Chapter 3 - The Sister in the Locked Room

“Elena?”

Sofia Morales stood in the doorway.

Alive.

Older.

Thinner.

A pale scar crossed her temple.

But alive.

Elena could not move.

Neither could Adrian.

Noah looked between the adults.

Sofia’s eyes fell on him.

Her entire face collapsed.

“Noah.”

Elena grabbed him instinctively.

Sofia covered her mouth.

“My baby.”

Noah pressed closer to Elena.

“You know me?”

Sofia began crying.

Elena stepped between them.

“Stop.”

Sofia froze.

“Elena—”

“Stop right there.”

“I can explain.”

“You were dead.”

“I know.”

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“I raised your son.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Elena’s voice cracked.

“You knew?”

Adrian looked sharply at Sofia.

“You knew Elena had him?”

Sofia saw him.

The air changed again.

Her hand dropped.

“Adrian.”

He looked like a man whose body had forgotten every rule it knew.

“You’re alive.”

Sofia’s mouth trembled.

“Yes.”

He crossed half the room.

Then stopped.

He seemed unsure whether touching her would make her disappear.

Sofia stared.

“You look the same.”

Adrian gave a broken laugh.

“No, I don’t.”

Charles stepped forward.

“This is exactly why I wanted everyone separated.”

Elena turned.

“Shut up.”

Charles actually obeyed.

Sofia looked at Noah again.

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“Elena, please.”

“No.”

“He’s my son.”

“He was your son.”

The sentence hurt both of them.

Sofia flinched.

Elena hated herself for saying it.

But four years of birthday cakes, fevers, preschool forms, nightmares, doctor appointments, scraped knees, and bedtime stories stood between them.

Sofia had disappeared.

Elena had stayed.

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“Everybody has a choice.”

“Not then.”

“Why?”

Sofia looked toward Charles.

“Because someone tried to kill me.”

The room went silent.

Adrian turned toward his father.

Charles’s jaw tightened.

Sofia continued.

“And if Elena knew I was alive, they would have used her to find me.”

Elena’s anger faltered.

“Who?”

Sofia walked into the office.

“Victor Hale.”

Adrian stared.

“He was working for my father.”

“Yes.”

Charles interrupted.

“Victor worked for many people.”

Sofia laughed bitterly.

“That is one way to say it.”

Adrian turned.

“What did he do?”

Sofia looked at him.

“I found transactions.”

“What transactions?”

“At Bellman Legal.”

Elena remembered.

The late nights.

The warning.

Sofia continued.

“Sterling Financial had been moving client money through shell companies tied to offshore accounts.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“Not the company officially.”

“Then who?”

“Victor.”

Charles closed his eyes.

Sofia looked at him.

“And someone on the board.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“Who?”

“I never found out.”

Charles said quietly, “That is why she was kept hidden.”

Elena spun toward him.

“You expect gratitude?”

“No.”

“You signed a transfer order and let us bury someone else.”

Charles looked tired.

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

“You let me identify a body.”

“The injuries were extensive.”

Elena stared in disbelief.

“You planned it.”

Charles said nothing.

Sofia stepped forward.

“I agreed.”

That hurt more.

Elena turned slowly.

“You what?”

“I agreed.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor had already tried once.”

Sofia touched the scar at her temple.

“The crash wasn’t an accident.”

Elena remembered the wrecked car.

The doctor.

The words massive trauma.

Sofia’s voice shook.

“I woke up two days later.”

“You woke up?”

“Yes.”

“And no one called me?”

“I begged them not to.”

Elena stared.

Sofia cried openly now.

“I thought if you believed I was dead, you and Noah would be safe.”

“You gave him to me without telling me.”

“I was unconscious when he was born.”

“You could have come back.”

“Every month I wanted to.”

“You knew where we lived?”

“Yes.”

“You watched us?”

Sofia looked down.

“Yes.”

Elena stepped backward as if struck.

“How?”

“Charles arranged reports.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You had people watching me?”

“For protection.”

“You watched us struggle?”

Charles said nothing.

Elena laughed once.

“I worked double shifts while you watched.”

Sofia looked horrified.

“I didn’t know about that.”

“You knew enough.”

“Elena—”

“No.”

Noah began to cry.

Elena immediately softened.

“Hey. Hey, baby.”

She knelt.

“Are we going home?”

“Yes.”

Sofia made a small sound.

Elena ignored it.

Noah looked at Sofia.

“Are you my aunt?”

Nobody answered.

His brow furrowed.

“You said I was your baby.”

Elena closed her eyes.

There was no clean way through.

She took his hands.

“Noah, Sofia is someone very important.”

“Who?”

Sofia knelt several feet away.

Elena looked at her.

For all the anger, she saw her sister.

The girl who used to steal her sweaters.

The teenager who cried when their father died.

The woman who had once trusted Elena with everything.

Everything except this.

Elena looked back at Noah.

“She is the lady who gave birth to you.”

Noah frowned.

“My mommy?”

Elena’s heart broke.

“I’m your mommy.”

Sofia lowered her head.

Elena continued.

“And Sofia is your first mommy.”

