Chapter 6 - The Name Hidden Inside The Folder

The door opened.

And the person standing outside made everyone in the room stop breathing.

It was a woman.

She looked around fifty years old.

Dark hair.

Tired eyes.

A face that carried years of regret.

For a moment, I thought I had seen enough impossible things for one day.

My mother being alive.

My husband hiding the truth.

My aunt leaving behind secrets.

But then this woman looked directly at me and whispered:

"Jessica."

I felt a strange feeling in my chest.

Not recognition.

Not exactly.

More like a memory trying to return.

"Who are you?"

The woman stepped inside slowly.

Rachel immediately moved between us.

"Stop there."

The woman stopped.

"I am not here to hurt her."

Nobody moved.

Nobody trusted anyone anymore.

Not after everything we had discovered.

My mother stood up.

Her face changed the moment she saw the woman.

"You came."

The woman looked at her.

"I had to."

That answer made my stomach tighten.

"You know each other?"

My mother looked at me.

Then lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

Of course.

Another secret.

Another person connected to my life.

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I had reached the point where nothing surprised me anymore.

"How many people have been keeping things from me?"

Nobody answered.

The woman looked at me.

"My name is Evelyn Carter."

I waited.

She continued.

"I worked for your aunt Margaret for seventeen years."

My expression changed.

"Worked for her?"

She nodded.

"I was her assistant."

Rachel looked surprised.

"Margaret never mentioned an assistant named Evelyn."

Evelyn gave a sad smile.

"That was intentional."

I looked at Rachel.

"What does that mean?"

Evelyn reached into her bag.

She removed an old key.

A small brass key.

She placed it on the table.

"Margaret asked me to keep this safe until the day Jessica discovered the truth."

My eyes moved to the key.

"What does it open?"

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

"Her private office."

Nobody spoke.

The office from the photograph.

The office where the folder with my name was located.

The office everyone had hidden from me.

I looked at Luca.

His expression told me everything.

He knew.

"You knew about the office."

He did not answer.

"Luca."

His shoulders dropped.

"Yes."

The word hurt.

Even though I expected it.

"You knew."

"I knew there was an office."

"And you never told me?"

He looked at me.

"I was trying to protect you."

I almost smiled.

Everyone used those words.

Protect you.

Protect you.

Protect you.

But nobody ever asked what I wanted protection from.

"You all keep saying that."

My voice became quieter.

"But nobody tells me the truth."

Evelyn looked at me.

"Your aunt believed the truth would put you in danger if the wrong people knew you had it."

I turned toward her.

"Who are the wrong people?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then my mother spoke.

"The people who wanted Margaret's fortune."

I shook my head.

"That is not enough."

I looked at Luca.

"Because apparently you knew about the fortune."

He immediately reacted.

"No."

"But you knew about the house."

"No."

"You knew about my mother."

He became silent.

That silence was becoming his answer.

I looked away.

The pain was not just from betrayal.

It was from realizing how long everyone had been having conversations about my life without me.

Rachel picked up the key.

"We need to see what Margaret left behind."

Evelyn nodded.

"She knew this day would come."

The sentence bothered me.

"What do you mean?"

Evelyn looked at me.

"Your aunt was not surprised by Luca."

Everyone became quiet.

My heart sank.

"What does that mean?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Margaret watched him."

Luca immediately stood.

"That's enough."

Rachel turned.

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"It is not enough."

She looked at him.

"Not anymore."

Luca ran his hand through his hair.

"I made mistakes."

My eyes went to him.

"Mistakes?"

He looked at me.

"Yes."

I waited.

He continued.

"When I met you, I did not know who you were."

I believed that part.

For a moment.

Then he added:

"Not at first."

The words made me freeze.

"Not at first?"

He looked down.

"I found out later."

My stomach dropped.

"When?"

"Months after we started dating."

The room became silent.

Months.

He had learned.

And stayed.

"How?"

He hesitated.

"Your aunt."

I stared at him.

"She told you?"

"No."

He looked ashamed.

"I found documents."

The pain in my chest grew.

"What documents?"

He did not answer.

Rachel stepped closer.

"What documents, Mr. Bennett?"

Luca looked at the floor.

"Documents showing Margaret's assets."

My hands became cold.

"And then?"

He looked at me.

"Then I fell in love with you."

I wanted to believe that.

But there was a problem.

The timing.

The secrets.

The lies.

I did not know what was real anymore.

Evelyn quietly spoke.

"Jessica."

I looked at her.

"Your aunt found something else."

"What?"

She reached into her bag again.

This time she removed a small recorder.

Old.

Scratched.

But carefully preserved.

"Margaret recorded a message."

My heart raced.

"For me?"

Evelyn nodded.

"She wanted you to hear it only after everything started falling apart."

I looked at the recorder.

"Why?"

Evelyn pressed the button.

A few seconds of static filled the room.

Then my aunt's voice appeared.

Older.

Weaker.

But unmistakably Margaret.

"Jessica, if you are listening to this, then you have discovered what I feared."

I stopped breathing.

Her voice continued.

"I need you to understand something. The person who betrayed you is not the only person who lied to you."

Everyone looked at each other.

The recording continued.

"There is someone closer."

My hands tightened.

"Someone who has been protecting the secret for years."

Static.

Then Margaret said:

"And Jessica, before you trust anyone again, you need to know the truth about the night your mother disappeared."

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my mother.

Her face had gone pale.

"You know what happened that night."

She closed her eyes.

"Yes."

My voice cracked.

"Tell me."

She opened her eyes.

And for the first time since she returned, I saw fear.

Real fear.

"I was not running away from you."

"Then why did you leave?"

She looked toward Luca.

And whispered:

"Because someone wanted me gone."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Then Luca's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

Rachel stepped closer.

"Mr. Bennett."

Slowly, he turned the phone around.

The name on the screen was visible.

A name I recognized.

A name that should have meant nothing.

But somehow made everyone in the room afraid.

Because it belonged to the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

My mother whispered:

"No..."

I looked at the screen.

And then the call connected by itself.

A man's voice came through.

Calm.

Familiar.

May you like

And the first words he said were:

"Jessica, you finally opened Margaret's office."
