Chapter 6 - The Father Who Never Left

For eight years, I imagined my father's last moments.

I imagined him alone.

I imagined him afraid.

I imagined him disappearing into the darkness with nobody beside him.

But I was wrong.

Because Daniel Vale was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Older.

Changed.

But alive.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

My mind kept trying to reject what my eyes were seeing.

This wasn't possible.

It couldn't be.

"Elizabeth."

His voice broke something inside me.

Because it sounded exactly the same.

The same voice that used to wake me up when I fell asleep on the couch.

The same voice that promised me everything would be okay.

The same voice I thought I would never hear again.

My knees almost gave out.

Amelia caught my arm.

"Elizabeth."

I pushed her hand away.

Not because I hated her.

Because I didn't know what to feel.

"You were alive."

My voice was barely a whisper.

Daniel looked at me.

Pain crossed his face.

"Yes."

I stared at him.

"All this time?"

He lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

Eight years of pain.

Eight years of questions.

Eight years of believing I was alone.

And his answer was just one word.

Yes.

I felt anger rise before I could stop it.

"You let me believe you were dead."

Daniel didn't defend himself.

That somehow made it worse.

"You let me mourn you."

"I know."

"You let me disappear."

"I know."

My voice cracked.

"I changed everything about myself because I thought everyone I loved was gone."

The room became silent.

Even Dominic looked away.

Because this wasn't a business problem.

This was a family breaking apart.

Daniel took one step closer.

"I wanted to come back."

I laughed bitterly.

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

His face changed.

Fear.

Not of me.

Of the answer.

"Because if I came back, they would find you."

I froze.

"They?"

Daniel looked at Dominic.

And for the first time, I saw two powerful men who were not enemies.

They were survivors.

"They never stopped searching," Daniel said.

I looked at Dominic.

"Who?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Dominic spoke.

"The people who attacked the gala."

My chest tightened.

Daniel nodded.

"They weren't after your necklace."

He looked at me.

"They were after what was inside it."

I touched the silver pendant.

"You knew?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I knew your mother had hidden something there before she died."

I stared.

"My mother?"

A memory flashed.

A woman laughing.

A hand brushing my hair away from my face.

A voice telling me I was loved.

My mother had died when I was young.

At least, that was what I believed.

"What was inside?"

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

"We can't talk here."

Dominic immediately understood.

"Blackthorne House."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

I looked at both of them.

"No more secrets."

Nobody spoke.

I stepped forward.

"I spent eight years living with questions."

I looked at my father.

"I am not leaving this room until someone tells me the truth."

Daniel stared at me.

Then slowly nodded.

"You deserve that."

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small key.

Not a normal key.

An old metal key with strange markings engraved into it.

My eyes narrowed.

"Where did you get that?"

Daniel looked at the necklace.

"Your mother gave it to me."

I stopped breathing.

"My mother?"

He nodded.

"Before she died, she knew something was wrong."

The room became quiet.

"She discovered someone close to us was betraying the family."

Dominic crossed his arms.

"She found the first piece of evidence."

"And she hid it," Daniel said.

"Where?"

Daniel looked at me.

"With you."

My fingers moved toward the necklace.

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

I couldn't believe it.

My entire childhood.

My entire life.

The answer had been hanging around my neck.

"You knew."

I looked at Dominic.

He shook his head.

"Not until tonight."

I studied his face.

For once, I believed him.

Because Dominic Mercer looked just as shocked as I felt.

Daniel stepped closer.

"The necklace contains a hidden compartment."

I looked down.

"The message told me to open it."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Who sent that?"

"I don't know."

He became serious.

"Then they wanted you to find it."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What happens if I open it?"

Daniel looked at Dominic.

Then Amelia.

Then me.

"Everything changes."

That answer should have annoyed me.

But somehow, I understood.

Because everyone in my life had been protecting the same secret.

A secret big enough to destroy families.

Big enough to kill people.

Dominic walked toward the window.

"There's another problem."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He held up his phone.

The screen showed dozens of security alerts.

"Someone accessed Blackthorne House."

Daniel's face changed.

"When?"

"Ten minutes ago."

Amelia went pale.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the screen.

"That's impossible."

Dominic noticed.

"Why?"

Amelia's voice dropped.

"Because nobody knows that location."

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Someone does."

The hospital room suddenly felt too small.

Too exposed.

Dominic immediately began giving orders.

"Move Elizabeth."

I looked at him.

"Where?"

"Somewhere secure."

I shook my head.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"I am done being moved around like a piece on a chessboard."

Dominic stared at me.

"Elizabeth."

"No."

I looked at my father.

"Eight years ago, people decided my life without asking me."

Then Amelia.

"You lied to protect me."

Then Dominic.

"You investigated me without telling me."

I took a breath.

"But this ends now."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel smiled sadly.

"You sound like your mother."

The words hurt.

But they also felt like a piece of something I had lost.

A piece I never knew I needed.

A sudden sound interrupted us.

A phone ringing.

Not Dominic's.

Not Amelia's.

Mine.

Everyone looked.

The number was unknown.

Again.

I stared at the screen.

Nobody moved.

Daniel whispered:

"Don't answer."

But I already knew.

Whoever was calling knew I was here.

They knew my father had returned.

They knew the necklace was still with me.

My finger moved toward the screen.

I answered.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a voice came through.

A voice I didn't recognize.

But the words destroyed everything.

"Elizabeth Vale."

I froze.

The voice continued.

"You should ask your father why he really abandoned you."

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Guilt.

Then the stranger said one final sentence.

"The man standing beside you is not the only Vale who survived that night."

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

May you like

Because slowly, from the hallway outside the hospital room...

we heard another set of footsteps approaching.
