Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind Luca’s First Lie

The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Luca.
Not even my mother.
Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.
Someone had been inside my house.
Someone had been listening.
Someone had been waiting.
The hallway light flickered as the door moved wider.
Then a figure appeared.
A man.
Older.
Gray hair.
A dark coat.
For a second, I did not recognize him.
Then Luca whispered his name.
"Richard."
My heart tightened.
Because I knew that name.
Everyone in Luca's company knew that name.
Richard Hale.
His first investor.
His mentor.
The man who had supposedly helped Luca build his consulting company from nothing.
The man who had given Luca his first major opportunity.
The man who had stood beside us at our wedding.
The man who had held Fiona when she was born.
The man who had told me:
"Jessica, Luca is lucky to have someone who believes in him."
Now he was standing inside my house without permission.
Without explanation.
And without surprise.
Rachel immediately stood.
"How did you get inside?"
Richard did not answer.
He looked at my mother.
Then at me.
Then at the letter in my hand.
"I was hoping Margaret never made you open that."
My blood ran cold.
"You knew about the letter?"
Richard sighed.
"I knew Margaret left it."
Luca looked at him.
"You said you didn't know what she had."
Richard turned toward him.
"And you believed me?"
The room became silent.
I looked between them.
Because suddenly something became clear.
They were not strangers.
They were not two people caught in the same secret.
They were connected.
"Someone explain."
My voice was calm.
But inside, everything was breaking apart.
Richard looked at me.
"I owe you the truth."
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying that.
The truth.
As if the truth was something they could store away until they decided I was ready.
As if my entire life was a locked room and everyone else had the key.
"I have heard that sentence all day."
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
I stepped closer.
"You don't know what it feels like to discover your husband knew your mother was alive."
Richard looked at Luca.
Then back at me.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"But I know what it feels like to live with a mistake for twenty years."
My mother closed her eyes.
Like she had heard those words before.
I noticed.
And that scared me.
"Mom."
She looked at me.
"What mistake?"
She hesitated.
Then answered.
"The night I disappeared."
I froze.
"What happened that night?"
Nobody spoke.
Rachel slowly closed her portfolio.
She knew this was bigger than a legal issue now.
This was family.
A family built on secrets.
My mother took a deep breath.
"Twenty years ago, I discovered that someone was trying to take control of Margaret's assets."
I frowned.
"Who?"
Her eyes moved toward Luca.
I felt my stomach drop.
"No."
Luca immediately stepped forward.
"Jessica, listen."
I raised my hand.
"Don't."
He stopped.
For the first time, I did not want his explanation.
Because I was afraid I already knew.
My mother continued.
"I discovered that someone was using relationships to get closer to the Sterling family."
I looked at Luca.
"You mean me?"
He looked hurt.
But he did not deny it.
That hurt more.
Richard spoke.
"Luca was young."
I turned toward him.
"That is your defense?"
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"It is the reason things started."
"Started?"
He nodded.
"Luca did not begin with the intention of destroying anyone."
Luca looked away.
"But things changed."
I stared at my husband.
"What things?"
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel placed a document on the table.
"I believe this may explain the beginning."
I picked it up.
It was a company registration document.
Luca's first business.
The same company I helped him build.
The same company he always said was created through his own hard work.
But there was something I had never seen.
A signature.
My mother's signature.
I looked up.
"Why is my mother signing his company documents?"
Luca's face went pale.
"I can explain."
"No."
I held the paper.
"You can answer."
Silence.
Then he said:
"Because she helped me."
The words shocked me.
"Helped you?"
He nodded slowly.
"Before we met."
I stared at him.
"How?"
He looked uncomfortable.
"She invested."
The room became quiet.
My mother had invested in Luca's company.
Before I knew him.
Before our marriage.
Before anyone told me anything.
"Why?"
My mother looked at me.
"Because I thought I could protect you."
I shook my head.
"Protect me from what?"
She looked at Luca.
And this time, there was pain in her eyes.
"From becoming part of something dangerous."
Luca immediately reacted.
"That's not fair."
My mother looked at him.
"You promised me."
He became silent.
"What promise?"
I looked at Luca.
He did not answer.
My voice became softer.
"What promise did you make to my mother?"
He looked down.
That was when I knew.
Whatever happened between them was real.
And he had hidden it from me for years.
Rachel walked toward the window.
"I think we need to separate facts from emotions."
She pointed toward the documents.
"Margaret created the trust because she believed someone might eventually attempt to access Jessica's inheritance through marriage."
I looked at her.
"Through marriage?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
The words felt like a knife.
Because suddenly every memory had a different meaning.
Every expensive dinner.
Every conversation about money.
Every time Luca asked about my aunt.
Every question about my family.
I remembered.
And I hated that I was remembering.
"Did you marry me for money?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
Luca looked at me.
"No."
But his answer was too fast.
Too desperate.
"I loved you."
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to.
Because if he was lying about everything, then eleven years of my life became something I could not recognize.
But then my phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
I looked down.
A new photo.
This time, it was not from my bedroom.
It was from inside Margaret's old office.
The office I had never seen.
The office nobody told me existed.
The picture showed a desk.
On the desk was a folder.
The title was visible.
"Jessica Sterling Investigation."
My hands started shaking.
Then another message appeared.
"Your mother protected you from Luca."
A second message arrived immediately.
"But she never told you who Luca was protecting you from."
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Everyone except Luca.
Because Luca was staring at the photograph.
Like he recognized something.
Like he knew exactly what was inside that folder.
I turned my phone toward him.
"Luca."
He did not answer.
"Luca, who is in that folder?"
His face lost all color.
Then he whispered:
"Jessica..."
"What?"
He looked at the front door.
Not at me.
Not at Rachel.
Not at my mother.
At the door.
And then someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Because the person outside did not knock like a stranger.
They knocked like someone who knew this house.
Someone who had been here before.
Rachel whispered:
"Who else knows about this?"
Nobody answered.
May you like
Then the door opened.
And the person standing outside said my name.
