Chapter 5 - The Empire Matteo Could Not Control

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Once.

Then again.

Matteo immediately stepped between the door and the woman standing behind him.

Not because he wanted to protect her.

Because he needed answers.

The woman looked at him with fear in her eyes.

"Matteo, you need to leave."

He didn't move.

"Who is outside?"

She looked toward the door.

"Someone who knows we are here."

The handle stopped.

Silence filled the room.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then Matteo heard something.

A faint sound.

A phone vibrating.

Not his.

The woman's face changed.

She reached into her coat and pulled out an old phone.

The screen showed one message.

"They already know."

Matteo looked at her.

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward the table and grabbed the photograph.

The same photograph of Norah as a child.

"She was never supposed to find this."

Matteo stared.

"Stop talking in riddles."

The woman looked at him.

"Your father spent his entire life trying to keep two families from destroying each other."

She placed the photograph down.

"Norah was the last person he trusted."

Matteo's expression hardened.

"My father is dead."

"Yes."

"Then how did he know my wife?"

The woman's eyes softened.

"Because your father knew her before you did."

A sound came from the hallway.

A footstep.

Someone was approaching.

The woman immediately turned off the lights.

"Don't speak."

Matteo hated taking orders.

But something about her voice made him listen.

The room went dark.

The door opened.

A man entered.

Matteo couldn't see his face.

Only his silhouette.

The man walked slowly toward the table.

Then stopped.

"Matteo Rossi."

The voice was unfamiliar.

But the confidence was familiar.

Someone who wasn't afraid.

Someone who believed they had control.

The man looked around the room.

"You came alone."

Matteo stayed silent.

The man laughed quietly.

"Your wife was right about you."

That sentence immediately changed Matteo's expression.

"What did you say?"

The man stepped closer.

"She said you would come without backup."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"Where is Norah?"

The man ignored the question.

Instead, he placed a small object on the table.

A wedding ring.

Matteo recognized it.

Not his.

Norah's old engagement ring.

The one she stopped wearing after their wedding.

His eyes narrowed.

"Where did you get that?"

The man smiled.

"From the person who knows why she left."

The lights suddenly turned back on.

The man was gone.

Only the ring remained.

And a piece of paper underneath it.

Matteo picked it up.

Three words were written.

"Ask your father."

An hour later, Matteo returned to the old Rossi warehouse.

He brought the folder.

The photograph.

And the ring.

He needed the truth.

Not pieces.

Not hints.

The entire truth.

The warehouse door was already open.

He entered.

This time, he wasn't surprised.

He expected someone to be waiting.

And someone was.

Daniel stood beside the table.

"You found her message."

Matteo looked at him.

"You knew."

Daniel didn't deny it.

"Yes."

"You knew everything."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"I knew enough."

Matteo placed the ring on the table.

"Explain."

Daniel looked at the ring.

Then at Matteo.

"Norah found something in this warehouse that changed everything."

"What?"

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was another document.

Older.

Yellowed.

The paper looked like it had been hidden for decades.

"This."

Matteo took it.

The first line made him stop.

"Rossi Family Protection Agreement."

He frowned.

"What is this?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Not a business agreement."

A pause.

"A family agreement."

Matteo read further.

Names.

Dates.

Signatures.

Then he saw it.

His father's signature.

And beside it...

Norah's father's name.

Matteo looked up.

"They knew each other."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"Because your father wasn't only protecting his empire."

He pointed at the document.

"He was protecting Norah."

Matteo's face changed.

"From who?"

Daniel looked away.

"From people inside your own family."

The words were heavy.

Matteo thought about every conversation he had ignored.

Every warning he dismissed.

Every time Norah looked like she wanted to say something but stopped.

He always assumed she was afraid of his world.

Maybe she was afraid because she knew it better than he did.

His phone vibrated.

A message.

From Norah.

He opened it.

"I know you're with Daniel."

Matteo stared.

She knew.

Another message appeared.

"Please listen before you hate me."

His chest tightened.

Then a video file arrived.

He pressed play.

Norah appeared again.

This time she looked different.

More serious.

More emotional.

"Matteo."

She took a breath.

"I wanted to tell you the truth before I left."

The video shook slightly.

Like she was holding the phone herself.

"I found the documents in the warehouse six months ago."

Matteo looked at Daniel.

Daniel remained silent.

"I discovered that your father and mine worked together."

Norah continued.

"But it wasn't about money."

A pause.

"It was about keeping you alive."

Matteo froze.

The video continued.

"There is something you don't know about the night Daniel disappeared."

Daniel looked down.

His expression changed.

Norah's voice became quieter.

"You were told Daniel betrayed your family."

Matteo stared at the screen.

"But that's not what happened."

The video froze.

A new message appeared.

"Ask Daniel what he saw that night."

Matteo slowly looked at Daniel.

"What happened?"

Daniel didn't answer.

For the first time since Matteo saw him again, Daniel looked afraid.

"Matteo..."

"What happened?"

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Your father didn't disappear because of an enemy."

Silence.

"He disappeared because he found out someone close to you was planning to destroy everything."

Matteo's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward the warehouse entrance.

His face changed.

Because someone was standing there.

Someone they thought had left.

Someone Matteo never expected to see again.

Daniel whispered one name.

"Harper."

Matteo turned.

May you like

And the woman standing in the doorway smiled.

Because she wasn't surprised to see him.
