Chapter 5 - The Boy on the Thirty-Second Floor

The blackout lasted nine seconds.
It was enough.
When emergency lights came on, Victor was gone.
Adrian ran.
Security split.
Elena grabbed Sofia.
“Noah.”
“We go now.”
They raced toward the street.
Adrian called Daniel repeatedly.
No answer.
Sterling Financial was seven minutes away by car.
They made it in four.
The lobby was chaos.
Security gates locked.
Employees gathered behind barriers.
Elena ran past everyone.
“Where is he?”
A guard stopped her.
“Ma’am—”
“My son!”
Adrian appeared.
“Let her through.”
They reached thirty-two.
Daniel was sitting against the wall outside conference room B, blood at his temple.
Elena dropped beside him.
“Noah?”
Daniel blinked.
“I’m sorry.”
“Where?”
“A woman came in.”
“What woman?”
“She had a badge.”
“Where is Noah?”
“She said she was taking him downstairs.”
Elena’s chest tightened until breathing became impossible.
Sofia grabbed her shoulders.
“Look at me.”
Elena shoved her away.
“Don’t tell me to look at you!”
“Elena—”
“If anything happens to him—”
“It won’t.”
“You don’t know that!”
Adrian returned with security.
“Building lockdown.”
Elena turned on him.
“You said he was safe.”
Adrian flinched.
“You said.”
“I know.”
“You brought this into his life.”
“So did I,” Sofia whispered.
Elena looked at both of them.
“You had four years of secrets. He had four years of peace.”
Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Noah’s voice.
“Mommy?”
Elena grabbed the phone.
“Noah!”
“I’m okay.”
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know.”
A woman took the phone.
“You have the drive?”
Elena looked at Adrian.
“Yes.”
“South Street Seaport. Pier seventeen. Forty minutes.”
Sofia whispered, “No.”
The woman continued.
“No police.”
Adrian said, “Let me hear him again.”
“You’ll see him when I see the files.”
The line ended.
Sofia looked sick.
“I know that voice.”
Elena stared.
“Who?”
“Rachel Voss.”
Adrian frowned.
“The board member?”
Sofia nodded.
Adrian went still.
Rachel Voss had served on Sterling Financial’s board for eleven years.
She chaired risk oversight.
She had access to almost every internal audit.
Sofia’s notebook.
C.S.
Everyone had assumed Charles Sterling.
But initials could mean more than names.
“What was Rachel’s maiden name?” Sofia asked.
Adrian thought.
“Caroline Stevens.”
Sofia looked at him.
C.S.
Adrian understood.
“The notebook.”
Sofia nodded.
“The transfers weren’t Charles.”
Elena stared.
“Then why was Charles with Victor?”
“To investigate,” Sofia said.
Adrian looked shaken.
“My father may have known Rachel was involved.”
“Then why hide it from you?”
Sofia gave him a sad look.
“Because he never trusted anyone enough to tell the truth.”
Adrian called Charles.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
They ran upstairs.
Charles’s office was empty.
His assistant said he had left ten minutes earlier.
Destination unknown.
Adrian checked the parking garage.
Charles’s car remained.
Elena’s phone buzzed.
A text.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
DON’T TRUST THE PIER.
Attached was a photograph.
Charles Sterling.
Bound to a chair.
Elena showed Adrian.
His face drained.
“Rachel has him too.”
Sofia zoomed in.
“No.”
“What?”
“That room.”
She looked toward the windows.
“It’s in this building.”
Adrian stared.
“How do you know?”
“The walls.”
Gray acoustic panels.
Sterling Financial had only one floor with them.
The abandoned communications suite on twenty-six.
They ran.
Security entered first.
Door after door.
Empty rooms.
Then a faint sound.
A child humming.
Elena shoved past the guards.
“Noah!”
She followed the sound.
One room.
Locked.
Adrian kicked the door once.
Twice.
It opened.
Noah sat on the floor.
Alone.
Elena dropped beside him.
He wrapped both arms around her neck.
“I knew you’d come.”
She sobbed.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
“No, baby.”
She kissed his hair.
“Nothing about this is okay.”
Adrian stood in the doorway.
Noah looked at him.
“You came too.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
Noah reached one hand toward him.
Adrian hesitated.
Then took it.
For one strange moment, Elena saw what might have been.
A father.
A son.
A family built under less terrible circumstances.
Then Sofia found the note.
Taped beneath the chair.
Adrian opened it.
PIER 17 WAS A DISTRACTION.
YOU HAVE TWENTY MINUTES TO SAVE CHARLES.
Sofia looked up.
“Where?”
Another phone rang.
This one inside the room.
Adrian answered.
Rachel Voss spoke.
“You finally learned to look inside your own building.”
“Where’s my father?”
“Close.”
“Why Noah?”
“To make Elena move.”
“You could have killed him.”
“No.”
Rachel sounded almost offended.
“I don’t hurt children.”
Sofia laughed bitterly.
“You tried to kill a pregnant woman.”
A pause.
“Sofia.”
“You sound disappointed.”
“I am.”
Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.
“What do you want?”
“The drives.”
“Why now?”
“Because Victor panicked.”
“So you’re cleaning up.”
“I’m finishing what Charles refused to finish four years ago.”
Adrian looked at Sofia.
“What did he refuse?”
Rachel laughed softly.
“Ask him.”
“Where is he?”
“Thirty-eight.”
Adrian froze.
His father’s office.
They had just checked it.
Rachel continued.
“Not the office you know.”
The line went dead.
Sofia looked at the bookshelves.
Charles’s private door.
They ran back upstairs.
Adrian searched behind panels.
Nothing.
Elena noticed a narrow brass seam behind a painting.
She pressed.
A section of wall opened.
A hidden elevator.
Adrian stared.
“I’ve worked here twenty years.”
“And never knew,” Sofia said.
They entered.
Only one button.
B2.
Basement.
The elevator descended.
When the doors opened, Charles Sterling sat tied to a chair inside a concrete room.
Victor stood beside him.
Rachel Voss stood near a metal table.
She smiled.
“You brought everyone.”
Security raised weapons.
Rachel pressed a small remote.
A red light appeared on a box beneath Charles’s chair.
“Careful.”
Adrian stopped.
Rachel looked at Noah.
“I told you not to bring the child.”
Elena held him close.
“You took him.”
“To get your attention.”
Victor looked irritated.
“This has gone far enough.”
Rachel glanced at him.
“For you, yes.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Rachel raised a gun.
One shot.
Victor fell.
Sofia screamed.
Noah buried his face against Elena.
Rachel lowered the weapon.
“He always talked too much.”
Adrian stared.
“You killed him.”
Rachel shrugged.
“He was already a liability.”
Charles lifted his head.
“Rachel.”
She turned.
“Still alive?”
“You won’t leave this building.”
“I already have.”
Rachel tapped the remote.
A timer began.
05:00.
Adrian looked beneath the chair.
“No.”
Rachel backed toward a service door.
“The financial evidence goes public, Charles dies.”
Sofia stepped forward.
“You’re bluffing.”
Rachel smiled.
“Test me.”
Adrian looked at his father.
Charles’s eyes met his.
“Let her go.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
“Save everyone else.”
“No.”
“Adrian.”
“No.”
Charles’s voice softened.
“For once in your life, listen.”
Rachel opened the service door.
Then Elena heard something.
A faint mechanical click.
Behind the wall.
She looked down.
A second red light.
Not beneath Charles.
Behind Noah.
The timer was not connected to the chair.
May you like
It was connected to the entire basement.
And the number had just reached sixty seconds.
