Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew His Secrets

The study door opened another inch.
Matteo didn't move.
Every instinct inside him told him to react.
To reach for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
To turn around.
To take control.
That was what Matteo Rossi always did.
He controlled rooms.
He controlled conversations.
He controlled fear.
But standing alone in the darkness of his own home, he realized something he hated.
He had no idea who was behind him.
"Who is there?"
His voice was low.
No answer.
Only the sound of footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone who wasn't afraid of him.
The lights suddenly flickered back on.
Matteo turned.
And the person standing in the doorway made his entire body freeze.
"Impossible."
The man looked older.
Different.
But Matteo knew that face.
He knew those eyes.
Because he had spent years believing that person was gone forever.
"Hello, Matteo."
The voice was exactly the same.
Matteo took one step back.
"Daniel?"
The man didn't smile.
He simply looked around the study.
The room where Matteo had hidden his secrets.
The room where he believed nobody could enter.
"That's the first thing you say?"
Daniel asked.
"Not why I'm here?"
Matteo stared at him.
Five years.
Five years since Daniel disappeared.
Five years since everyone believed he had vanished after exposing information connected to Matteo's organization.
Five years since Matteo thought that chapter of his life was closed.
"You were dead."
Daniel tilted his head slightly.
"No."
A pause.
"I was hidden."
The word hit harder than Matteo expected.
"Who helped you?"
Daniel looked toward the photograph on Matteo's desk.
A photograph of Matteo and Norah on their wedding day.
"Your wife."
Silence.
Matteo's expression changed.
"No."
Daniel looked back at him.
"Yes."
The answer was too simple.
Too certain.
Matteo walked closer.
"You're lying."
Daniel didn't react.
"That's what you always do when the truth becomes uncomfortable."
Matteo's jaw tightened.
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
Daniel laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was familiar.
"That's the problem, Matteo."
He pointed toward the empty desk.
"You always thought everyone around you was playing your game."
Daniel stepped forward.
"But Norah stopped playing a long time ago."
Matteo looked away.
The words bothered him because they matched everything he had seen.
The missing money.
The hidden plans.
The photograph.
The message.
The woman who left without screaming.
Without begging.
Without asking him to change.
"Where is she?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his coat.
Matteo instantly became tense.
But Daniel only removed a small envelope.
He placed it on the desk.
"She wanted you to have this."
Matteo stared at it.
"Why didn't she give it to me herself?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Because she knew you would convince her to stay."
That sentence hurt more than Matteo expected.
Because deep down, he knew it was true.
He had always been good with words.
Good at making promises.
Good at making people believe tomorrow would be different.
Daniel continued.
"Norah spent years protecting you."
Matteo frowned.
"Protecting me?"
"Yes."
Daniel looked around the study.
"She knew things about your business that could have destroyed you."
Matteo became still.
"What things?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at the flash drive slot on the desk.
"The same things you thought she couldn't find."
Matteo's eyes narrowed.
"You knew about the accounts."
"I knew about everything."
The room became quiet.
Daniel continued.
"Norah discovered your emergency funds months ago."
Matteo looked down.
"She could have taken everything."
"But she didn't."
Daniel's voice became softer.
"She took only what she needed."
"Why?"
The question escaped Matteo before he could stop it.
Daniel looked at him.
"Because she wasn't trying to destroy you."
A pause.
"She was trying to escape you."
Those words stayed in the room.
Matteo looked at the envelope.
His hand moved toward it.
Then stopped.
For the first time in years, he hesitated.
"What is inside?"
Daniel answered:
"The reason your wife stopped believing you would change."
Matteo opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
A handwritten note.
His eyes moved across the words.
Matteo,
I spent years defending you.
I defended you when people called you dangerous.
I defended you when people told me I was making a mistake.
I defended you because I believed the man I married was still somewhere inside the person everyone feared.
But I finally understood something.
You didn't lose me because of Harper.
You lost me because you believed I would always forgive you.
Matteo stopped reading.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Daniel watched silently.
The note continued.
I don't want revenge.
I don't want your empire.
I don't want to hurt you.
I only want my child to grow up knowing love does not feel like fear.
Matteo lowered the paper.
The word "child" affected him differently now.
Not because he was angry.
Because he suddenly understood.
Norah wasn't leaving to punish him.
She was leaving because she was afraid of becoming someone she didn't recognize.
His phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
A photograph appeared.
Norah.
Sitting in a small apartment.
Different clothes.
No makeup.
One hand resting over her stomach.
She looked peaceful.
More peaceful than she had looked beside him in months.
Under the photo was a message.
"She is safe."
Matteo stared.
Then another message arrived.
"Don't make her run again."
His eyes lifted toward Daniel.
"You knew where she was."
Daniel didn't deny it.
"Yes."
Matteo stepped closer.
"Tell me."
"No."
The answer was immediate.
Matteo's expression hardened.
"You don't get to tell me no."
Daniel looked directly into his eyes.
"That's exactly why she left."
The sentence silenced him.
Because Daniel wasn't afraid.
Not even slightly.
And Matteo realized something else.
Everyone around him had always feared losing his approval.
His employees.
His associates.
People who worked for him.
But Norah had reached the point where losing him was easier than staying.
Daniel walked toward the door.
"Where are you going?"
Matteo asked.
Daniel stopped.
"To make sure she has time."
"Time for what?"
Daniel looked back.
"To decide whether you deserve to know the truth."
Then he left.
Matteo stood alone in the study.
For the first time, his empire felt smaller than this room.
He looked at the note again.
Then at the photograph of Norah.
His wife.
The woman who had spent years standing beside him.
The woman he thought would never leave.
His phone vibrated again.
Another message.
This time, from Norah.
Only four words.
"I found the truth."
Matteo stared at the screen.
Then another line appeared.
"I found what you did before we met."
His breathing slowed.
Because there was only one secret in his past that could make Norah disappear forever.
A secret he had buried five years ago.
A secret connected to Daniel.
The screen showed one final message.
"Come alone if you want to know why I protected you."
Matteo grabbed his jacket.
He walked toward the front door.
But before he reached it, his phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
A name he had not seen in years.
May you like
And then he heard the voice on the other end say the words that made him stop.
"Matteo... you need to know what Norah found in the old Rossi warehouse..."
