan looked up.
"Impossible."
Marco glanced at him.
"You were young then. You didn't see everything."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Who?"
Marco looked at the photograph.
"The person who helped me disappear."
"Why would someone help you disappear?"
"Because they wanted me alive."
"Who?"
Marco took a breath.
"The same person who left that symbol."
Adrian looked toward the folder on the desk.
The drawing.
The symbol.
The hidden message.
Everything connected.
"Why Lily?"
Marco’s expression softened.
"Because Lily isn't the target."
Claire stepped forward.
"Then who is?"
Marco looked at her.
And Adrian noticed something.
Recognition.
Marco knew Claire.
Or at least knew something about her.
Adrian immediately noticed.
"Why are you looking at her like that?"
Marco looked away.
"Because I know her husband."
Claire froze.
"My husband?"
"Daniel Bennett."
The color disappeared from Claire’s face.
"How do you know Daniel?"
Marco didn't answer.
Adrian noticed.
Again.
A hesitation.
Another secret.
"Marco."
The warning in Adrian’s voice was clear.
Marco sighed.
"Daniel wasn't just a mechanic."
Claire stared.
"What?"
"He worked with us."
"No."
"He helped your father."
"My father?"
The room became silent.
Claire looked confused.
"My father died before I was born."
Marco shook his head.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"What are you saying?"
Marco looked directly at Claire.
"Your father was one of the people who knew the truth about our family."
Claire stepped backward.
"You're lying."
"I wish I was."
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"My husband never told me any of this."
"Because he was trying to protect you."
Claire looked toward the stairs.
Toward Lily.
Everything she believed about her life was changing.
Adrian watched her carefully.
For the first time, he understood.
Claire wasn't connected to this by accident.
She had been placed in his estate.
Not by chance.
Someone had moved her there.
Someone had planned everything.
The question was why.
Later that night, Adrian stood outside Lily’s room.
He watched the little girl sleep.
The same child who had walked into his life with a red crayon and changed everything.
Marco stood behind him.
"You care about her."
Adrian didn't look back.
"She's a child."
"That's not what I asked."
Silence.
Marco smiled slightly.
"You haven't changed."
"Neither have you."
"Actually, I have."
Adrian looked at him.
"How?"
Marco looked toward Lily.
"Fifteen years hiding changes a person."
Adrian studied his brother.
"Where have you been?"
Marco looked away.
"Running."
"From who?"
"Everyone."
"That isn't an answer."
"No."
Marco turned back.
"Because the real answer is worse."
Before Adrian could ask, Evan appeared at the end of the hallway.
"Boss."
Adrian immediately noticed his expression.
"What happened?"
Evan held a tablet.
"We found the person who entered the estate."
Adrian walked toward him.
"Show me."
Evan opened the file.
A security image appeared.
A person walking through the garden.
The face was hidden.
But the timestamp was clear.
The person had entered the estate three nights before.
The same night Lily first saw him.
Adrian stared.
"Enhance."
Evan did.
The image sharpened.
Claire covered her mouth.
Because she recognized the clothes.
The posture.
The way the person walked.
"No..."
Adrian looked at her.
"You know him?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
But her voice said otherwise.
Marco stepped closer.
Then he saw the image.
His face changed instantly.
Because he recognized the man too.
"That's impossible."
Adrian looked between them.
"Who is it?"
Neither answered.
Then the tablet received a new notification.
A message.
From the same unknown number that called Adrian earlier.
Evan opened it.
One sentence appeared.
Adrian read it.
And his entire expression changed.
Because the message was not a threat.
It was a warning.
"Ask Claire who she really works for."
At that exact moment, the lights in the mansion went out.
Every door in the hallway locked automatically.
May you like
And from the darkness, someone whispered Claire’s name...
"Claire Bennett..."
