Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Returned From The Past

I could not move.

Not because I was afraid of the woman standing inside my house.

Because I was trying to convince myself that my eyes were lying.

The woman standing in the hallway looked older.

Different.

But I knew her.

I knew the way she held her hands.

I knew the way she tilted her head when she was nervous.

I knew the small scar above her eyebrow.

A scar I remembered from childhood.

A scar I had touched when I was eight years old and asked if it hurt.

The woman in front of me was my mother.

The woman everyone told me had died.

The woman whose funeral I attended twenty years ago.

The woman whose old photographs I kept inside a box because they were the only memories I had left.

"Mom?"

The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

The woman started crying.

Not dramatic crying.

Not the kind people fake when they want forgiveness.

Real tears.

The kind that come from years of pain.

"Jessica..."

Her voice broke.

"I never wanted you to find out this way."

Nobody spoke.

Not Luca.

Not Chloe.

Not Rachel.

Even the children were silent.

Because everyone understood something impossible had just happened.

A woman who was supposed to be gone had walked back into my life.

I took a step backward.

My mind was trying to catch up.

"No."

I whispered.

"No, this isn't possible."

My mother looked at me.

"I know what they told you."

I shook my head.

"They told me you died."

She lowered her eyes.

"I know."

My heart started beating faster.

"Who are you?"

The question sounded strange.

Because I knew exactly who she was.

But I needed to hear the answer.

"I am your mother."

The hallway felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

I looked at Luca.

He was pale.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Pale.

Like he had known this moment could happen.

And that realization hurt more than anything.

"You knew."

My voice was quiet.

Luca immediately looked at me.

"Jessica..."

"You knew."

He swallowed.

"I knew something."

Rachel turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

Luca did not answer.

I walked closer.

"How long?"

He stayed silent.

"How long have you known my mother was alive?"

His silence was the answer.

My hands started shaking.

The betrayal felt different now.

Before, I thought Luca had betrayed my marriage.

Now I realized he had been hiding pieces of my entire life.

"Answer me."

He finally spoke.

"Four years."

Everything stopped.

Four years.

Four years while I believed I had no mother.

Four years while I celebrated holidays with an empty chair at the table.

Four years while I looked at old photographs and wondered what my life would have been like if she was still here.

"You knew for four years?"

My voice cracked.

"I didn't know where she was at first."

"At first?"

Luca looked away.

That phrase confirmed everything.

He knew more than he admitted.

My mother stepped forward.

"Jessica, please."

I turned toward her.

"No."

The word came out sharper than I intended.

But I could not stop.

"You don't get to walk back into my life and ask me to understand."

She nodded slowly.

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

Tears rolled down her face.

"I did."

"Why?"

She looked at Luca.

That small movement changed everything.

Because it meant the answer involved him.

And maybe more people.

Rachel noticed it too.

"Everyone needs to sit down."

Nobody argued.

For the first time all day, Luca looked like someone who did not know what to do.

We moved into the living room.

The same room where I had celebrated birthdays.

The same room where Luca once told me we would grow old together.

Now my mother sat on my couch.

Alive.

A secret.

Rachel sat across from us.

She opened her portfolio.

"I need everyone to understand something."

She looked at my mother.

"Your return changes the situation."

My mother nodded.

"I know."

Rachel looked at me.

"Your aunt Margaret knew."

I froze.

"What?"

"Margaret knew your mother was alive."

The room became silent again.

I stared at her.

"My aunt knew?"

Rachel nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

Rachel looked down.

"Because your mother asked her not to."

I felt something break inside me.

Another secret.

Another person deciding what I was allowed to know.

My entire life suddenly felt like a story everyone else had read except me.

I stood up.

"I need answers."

My mother looked at me.

"You deserve them."

"Then start."

She took a deep breath.

"Twenty years ago, I discovered something about Luca's family."

I looked at him.

"My family?"

My mother nodded.

"Before you married him, before you even met him, there were things happening behind the scenes."

Luca stood.

"This is not fair."

Rachel immediately looked at him.

"Sit down."

The authority in her voice stopped him.

My mother continued.

"Your aunt Margaret discovered that certain people were trying to control the Sterling family assets."

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with Luca?"

My mother looked at him.

"Everything."

Luca's expression changed.

"Don't do this."

My mother stared at him.

"You already did."

The tension between them was something I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something older.

Something that had been waiting years.

I looked between them.

"Someone explain."

Rachel placed a document on the table.

"This was found in Margaret's private files."

I picked it up.

The title immediately caught my attention.

Financial Investigation Report.

My name was written at the bottom.

But the date was from before I married Luca.

I looked at Rachel.

"Why was my name on this?"

She hesitated.

"Because Margaret believed Luca approached you for a reason."

The room went silent.

I looked at my husband.

"No."

The word came automatically.

Because even after everything, part of me still wanted to defend him.

Eleven years of marriage does not disappear in one afternoon.

Luca stepped closer.

"Jessica, listen to me."

I looked at him.

"Did you marry me because of my family?"

His face changed.

A small change.

But enough.

Enough for me to see fear.

"I loved you."

That was not an answer.

"Did you know about my aunt's money?"

"No."

"Did you know about this house?"

"No."

"Did you know my mother was alive?"

Silence.

Again.

Always silence.

I turned away.

My mother reached into her bag.

"I brought something for you."

She removed an old envelope.

It was worn.

Yellowed.

Like it had been carried for years.

"My last letter to you."

I stared at it.

"Last?"

She nodded.

"The one I wrote before I disappeared."

I took it slowly.

My name was written on the front.

But there was something underneath.

A second name.

Someone else's handwriting.

Someone who had added a note years later.

I looked closer.

My blood went cold.

Because the message was only five words.

"Ask Luca who I protected you from."

I looked up.

Luca was already standing.

His face had completely changed.

He knew exactly what those words meant.

Before anyone could speak, my phone vibrated.

Another unknown message.

I opened it.

One photo appeared.

It showed my mother.

Standing outside a building.

The same building where Luca opened his first office.

But the person standing beside her made my hands freeze.

Because it was someone I knew.

Someone who had helped Luca build his company.

Someone who had been at our wedding.

Someone who had hugged my children.

And underneath the photo was one sentence:

"Jessica, ask your husband why he was protecting the person who destroyed your family..."

Then the front door lock clicked.

Slowly.

May you like

From the inside.

Someone was already in the house.
