Chapter 5 - The Secret Inside The Necklace

The hospital alarm started before anyone could explain why.

Red lights flashed across the hallway.

Footsteps rushed past the door.

Voices became louder.

But inside my room, everything felt strangely quiet.

Because I was still staring at the paper in my hand.

"Elizabeth Vale was never the target."

Five words.

Five words that changed everything.

For days, I had believed the attack was about my identity.

About my past.

About someone trying to erase the woman I had become.

But now I understood something worse.

I was only part of the plan.

The real target was something I carried.

Something my father left behind.

My necklace.

I touched the silver chain around my fingers.

The one thing I had never removed.

The one thing nobody had ever asked about.

Until now.

Dominic Mercer was standing near the door, his phone pressed against his ear.

"Lock down every exit."

A pause.

"No one leaves this floor."

His voice was calm.

But I could see the tension in his eyes.

That scared me.

Because Dominic Mercer was not a man who showed fear.

Not in front of enemies.

Not in front of his family.

Not even when bullets were fired inside his own ballroom.

But now he looked like he knew something terrible was about to happen.

Amelia moved closer to me.

"Elizabeth, give me the necklace."

I looked at her.

"No."

Her face changed.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was becoming a pattern.

Everyone knew the truth except me.

Everyone had pieces of my life except me.

"I spent eight years protecting this," I said.

My voice shook.

"I lost my name. My home. My family. I disappeared because I thought there was nothing left."

I looked at the necklace.

"But this was the one thing I kept."

Amelia looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because she knew.

She had always known.

"You knew what this was."

She didn't answer.

Dominic ended his call.

"She's right."

Both of us looked at him.

Dominic stepped closer.

"Amelia knew."

The betrayal hit immediately.

I turned toward my sister.

"You knew?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Elizabeth..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Don't."

My voice became quieter.

"Not until you tell me the truth."

Amelia sat down.

For the first time, she looked like she was no longer trying to hide anything.

"When your father gave you that necklace, he told me something."

"What?"

"He said if anything happened to him, I needed to make sure you kept it."

I stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because inside it was something that could destroy powerful people."

The room went silent.

Dominic looked toward the hallway.

Then back at us.

"Your father discovered financial records."

I frowned.

"About Mercer?"

"Yes."

"But you said you didn't know who was responsible."

"I didn't."

Dominic's expression hardened.

"But your father did."

I looked at the necklace.

"What kind of records?"

"Proof."

He paused.

"Proof that someone inside my organization was secretly selling information to people who wanted my family destroyed."

I swallowed.

"And my father found it."

"Yes."

"And he hid it with me."

Dominic nodded.

"But he didn't trust anyone else."

I looked at Amelia.

"Not even you?"

Pain crossed her face.

"He trusted me."

A pause.

"He just knew I was being watched."

That changed everything.

My sister wasn't the person who abandoned me.

She was someone trapped.

Someone who had been trying to survive too.

A loud sound interrupted us.

A crash from the hallway.

Dominic immediately moved.

He grabbed the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.

I froze.

"You brought a gun into a hospital?"

He looked at me.

"After what happened to you?"

He didn't need to explain.

The answer was obvious.

The door opened slightly.

A security guard appeared.

"Mr. Mercer."

Dominic lowered his weapon slightly.

"What happened?"

The guard looked nervous.

"The camera system went offline for thirty seconds."

Dominic's face changed.

"Thirty seconds?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

The guard hesitated.

"Outside this room."

Everyone went still.

Because that meant someone had been close.

Very close.

Dominic looked at me.

"Stay here."

I almost laughed.

After everything?

"No."

He looked surprised.

"I am not hiding again."

The words came out before I could stop them.

"I spent eight years running from people who wanted me gone."

I stood slowly despite the pain.

"I'm done running."

For a moment, Dominic said nothing.

Then something changed in his expression.

Respect.

Not pity.

Not protection.

Respect.

"Then you need to know what happens next."

"What?"

"If that necklace contains what I think it does..."

He looked toward the door.

"...everyone who wants it will come."

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

Another message.

Unknown number.

My hand froze.

Dominic noticed.

"Don't open it."

But I already had.

A photo appeared.

My heart stopped.

It was a picture of me.

Taken inside the hospital.

Minutes ago.

I looked at the doorway.

Someone had been watching.

The message underneath was short.

"Look under the necklace."

My breathing became uneven.

Slowly, I turned the necklace over.

For eight years, I had only seen the front.

A simple silver pendant.

Nothing else.

But now, under the light, I noticed something.

A tiny seam.

Almost invisible.

My father hadn't given me jewelry.

He had given me a container.

Dominic stepped closer.

"Don't open it here."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His eyes moved toward the hallway.

"Because whoever sent that message wants you to open it."

A cold feeling spread through me.

"They know I have it."

Dominic nodded.

"And they know we're here."

The lights suddenly went out.

The room fell into darkness.

Amelia grabbed my arm.

A second later, the emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Dim.

Silent.

Then we heard it.

The sound of a door opening somewhere down the hallway.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Dominic raised his weapon.

The security guard reached for his radio.

Nobody moved.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A voice I hadn't heard in eight years.

A voice I thought belonged to the dead.

"Elizabeth."

My entire body froze.

Because the person walking toward us wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't an enemy.

It was someone who knew exactly who I was.

And when the figure stepped into the red emergency light, Dominic lowered his weapon and whispered one name:

"Daniel..."
