Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Took the Bullet

A six-year-old boy fell to the marble floor, screaming:
"Don't leave me!"
When Dominic Mercer arrived, he found a shattered diamond necklace beside the woman who had saved his son.
But three tiny letters were engraved inside the broken clasp:
"ELI."
Dominic suddenly realized this was not a random attack.
The first sound I remembered was glass breaking.
Not music.
Not laughter.
Not the hundreds of voices that had filled the ballroom moments before.
Only the violent explosion of crystal falling from above.
I opened my eyes and saw pieces of a chandelier raining down like frozen stars.
For one second, I didn't understand what was happening.
The Mercer Foundation Gala had been the kind of event where everyone pretended danger didn't exist. The kind of place where men in custom-made suits smiled while hiding secrets behind expensive watches. The kind of room where powerful people shook hands and promised loyalty they never intended to keep.
I was supposed to disappear into the background.
That was what I had always done.
Stay quiet.
Keep my head down.
Never let anyone look too closely.
But that night, everything changed because a little boy was standing in the path of a bullet.
I saw him before I heard the gun.
Caleb Mercer.
Six years old.
The only child of Dominic Mercer.
The boy everyone in that room protected without question.
He was holding a small glass of sparkling apple juice, wearing a dark green suit that looked like it had been made just for him. He looked completely out of place among the wealthy businessmen and powerful families surrounding him.
He wasn't supposed to be there alone.
But his father had stepped away for less than a minute.
That was all it took.
I noticed the man near the balcony before anyone else did.
Maybe it was instinct.
Maybe it was because I had spent eight years learning how to recognize danger before it reached me.
The man wasn't watching the guests.
He wasn't watching Dominic Mercer.
He was watching Caleb.
And then I saw the weapon.
I didn't think.
I moved.
My body reacted before my mind could understand why.
"Caleb!"
I shouted his name as I ran across the ballroom.
The first gunshot ripped through the air.
People screamed.
The second shot came before anyone had time to move.
I reached the boy.
I grabbed his shoulder.
I pushed him down.
And then everything became pain.
A force slammed into my body.
Then another.
Then another.
Three bullets.
Three burning waves of agony.
I fell against the marble floor, pulling Caleb with me.
The little boy was crying.
His hands were shaking.
"Miss... please wake up."
I wanted to answer him.
I wanted to tell him I was okay.
But my body felt heavier with every second.
The ballroom disappeared into chaos.
Guests ran.
Security rushed forward.
Someone shouted for a doctor.
Someone else shouted that the shooter had escaped.
But through all the noise, I only heard one voice.
"Caleb!"
Dominic Mercer.
I had seen his face in newspapers.
Everyone had.
A billionaire who built an empire before turning forty.
A man people respected.
A man people feared.
Rumors followed him everywhere, but nobody ever said them loudly.
They said Dominic Mercer was the kind of man who could destroy someone without raising his voice.
The kind of man who always knew the truth before anyone else.
But when he reached his son that night, I didn't see a billionaire.
I saw a terrified father.
He dropped to his knees beside Caleb.
"Are you hurt?"
Caleb shook his head and pointed at me.
"She saved me."
Dominic looked at me.
For the first time, our eyes met.
And I saw something I never expected.
Confusion.
Because Dominic Mercer recognized me.
Not my face.
Not exactly.
But something about me.
Something he couldn't understand.
"Who are you?" he whispered.
I tried to answer.
I couldn't.
Because the secret I had spent eight years protecting was already starting to break apart.
My name wasn't the one written on my employee records.
My history wasn't the one I had told people.
And the life I had built at Blackthorne House was based on a lie.
Eight years earlier, I had learned that some truths could get people killed.
So I buried mine.
I changed my name.
I changed my appearance.
I walked away from everything I knew.
I became someone nobody would notice.
A simple employee working inside the home of one of the most powerful families in America.
I thought I had escaped.
I thought the past had forgotten me.
I was wrong.
As Dominic pressed his hand against my wound, security surrounded us.
"Find the shooter," he ordered.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Everyone around him immediately obeyed.
But then Caleb reached toward me.
"She was scared," he whispered.
Dominic looked at his son.
"Who?"
"The bad man."
Caleb swallowed.
"He wasn't looking at me first."
The entire room went silent.
Dominic's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
The boy looked down at me.
"He was looking at her."
I closed my eyes.
Because that was the truth I had been afraid of.
The bullet was never meant for Caleb.
It was meant for me.
A few minutes later, I was being carried away by paramedics.
The last thing I remembered before darkness took me was Dominic standing beside the ambulance.
Everyone expected him to follow his son.
Instead, he stayed.
Watching me.
Like he was trying to solve a mystery.
Like he knew there was something hidden beneath the person everyone thought I was.
When I woke up, three days had passed.
The hospital room was quiet.
My body felt broken.
But I was alive.
For a moment, I believed maybe the nightmare was over.
Then I saw the envelope sitting on the table beside my bed.
No name.
No address.
Only one sentence written across the front.
A sentence that made my blood turn cold.
"Welcome back, Elizabeth Vale."
I stared at the words.
Nobody had called me that name in eight years.
Nobody alive was supposed to know it.
Then my phone, which had been disconnected for years, suddenly lit up.
One message appeared on the screen.
The sender was unknown.
May you like
The message contained only four words.
"Dominic knows everything now."
