Chapter 6 - The Brother From The Shadows

"Brother."

The word echoed through the hidden room.

Nobody moved.

The man standing in the doorway looked at Vincent Hale like he was looking at someone he had spent his entire life waiting to meet.

He was younger.

Maybe thirty.

Dark hair.

Sharp features.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

The resemblance wasn't obvious in a photograph.

It was obvious standing in front of him.

Because this man didn't look like Vincent.

He looked like a version of Vincent that had lived a completely different life.

Daniel raised his weapon.

"Identify yourself."

The man ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Vincent.

"I know you have questions."

Vincent didn't answer.

For once, he had nothing to say.

The man stepped into the room slowly.

The emergency lights revealed more details.

A scar near his jaw.

A small mark on his hand.

The same three-line pattern on his wrist.

The same scar.

Vincent noticed.

I saw his face change.

"You..."

His voice cracked.

The man stopped.

"My name is Adrian."

A pause.

"Adrian Hale."

Nobody spoke.

Vincent looked like the name itself had broken something inside him.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"I know."

"No."

Vincent shook his head.

"My father had one child."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"That's what he told everyone."

The words hurt because they were exactly what Keller had said.

A lie repeated for eighteen years.

Vincent took a step forward.

"Why?"

Adrian looked around the room.

At the files.

The monitors.

The hidden equipment.

"Because this room exists."

Vincent frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means our father knew someone would eventually come looking."

"Our father?"

Adrian nodded.

"He knew one of us would have to find the truth."

Vincent stared at him.

"Where have you been?"

Adrian looked away.

"Hidden."

"By who?"

Adrian looked back.

"By our mother."

The room became silent.

Vincent's expression hardened.

"My mother died."

Adrian didn't react.

"That's what you were told."

"Everyone saw it."

"No."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Everyone saw a funeral."

He paused.

"Nobody saw a body."

The words hit harder than any accusation.

I watched Vincent absorb them.

Because he knew.

Somewhere inside him, he knew.

His entire life had been built around things people told him.

Not things he had seen.

Daniel lowered his weapon slightly.

"Where is Richard Hale?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Our father?"

"Yes."

Adrian hesitated.

"Alive."

The answer should have been impossible.

But tonight, impossible had become normal.

Vincent looked at the monitor.

The image of his father.

The message.

The hidden room.

Everything connected.

"He left me."

Adrian's face softened.

"No."

Vincent looked at him.

"He disappeared."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"He protected you."

Vincent laughed quietly.

"By letting me believe he was dead?"

"By making sure you hated him."

That stopped Vincent.

"What?"

Adrian looked at the floor.

"If you loved him, you would have searched for him."

A pause.

"If you searched for him, they would have found you."

Nobody spoke.

I felt a strange sadness in Adrian's voice.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Pain.

"You were the public son."

Adrian looked at Vincent.

"The one everyone watched."

"And you?"

"I was the son nobody knew existed."

Vincent stared.

"Why?"

Adrian walked toward the desk.

He picked up the old folder.

"Because our father discovered something."

"What?"

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Names.

Evidence.

"He discovered that someone inside his own organization was selling information."

Daniel looked closer.

"To who?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Everyone."

That answer made the room colder.

"Government officials."

"Corporations."

"Criminal groups."

"Anyone willing to pay."

Vincent looked at the files.

"And my mother?"

Adrian became quiet.

"She found out who it was."

"Who?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Vincent stepped closer.

"Who killed my mother?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Nobody killed her."

Vincent froze.

"What?"

"She disappeared."

"Why?"

"Because she found the person responsible."

A silence.

Then Vincent asked the question everyone was thinking.

"Who?"

Adrian looked toward the camera in the corner.

Then toward the ceiling.

Like he was afraid someone was listening.

"Someone who is still inside your life."

Daniel immediately reacted.

"Name."

Adrian shook his head.

"Not here."

Vincent became angry.

"Not here?"

He pointed around the room.

"You brought me into a hidden room beneath a restaurant. You showed me my dead father alive. You told me I have a brother I never knew existed."

His voice rose.

"And now you're afraid to say one name?"

Adrian didn't flinch.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because that person already knows you're here."

The lights flickered.

Everyone stopped.

Adrian looked at Vincent.

"That's why we need to leave."

Daniel checked his phone.

"No signal."

Adrian nodded.

"They blocked everything."

"How do you know?"

"Because I was the one who built this room."

Everyone looked at him.

Vincent narrowed his eyes.

"You built this?"

Adrian nodded.

"Our father taught me."

The answer raised more questions.

Vincent walked closer.

"My father trained you."

"Yes."

"But not me."

Adrian looked at him.

"No."

"Why?"

Adrian looked away.

"Because you were meant to have a normal life."

Vincent laughed.

"Normal?"

He pointed toward the room.

"I run a billion-dollar company."

"You still had a choice."

Adrian's voice softened.

"I never did."

That sentence stayed with me.

Because Vincent had everything.

Money.

Power.

Influence.

But Adrian had something Vincent never had.

The truth.

And somehow, that seemed heavier.

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A slow footsteps.

Someone was approaching.

Daniel moved in front of Vincent.

Adrian immediately became alert.

"That's not good."

"What?"

Adrian looked toward the door.

"Nobody should know this room exists."

The footsteps stopped.

Right outside.

Then a voice spoke.

"Vincent."

Everyone froze.

Because the voice was familiar.

Not Richard.

Not Adrian.

Someone else.

Someone from the restaurant.

Vincent looked at Keller.

The chef looked terrified.

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Daniel raised his weapon.

The lock clicked.

Once.

Twice.

Then the door opened.

A figure stepped inside.

May you like

And Vincent whispered the name before anyone else could speak.

"Mom?"