Noah stared.

Children did not have language for impossible things.

He looked at Sofia.

“Why did you leave?”

Sofia covered her mouth again.

“I was scared.”

“Of the bad man?”

“Yes.”

Noah thought about that.

Then he moved closer to Elena.

Sofia cried harder.

Adrian watched, devastated.

Finally he said, “And me?”

Sofia looked up.

“I tried.”

“I know that now.”

“You didn’t answer.”

“I never got anything.”

Sofia turned toward Charles.

“He intercepted them.”

Charles did not deny it.

Adrian stared at his father.

“Why?”

Charles walked to the window.

“Because Sofia had become a liability.”

Adrian’s voice went cold.

“You kept the woman I loved from me.”

“You were thirty-eight. You were preparing to take over the company. I would not allow your judgment to be compromised.”

“My judgment?”

“She was being investigated.”

“She was being hunted.”

“I didn’t know that then.”

“You knew enough to steal my mail.”

Charles faced him.

“I knew she had confidential documents.”

“So you thought she was blackmailing us.”

“Yes.”

Sofia looked at Charles.

“And when you realized I wasn’t?”

“I tried to help.”

“After the crash.”

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You knew she was pregnant?”

Charles did not answer.

Adrian’s face changed.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you still kept her from me.”

Charles looked at Noah.

“I did what I believed necessary.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“There it is.”

Elena stood.

“We’re leaving.”

Sofia looked panicked.

“Please don’t take him away.”

“He needs quiet.”

“I waited four years.”

“That was your choice.”

“I was trying to protect him.”

“And I was raising him.”

Sofia flinched.

Elena softened only slightly.

“I’m not punishing you.”

“It feels like it.”

“I don’t care what it feels like right now.”

She took Noah’s backpack.

“We are going home.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Security should escort you.”

“No.”

“Victor is somewhere in the city.”

Elena paused.

That was true.

Sofia stood.

“He knows Noah exists now.”

Elena turned.

“How?”

“The file he stole.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“What was in it?”

Sofia looked toward Charles.

“He’ll know.”

Charles opened a desk drawer.

“It contained old surveillance.”

“Of me?” Elena asked.

“Yes.”

“And Noah?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Charles said nothing.

Sofia answered.

“Because Victor suspected Noah was Adrian’s son.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Is he?”

Sofia stared.

Elena held her breath.

Noah played with the zipper on his backpack.

Finally Sofia said, “Yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For four years he had been a father without knowing it.

Noah looked up.

“What?”

Sofia realized.

“Oh.”

Elena knelt.

“Noah, sweetheart, we’re going home.”

“But is he my dad?”

Elena looked at Adrian.

He looked terrified.

Not the Wall Street executive.

Not Charles Sterling’s heir.

Just a man facing a four-year-old boy.

“Yes,” Sofia whispered.

Noah stared at Adrian.

“You’re my dad?”

Adrian crouched slowly.

“If that’s okay with you.”

Noah considered him.

“You were mean to my mommy.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Yes.”

“You have to say sorry.”

Adrian swallowed.

“You’re right.”

He stood.

“Elena, I’m sorry.”

Noah frowned.

“Better.”

Despite everything, Sofia laughed through tears.

Elena almost did too.

Then Daniel rushed into the room.

The expression on his face erased the moment.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“We found Hale’s car.”

“Where?”

“Battery Park.”

“Was he there?”

“No.”

Daniel looked toward Elena.

“There was something inside.”

He handed Adrian a phone.

Not Victor’s.

A cheap prepaid phone.

One message was open.

A photograph.

Elena’s apartment building.

Taken that morning.

Below it:

THE BOY FOR THE FILES.

Elena grabbed the phone.

“What files?”

Sofia went white.

“Elena.”

“What files?”

Sofia stepped closer.

“The key.”

Elena froze.

“The key I mailed you.”

“What does it open?”

“A storage box.”

“Where?”

“Grand Central.”

Elena’s stomach dropped.

“You’re telling me the evidence Victor wants has been sitting in my apartment for four years?”

Sofia nodded.

Adrian called security.

“Get two teams to Elena’s address.”

Elena grabbed his arm.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Noah’s things are there.”

“That’s exactly why you can’t go.”

“He needs his medication.”

“What medication?”

“Allergy inhaler. It’s in the kitchen.”

Adrian turned to Daniel.

“Send someone.”

Daniel was already dialing.

Elena took Noah’s hand.

“We are not staying here.”

Sofia stepped toward her.

“Stay with me.”

Elena looked at her.

“I don’t know you right now.”

The pain on Sofia’s face was immediate.

Elena regretted it.

But before she could speak, Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Say that again.”

Everyone watched him.

He lowered the phone.

“The security team reached Elena’s building.”

“And?” Adrian asked.

Daniel looked at Elena.

“Your apartment door was open.”

Elena’s breath caught.

“They went inside.”

Noah squeezed her hand.

“What did they find?”

Daniel did not answer at first.

“Daniel.”

He looked toward Noah.

May you like

Then back at Elena.

“Someone was waiting in the bedroom.”
