Chapter 6 - The Truth Charles Buried

“Run!”
Adrian grabbed Charles’s chair.
Security cut the restraints.
Elena lifted Noah.
Sofia pulled open the elevator.
The timer hit forty-seven seconds.
Rachel had disappeared.
They packed into the elevator.
Nothing happened.
Adrian hit the button.
Again.
No power.
“Stairs.”
A guard found the emergency door.
Locked.
Charles staggered toward a red panel.
“Manual release.”
He smashed the glass.
Pulled the lever.
The door opened.
Thirty-two seconds.
They climbed.
Elena carried Noah until Adrian took him.
Noah wrapped his arms around Adrian’s neck.
Twenty seconds.
One floor.
Two.
They reached the loading dock.
Ten seconds.
Everyone ran into the street.
The blast behind them was smaller than Elena expected.
Not a fireball.
A deep concussion.
Windows rattled.
Smoke poured from a basement vent.
Police sirens began almost immediately.
Noah cried.
Adrian held him.
Elena took him back.
She kissed his face.
“You’re safe.”
Charles sat against a wall.
Blood darkened one sleeve.
Sofia knelt.
“You’re hurt.”
“I’ve had worse.”
Adrian looked at his father.
“Tell me everything.”
Charles nodded.
For once, he did.
Rachel Voss had been laundering client assets through offshore accounts for years.
Victor helped.
Charles discovered irregularities in 2021.
Instead of going immediately to federal investigators, he tried to contain it internally.
Sofia found the same records through Bellman Legal.
Rachel marked her as a threat.
Victor began following her.
Charles found out Adrian was seeing Sofia.
He assumed she was using his son to get leverage.
So he intercepted communications.
Then the crash happened.
“Rachel ordered it?” Adrian asked.
Charles nodded.
“Yes.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
Charles continued.
“When Sofia survived, I moved her.”
“And told us she was dead,” Elena said.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Rachel had people watching the hospital.”
“You could have told me.”
Charles looked at her.
“I did not know who I could trust.”
Elena’s voice sharpened.
“So you trusted yourself with everyone else’s life.”
Charles accepted the hit.
“Yes.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You stole four years.”
Charles’s face finally broke.
“I know.”
“You stole my son.”
“I know.”
“You stole Sofia.”
“I know.”
Adrian stepped away.
Sofia watched him.
Elena held Noah.
Police entered the building.
Federal agents arrived within an hour after Adrian turned over copies of the drives.
Rachel Voss disappeared.
Victor survived the gunshot and was taken under guard to the hospital.
The basement explosion had been designed to destroy records, not collapse the tower.
By sunset, Sterling Financial was surrounded by reporters.
Elena wanted only one thing.
Home.
Except home no longer felt safe.
Adrian arranged a hotel suite under security.
Elena refused twice.
Then Noah fell asleep against her shoulder.
She agreed.
Sofia came too.
The room had two bedrooms.
Elena put Noah in one.
Sofia stood at the doorway.
“Can I sit with him?”
Elena hesitated.
Then nodded.
Sofia sat beside the bed.
She did not touch him.
Just watched.
After several minutes, Elena joined her.
“He snores when he’s tired.”
Sofia smiled through tears.
“So did our dad.”
Elena looked at her.
“I hated you today.”
“I know.”
“I still might tomorrow.”
“I know.”
“But I’m glad you’re alive.”
Sofia covered her face.
Elena hugged her.
Four years of grief broke open.
They cried quietly beside the sleeping boy.
Later, Adrian arrived.
He stood outside the door.
Elena stepped into the hallway.
“How’s Charles?”
“Hospital.”
“Serious?”
“No.”
She nodded.
Adrian leaned against the wall.
“I resigned.”
Elena stared.
“From Sterling Financial?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I walked into that lobby this morning and treated you like you were nothing.”
“That is not why.”
“No.”
He looked toward Noah’s room.
“It’s part of why.”
Elena crossed her arms.
“What happens now?”
“Federal investigation.”
“I meant with Noah.”
Adrian was quiet.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s the first smart answer you’ve given all day.”
He smiled faintly.
“I want to know him.”
“I know.”
“I’m not asking to take him.”
“Good.”
“I’m not asking him to call me Dad.”
“He already knows you are.”
Adrian looked down.
“That scares me.”
“It should.”
He nodded.
“I’ll do whatever you need.”
Elena studied him.
She had spent years imagining Noah’s father as a coward.
A rich man who abandoned Sofia.
Reality was messier.
Adrian had been cruel that morning.
Arrogant.
Entitled.
But he had also run into a basement with a bomb ticking.
People could be more than one thing.
That did not erase harm.
It did make judgment harder.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
YOU THINK RACHEL WORKED ALONE?
Elena’s stomach dropped.
Adrian saw her face.
“What?”
She showed him.
Another message arrived.
ASK SOFIA WHAT SHE DID IN CHICAGO.
Elena turned toward the bedroom.
Sofia was standing in the doorway.
Her face had gone white.
Adrian noticed.
“What happened in Chicago?”
Sofia said nothing.
Elena stepped closer.
“Sofia.”
“I wanted to tell you.”
The words were almost inaudible.
“Tell me what?”
Sofia looked toward the sleeping Noah.
Then at Adrian.
“After I disappeared, Charles didn’t send me straight into hiding.”
Adrian frowned.
“Where did he send you?”
Sofia swallowed.
“Chicago.”
“For what?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“To meet Rachel.”
Elena stared.
“You met her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because at first…”
Sofia stopped.
Elena’s voice hardened.
“At first what?”
Sofia looked at her.
“At first, Rachel was the person who helped me fake my death.”
The hotel room went completely silent.
Then someone knocked on the door.
Three slow knocks.
Security called from the hallway.
“Ms. Morales?”
Elena looked toward the lock.
The guard continued.
“There’s a woman here asking for Sofia.”
Sofia stopped breathing.
“Who?”
May you like
A voice answered from the other side.
“Rachel.”
