Chapter 5 - The Brother Nobody Knew

"Vincent, before you ask who that child is..."
Richard Hale looked directly into the camera.
"Ask why your mother spent eighteen years hiding him from you."
The screen went black.
Again.
Nobody spoke.
The timing was deliberate.
Someone wanted Vincent to hear the truth one piece at a time.
Not enough to understand.
Just enough to keep him searching.
Vincent stood frozen, staring at the empty monitor.
The photograph was still in his hand.
The little boy between his parents.
The silver pendant around his neck.
The same pendant Vincent had worn every day since childhood.
I watched him turn the picture over.
There was something written on the back.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
"What does it say?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
For several seconds, Vincent Hale—the man who controlled billion-dollar companies and made powerful people nervous—looked completely lost.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Sir."
Vincent finally handed him the photo.
Daniel read it.
His expression changed.
"Subject Two."
The words felt wrong.
Like they belonged in a laboratory.
Not on a family photograph.
Keller lowered himself into a chair.
"I told you."
Vincent looked at him.
"You told me nothing."
"I tried."
"No."
Vincent walked toward him.
"You protected them."
Keller looked up.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised everyone.
Vincent stopped.
"You admit it?"
Keller nodded.
"I protected your father."
"Why?"
"Because I believed he was protecting you."
Vincent laughed quietly.
A bitter laugh.
"By pretending to die?"
Keller looked away.
"You don't know what happened."
"Then tell me."
"I can't."
The answer made Vincent's expression harden.
"Can't?"
Keller shook his head.
"Not because I don't want to."
He looked toward the cameras.
"Because if they know I told you, I won't leave this room alive."
Nobody moved.
The threat was invisible.
But everyone felt it.
Daniel immediately checked the corners of the room.
"Who are they?"
Keller didn't answer.
Daniel grabbed the back of his chair.
"Who?"
Keller looked at Vincent.
"The people your father was running from."
Vincent stared.
"My father was running?"
"Yes."
"My father was one of the most powerful men in Chicago."
"And that's exactly why he was dangerous."
The words landed heavily.
I looked at Vincent.
He wasn't angry anymore.
He was listening.
Because somewhere deep inside, he knew.
The story he had been given his entire life was incomplete.
Maybe completely false.
"What was the Hale Initiative?" Vincent asked.
Keller remained silent.
Vincent stepped closer.
"Answer me."
Keller looked at the folder.
"The Hale Initiative wasn't a business project."
"Then what was it?"
"A protection system."
"For what?"
Keller hesitated.
"For people."
Daniel frowned.
"That's vague."
"Because it was supposed to be."
Keller looked at the old equipment around the room.
"Your father believed powerful people had become too connected. Politicians. Corporations. Criminal organizations."
Vincent said nothing.
"He believed secrets were becoming more valuable than money."
Keller continued.
"So he created a private intelligence network."
I felt a chill.
"A network?"
Keller nodded.
"Information. Surveillance. Security."
Daniel looked at Vincent.
"Your father built an intelligence operation."
Vincent ignored him.
"And my mother?"
Keller's face changed.
"She discovered what he was really doing."
"What does that mean?"
"It means your father didn't create the network to control people."
Keller looked toward the dark monitor.
"He created it to expose them."
A silence followed.
Then Vincent asked:
"Why fake his death?"
Keller took a deep breath.
"Because someone inside the network betrayed him."
The room went still.
"Someone close."
Vincent looked at the photograph.
"Who?"
Keller didn't answer.
Vincent's voice became colder.
"Who betrayed my father?"
Keller looked at him.
"Your father never told me the name."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
Keller looked down.
"But I know what he feared."
"What?"
Keller whispered:
"His own family."
The words hit harder than anything else.
Vincent stepped back.
"My family?"
Keller nodded.
"Someone with the Hale name helped destroy everything your father built."
Vincent looked at the photo again.
The child.
The pendant.
The secret.
"Who is the boy?"
Keller closed his eyes.
"I don't know."
"You're lying again."
"I'm not."
"Then why did my father say my mother hid him from me?"
Keller looked confused.
"I never heard that."
Vincent held up the photo.
"Then explain this."
Nobody had an answer.
The room stayed silent.
Until Mara noticed something.
The photograph.
The boy's hand.
There was a small mark on his wrist.
A scar.
Three small lines.
I had seen that before.
Not on the boy.
On Vincent.
"Vincent."
He looked at me.
"Your wrist."
He frowned.
"What?"
"The scar."
His expression changed.
Slowly, he looked down.
A small scar ran across the inside of his wrist.
Three thin lines.
The exact same pattern.
The room became silent.
Daniel noticed.
"Sir..."
Vincent stared at his own wrist.
Then at the photograph.
For the first time, I saw genuine fear on his face.
Not fear of death.
Fear of a memory.
"I don't remember getting this."
Keller looked at him.
"Because you were too young."
Vincent looked up.
"You know?"
Keller didn't respond.
"You know where this came from."
Keller's silence was enough.
Vincent grabbed him by the collar.
"Tell me."
Daniel moved forward.
But stopped when Vincent raised his hand.
No one interfered.
"Tell me what happened."
Keller looked at Vincent.
And for the first time, he looked sorry.
"When you were five years old, there was an accident."
"What accident?"
"Your father told everyone you were injured."
Vincent's grip tightened.
"And?"
Keller swallowed.
"He told everyone you were his only son."
The room went silent.
Vincent released him slowly.
"Only son?"
Keller looked at the photograph.
"The boy in that picture..."
He stopped.
Vincent waited.
"The boy wasn't a stranger."
A sound came from the monitor.
Everyone turned.
The screen turned on by itself.
No video.
No message.
Just a live camera feed.
The hidden room.
But from another angle.
We were watching ourselves.
Then another window appeared.
A file.
A medical record.
The name at the top made Vincent stop breathing.
"Vincent Hale."
Below it:
"Patient One."
Then another file opened.
"Unknown Male Child."
"Patient Two."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What is this?"
Vincent didn't answer.
Because another line appeared.
Patient Two status:
"ALIVE."
The room went silent.
Then a final message appeared.
"Bring them both home."
Vincent stared at the screen.
"Both?"
I whispered.
The monitor flickered.
A door somewhere inside the hidden room unlocked.
Everyone heard it.
Slowly.
A heavy metal door opening.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Vincent looked toward the sound.
The door opened a few inches.
A shadow appeared.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"Vincent..."
The voice was young.
Not old.
Not Richard Hale.
A voice that sounded almost exactly like his.
The shadow stepped forward.
May you like
And the person standing in the doorway said:
"Brother."
