Chapter 2 - The Letter My Aunt Hid From Me

The envelope shook slightly in my hand.

Not because I was afraid.

Because somewhere deep inside, I already knew that whatever was written inside would change the way I saw my marriage forever.

Rachel Vance stood quietly beside me.

Luca did not move.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The man who had spent the last twenty minutes acting like he controlled everything suddenly looked like someone waiting for a verdict.

Chloe noticed it too.

Her confidence disappeared.

"What is that?" she asked.

I looked at her.

"Something my aunt wanted me to read."

She laughed nervously.

"Your aunt? Jessica, this is getting ridiculous."

But Rachel interrupted.

"Ms. Chloe, I suggest you be careful with your words."

Her voice was calm.

Professional.

The kind of calm that made people stop arguing.

"This document concerns private family matters and legal arrangements."

Chloe looked away.

For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.

I turned the envelope over.

My aunt Margaret's handwriting was unmistakable.

I had seen it on birthday cards.

On old recipes.

On notes she left inside books when I was younger.

Her handwriting always looked gentle.

Warm.

But those words on the envelope felt different.

Open only after you discover what he has been hiding.

I looked at Luca.

"What did she mean?"

He swallowed.

"I don't know."

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

I studied his face.

I had known Luca for eleven years.

I knew when he was lying.

I knew when he avoided a question.

And right now, he was avoiding everything.

Rachel stepped closer.

"Jessica, before you open it, there is something you should understand."

I looked at her.

"What?"

"Your aunt did not create this trust because she wanted to surprise you."

The wind moved through the trees behind us.

Even Chloe became quiet.

Rachel continued.

"Margaret Sterling spent the final months of her life reviewing certain documents connected to your family."

My stomach tightened.

"Connected to my family?"

Rachel nodded.

"Yes."

I looked at Luca.

He looked away.

That small movement told me more than his words ever could.

"What documents?"

Rachel glanced at the children.

Then back at me.

"Not here."

I understood immediately.

Fiona and Leo were still standing beside me.

They had already seen enough.

I kneeled down beside them.

"Sweetheart, can you and your brother wait inside with Rachel's assistant for a few minutes?"

Fiona looked worried.

"But Mommy..."

I held her hand.

"I promise I am not going anywhere."

She looked at Luca.

Then back at me.

She was only eight years old.

But she understood something was wrong.

Leo hugged my waist.

"Are we still a family?"

That question hurt more than anything Luca had said.

I looked at my son.

"Yes."

I answered immediately.

"We are still a family."

Luca looked uncomfortable.

Almost annoyed.

As if even that moment was inconvenient.

Rachel's assistant gently guided the children toward the house.

When the front door closed behind them, I finally opened the envelope.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

And one photograph.

I unfolded the letter first.

Jessica,

If you are reading this, then you have finally discovered something I hoped you would never have to discover this way.

I stopped.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

I continued reading.

Your husband believes he understands everything about your life. He believes he understands what belongs to him and what does not.

But he has been wrong about something very important.

I looked at Luca.

His face was pale.

"What did she know?"

He said nothing.

I looked back at the letter.

For years, I watched you give more than you received. I watched you sacrifice your dreams to support someone else's.

Someone who slowly began believing your kindness was weakness.

My breathing changed.

Because those words felt painfully accurate.

I remembered all the times Luca told people he built his company alone.

I remembered the nights I edited medical transcripts until three in the morning while he attended networking events.

I remembered selling my mother's bracelet.

The bracelet Chloe was wearing an hour earlier.

I kept reading.

Jessica, there are three things you must know.

First, the house was never Luca's.

Second, the money and assets I left you are protected from anyone who tries to claim them.

Third, there is evidence showing your husband has not been honest with you.

My heart stopped for a moment.

Evidence.

I lowered the letter.

"Luca."

He finally looked at me.

"What?"

"What evidence?"

His jaw tightened.

"I don't know."

Rachel watched him carefully.

"Mr. Bennett, your response is interesting."

He looked at her.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means Margaret's investigation may have discovered something you were hoping would remain hidden."

Luca stepped forward.

"You are making accusations."

"No."

Rachel remained calm.

"I am reading the situation."

I looked at the photograph.

I had avoided looking at it.

Now I turned it over.

It was old.

A picture of Luca.

Standing outside an office building.

I recognized the building.

It was his first company office.

The one I helped him open.

But there was something strange.

A woman was standing beside him.

Her face was partially hidden.

On the back of the photograph, Margaret had written:

"The first lie."

My hands went cold.

"What does this mean?"

Luca immediately stepped toward me.

"Give me that."

I pulled it away.

"No."

His expression changed.

"Jessica."

"No."

For the first time that day, my voice became stronger.

"You don't get to take things from me anymore."

The sentence surprised even me.

Because it was true.

For years, I had allowed him to make decisions.

I had trusted him.

I had believed marriage meant standing beside someone no matter what.

But standing there with my suitcases outside my own house, I realized something.

I had spent years protecting a man who was preparing to replace me.

Luca lowered his voice.

"You are misunderstanding everything."

"Then explain."

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because explanations only work when there is nothing to hide.

Chloe suddenly stepped forward.

"Luca, maybe we should leave."

I turned toward her.

"You wanted this house."

She looked uncomfortable.

"I didn't know about this."

I almost smiled.

"You didn't know a lot of things."

She looked at Luca.

"What is she talking about?"

Luca ignored her.

"Jessica, this is between us."

"No."

I held up the letter.

"This became bigger the moment you packed my children's things and put another woman in my house."

His face hardened.

"You think you have won?"

The question surprised me.

Won?

This was not a game.

This was my family.

My children.

My life.

But Luca continued.

"You have no idea what you are dealing with."

Rachel immediately looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

He realized what he had said.

Too late.

The silence became heavy.

I stared at him.

"What am I dealing with, Luca?"

He looked toward the house.

Then toward Chloe.

Then back at me.

"I can't explain this here."

Rachel stepped closer.

"Then perhaps you should explain it somewhere more appropriate."

She handed me another document.

"This is temporary legal protection regarding occupancy."

I looked at the paper.

Then at Luca.

His confidence was gone.

But something else had replaced it.

Fear.

Not fear of losing the house.

Something deeper.

Something connected to that photograph.

Something connected to Margaret.

I walked toward the front door.

I wanted to see the house differently.

The house where I raised my children.

The house where Luca claimed he was the owner.

The house my aunt had secretly protected for me.

But before I reached the door, my phone vibrated.

One message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

My hands froze.

Because the sender was someone who had been dead for three years.

The message said:

"Jessica, if you are reading this, Luca has already found out that I left you the truth."

And then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A photograph taken inside my house.

Minutes ago.

May you like

Someone was standing in my bedroom.

Someone who should not have been there.
