Chapter 4 - The Truth Hidden In The Old Warehouse

"Matteo... you need to know what Norah found in the old Rossi warehouse..."

The voice on the phone was one Matteo never expected to hear again.

He stopped beside the front door.

His hand remained on the handle.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Because the person calling him was supposed to be gone.

Not hiding.

Not missing.

Gone.

"Who is this?"

The voice on the other end was quiet.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

"Matteo."

His fingers tightened around the phone.

"That’s impossible."

A slow breath came through the speaker.

"I know."

The word carried years of silence.

Years of secrets.

Years of things Matteo had buried.

"You died."

The person paused.

"No."

A moment later:

"Someone wanted you to believe I did."

Matteo looked toward the dark hallway behind him.

The penthouse suddenly felt smaller.

Every hidden corner felt like it was holding a memory.

"Tell me what Norah found."

The voice became serious.

"Not over the phone."

Matteo's expression hardened.

"You called me."

"Because you needed to know before someone else found out."

"Who?"

Silence.

Then:

"The people who have been watching your family longer than you realize."

The call ended.

Matteo stared at the screen.

No name.

No location.

Nothing.

Only one thing remained.

The old Rossi warehouse.

A place he had not visited in five years.

A place he had told himself was nothing but a forgotten piece of his past.

But Norah had found it.

And whatever was inside had been enough for her to leave.

The warehouse sat on the edge of the city.

Old.

Abandoned.

Forgotten by everyone except the people who knew what it contained.

Matteo arrived forty minutes later.

Alone.

Exactly as Norah's message demanded.

The building looked exactly the same.

Rust on the doors.

Broken windows.

Dust covering everything.

But Matteo knew better.

Places like this were never truly abandoned.

He entered slowly.

The air smelled like old paper and metal.

His footsteps echoed.

Then he saw it.

The storage room.

The one he had locked five years ago.

The lock was broken.

Matteo stopped.

Someone had already been inside.

He pushed the door open.

The room was empty except for one table.

On top of it was a folder.

And a photograph.

Matteo picked up the photograph first.

His face changed.

It was Norah.

But not the Norah he knew.

The photograph was taken years earlier.

Before their wedding.

Before she entered his world.

She was standing outside this exact warehouse.

Beside a man.

Matteo recognized him immediately.

His father.

A man who had died when Matteo was young.

Impossible.

His father had never met Norah.

At least, that was what Matteo believed.

He opened the folder.

The first page made his breathing stop.

"Norah Rossi."

Not Norah's maiden name.

His last name.

A name she had only taken after marriage.

Below it were dates.

Documents.

Records.

Information about her family.

Matteo flipped through the pages faster.

Then he found it.

A letter.

Written by his father.

His hands became still.

He read the first line.

"Matteo, if you are reading this, then someone finally found the truth I spent years hiding."

He continued.

"I made mistakes. Dangerous mistakes. But the biggest mistake was believing I could protect my family by keeping them away from each other."

Matteo frowned.

Family?

What did that mean?

He turned the page.

"The woman you married was never a stranger to this family."

His heart dropped.

A sound came from behind him.

Matteo turned quickly.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

He grabbed the folder.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

From Norah.

He opened it.

A video file.

His finger hovered above the screen.

Then he pressed play.

Norah appeared.

She was sitting somewhere unfamiliar.

Calm.

Not afraid.

Her face looked tired.

But stronger than he had ever seen.

"Matteo."

Hearing his name from her made something inside him shift.

"If you are watching this, it means you found the warehouse."

He stared at the screen.

She continued.

"I wanted to tell you everything myself."

A pause.

"But every time I tried, you reminded me that your world was too dangerous for honesty."

Matteo looked away.

Because he knew she was right.

"I found these files months ago."

Norah's voice remained steady.

"I didn't know what they meant at first."

She looked down.

"Then I discovered my father had known your father."

Matteo froze.

"My father?"

Norah nodded in the video.

"Yes."

The video continued.

"Before I met you, before our wedding, before I became your wife, our families were already connected."

Matteo watched without blinking.

"Your father wasn't only hiding money."

A pause.

"He was hiding a person."

The screen went dark.

The video ended.

Matteo stood frozen.

Then another message appeared.

"Meet me if you want the rest."

A location followed.

He looked at it.

It was not far.

Only twenty minutes away.

Before leaving, Matteo looked once more at the warehouse.

At the folder.

At the photograph of Norah beside his father.

A question kept repeating in his mind.

How long had she known?

How long had she carried this secret?

And why had she protected him?

The location was an old private building outside the city.

Matteo entered alone.

The lights were already on.

Someone was waiting.

A woman.

Her back was turned.

For a second, Matteo thought it was Norah.

Then she turned.

Not Norah.

Someone older.

Someone whose face Matteo had seen in old family photographs.

His expression changed.

"No."

The woman looked at him sadly.

"Yes."

Matteo took a step back.

Because the person standing in front of him was supposed to be impossible.

"Your father asked me to protect her."

Matteo stared.

"Protect who?"

The woman looked toward the hallway.

And then Matteo saw a photograph on the table.

A photograph he had never seen before.

A photograph showing Norah as a child.

Standing beside a man.

A man Matteo knew.

The woman spoke quietly.

"The truth is, Matteo..."

She pushed the photograph toward him.

"Norah wasn't the person who entered your family."

A pause.

"Your family entered hers."

Matteo picked up the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Three words.

Words that made his blood run cold.

"She knows everything."

The lights above them suddenly flickered.

The woman looked toward the locked door.

Her face changed.

Because someone was outside.

May you like

Someone who was not supposed to be there.

The handle slowly began to turn.
