Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Harper stood in the doorway.

Smiling.

Not nervous.

Not surprised.

Not afraid.

That was the first thing Matteo noticed.

Because everyone who entered a room with Matteo Rossi usually reacted the same way.

They became careful.

They measured their words.

They watched his expression before speaking.

But Harper didn't.

She looked at him like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

"Matteo."

Her voice was soft.

Almost affectionate.

Like they were still standing beside the pool in Santorini.

Like nothing had changed.

Matteo stared at her.

"Why are you here?"

Harper looked past him.

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then toward the folder on the table.

Her smile faded slightly.

"You found it."

Daniel stepped forward.

"How much did you tell him?"

Harper ignored him.

She looked back at Matteo.

"Not enough, apparently."

Matteo felt something cold move through him.

Because Harper wasn't acting like someone caught in a lie.

She was acting like someone who had lost control of a plan.

"Start talking."

His voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

Harper sighed.

"You always were impatient."

Matteo stepped closer.

"Where is my wife?"

For the first time, Harper's expression changed.

Not guilt.

Concern.

"You still think this is about me?"

Matteo stopped.

"What does that mean?"

Harper looked at the documents on the table.

"It means Norah was never running away because of the affair."

Silence.

Daniel looked at Matteo.

"She found out the truth."

Matteo turned toward Harper.

"What truth?"

Harper didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she walked into the warehouse.

Slowly.

Confidently.

She picked up the old photograph.

The one showing Norah beside Matteo's father.

"You really don't remember."

Matteo's eyes narrowed.

"Remember what?"

Harper looked at him.

"Your father tried to tell you."

A pause.

"But you were too busy becoming him."

The words hit harder than Matteo expected.

Because they were cruel.

But they were also familiar.

His entire life, people had compared him to his father.

The same cold decisions.

The same control.

The same fear surrounding his name.

But Matteo had always believed he was different.

Harper placed the photograph down.

"Your father wasn't protecting Norah from you."

She looked directly at him.

"He was protecting you from what happened to him."

Matteo didn't move.

"Explain."

Harper looked toward Daniel.

"Tell him."

Daniel remained silent.

Matteo's patience disappeared.

"Daniel."

Daniel finally spoke.

"The night I disappeared..."

He looked down.

"I found evidence that someone inside the family was moving money without your father's permission."

Matteo frowned.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at Harper.

She didn't look away.

"The person your father trusted most."

Matteo's expression changed.

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Harper crossed her arms.

"Your father discovered that someone close to him was building a second empire."

Matteo stared.

"Why would you know that?"

Harper smiled sadly.

"Because I was there."

The room went silent.

Matteo felt his anger rising.

"How?"

Harper looked at him.

"Because my father worked for yours."

That sentence changed everything.

Matteo stepped back.

"You told me your family had nothing to do with mine."

"I lied."

She said it without hesitation.

No excuses.

No apology.

"I was young."

Matteo laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

"You were young?"

He looked at the woman he had taken on his honeymoon.

The woman whose perfume had destroyed the last piece of trust between him and Norah.

"You knew exactly who I was."

Harper nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why?"

Her answer was quiet.

"Because I was supposed to get close to you."

The warehouse became completely still.

Matteo looked at Daniel.

Then back at Harper.

"For what?"

Harper looked away.

"To find something."

"What?"

She didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"Norah."

Matteo froze.

"No."

Daniel's voice was low.

"Your father hid something connected to Norah's family."

Harper continued.

"Something your father believed could destroy everyone if the wrong person found it."

Matteo looked at the folder.

The documents.

The photographs.

The missing pieces of a story he never knew existed.

"Norah found it."

Harper nodded.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Six months ago."

Matteo's face changed.

Six months.

The same time she started becoming quieter.

The same time she stopped arguing.

The same time she stopped asking where he was.

Because she wasn't becoming distant.

She was preparing.

He finally understood.

She wasn't trying to save their marriage.

She was trying to survive the truth.

His phone vibrated.

A message.

From Norah.

Everyone looked at him.

He opened it.

A location.

No explanation.

Only one sentence.

"Come alone."

Matteo looked at Harper.

"You know where she is."

Harper hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Matteo stepped forward.

"Where?"

Harper's expression changed.

"Matteo..."

"Where is my wife?"

She looked at Daniel.

Then at the message.

"She's not waiting for you because she misses you."

The words hurt.

But Matteo needed the truth.

"Then why?"

Harper answered quietly.

"Because she found the last file."

Matteo's heart stopped.

"What file?"

Harper looked toward the warehouse wall.

"The one your father spent years hiding."

Daniel walked toward the table.

He removed another folder from underneath the documents.

Matteo had not seen it before.

The cover was old.

But the name written on it was clear.

"Rossi Family Final Archive."

His hands moved toward it.

But before he touched it, Daniel grabbed his arm.

"Wait."

Matteo looked at him.

"Why?"

Daniel's face was serious.

"Because once you open that file..."

A pause.

"...you can't pretend you don't know anymore."

Matteo pulled his arm away.

"I've been pretending my entire life."

He opened the folder.

Inside was a single photograph.

Not old.

Not damaged.

Recent.

His eyes moved across the image.

And everything inside him stopped.

It showed Norah.

Standing beside a man.

A man Matteo recognized immediately.

Because he had seen that face before.

In his own childhood photographs.

The man everyone told him was dead.

His father.

Alive.

Matteo dropped the photograph slightly.

"No..."

Harper whispered.

"He wasn't killed."

Daniel looked at him.

"He disappeared."

Matteo stared at the picture.

His father.

Norah.

Together.

And behind them was the same warehouse.

A message was written on the back of the photograph.

Five words.

"She knows where he is."

Matteo looked up.

"Where is my father?"

Nobody answered.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice he hadn't heard in decades spoke.

"Matteo..."

His entire body froze.

Because the voice belonged to the one person he had buried his whole life.

"Your wife is with me."

A pause.

"And she finally knows why I left."

The call continued.

"Come alone."

Matteo looked toward the warehouse door.

May you like

Then the voice said the words that made him forget how to breathe.

"Because your father has been alive this entire time..."
