Chapter 7 - The Truth That Could Destroy Them All

The private airport outside Ravenport was almost completely silent.

Unlike the crowded commercial terminals where thousands of people moved without direction, this place belonged to people who valued privacy more than convenience.

The roads were empty.

The hangars were guarded.

The cameras watched every entrance.

It was the kind of place where powerful people disappeared before anyone realized they were gone.

And tonight, Daniel Voss planned to be one of them.

His black luxury vehicle stopped near the private runway.

A driver stepped out and opened the door.

Daniel adjusted the sleeve of his expensive coat before stepping outside.

He looked calm.

Relaxed.

Almost amused.

Because men like Daniel Voss survived by believing one thing.

They were always smarter than everyone else.

He had spent years creating a perfect image.

A respected businessman.

A generous supporter of charities.

A loyal friend.

Nobody questioned him because nobody had a reason to.

And when questions finally appeared, he was already prepared to leave.

The plane waited ahead.

The engine was running.

Everything was ready.

Except one thing.

Daniel had underestimated how quickly Marco Duca moved.

The black vehicles appeared on the road behind him.

Daniel noticed immediately.

His expression changed for only a second.

But it was enough.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

Because Daniel Voss was not a man who panicked.

He was a man who adapted.

The cars stopped near the hangar.

Marco stepped out first.

Wearing a black coat, his expression unreadable.

Adrian followed behind him with two security members.

Daniel watched them approach.

Then he smiled.

“Marco Duca.”

His voice carried confidence.

Almost friendliness.

“I was wondering how long it would take.”

Marco stopped several feet away.

“You expected me.”

Daniel looked toward the plane.

“Of course.”

A pause.

“Actually, I expected you sooner.”

Adrian immediately became tense.

Marco remained still.

“You planned this.”

Daniel smiled slightly.

“I planned many things.”

The answer was carefully chosen.

Marco noticed.

“You knew Lena would reach my gate.”

Daniel said nothing.

That was enough.

Marco continued.

“You knew she would tell me your name.”

Daniel looked amused.

“Did she?”

His tone changed slightly.

“You listened to her?”

Marco’s eyes narrowed.

Daniel laughed softly.

“That’s interesting.”

“What is?”

“I spent months convincing people that Marco Duca was a man who only cared about power.”

He looked directly at him.

“But you proved me wrong.”

The words were not a compliment.

They were an observation.

“You cared.”

Silence.

Marco’s expression did not change.

But Adrian noticed.

Daniel was trying to understand him.

Trying to find weakness.

“Where is Lena?” Daniel asked.

Marco looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I want to know if she’s safe.”

The sentence sounded sincere.

But Marco had spent too many years around people like Daniel.

He recognized fake concern immediately.

“You don’t care if she’s safe.”

Daniel tilted his head.

“No?”

“No.”

Marco stepped closer.

“You care whether she talks.”

For the first time, Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Marco continued.

“And she already did.”

The silence that followed was different.

Daniel was no longer controlling the conversation.

That bothered him.

“You think you understand what happened,” Daniel said.

“I know enough.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You know what Lena told you.”

He stepped closer.

“But you don’t know the whole story.”

Marco looked at him.

“Then tell me.”

Daniel smiled again.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The part of you everyone misunderstands.”

A pause.

“You want the truth.”

Marco said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“That is your weakness.”

Adrian looked at him coldly.

“Careful.”

Daniel ignored him.

“You built an empire by making people afraid of you.”

He looked at Marco.

“But deep down, you still believe people can be saved.”

Marco’s eyes became colder.

“You are confusing mercy with weakness.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“Or maybe that is exactly why you lose.”

Marco studied him.

“Why did you do it?”

The question finally came.

Not emotional.

Not angry.

Just direct.

Daniel looked toward the plane.

Then back.

“Because people like Victor Carter are useful.”

Marco’s jaw tightened slightly.

“You used him.”

“Yes.”

“You used Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“And Lena?”

Daniel remained silent.

That silence answered everything.

Marco’s expression hardened.

“You never saw her as a person.”

Daniel shrugged.

“She was a problem.”

Adrian moved slightly forward.

Marco stopped him with a hand.

He wanted Daniel to keep talking.

People revealed themselves when they believed they were winning.

Daniel continued.

“Victor owed money.”

“He was desperate.”

“Ethan wanted a better life.”

“He was easy to convince.”

Daniel looked almost bored.

“And Lena…”

A pause.

“She was unfortunate.”

The words hung in the air.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Because there were some things even experienced people found difficult to hear.

Marco looked at Daniel.

“You call that unfortunate?”

Daniel looked confused.

“What else would you call it?”

Marco stepped closer.

“I would call it a choice.”

Daniel smiled.

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“You believe everyone has a choice.”

Marco looked at him.

“They do.”

Daniel laughed.

“You really believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Even people with nothing?”

“Yes.”

“Even people trapped by circumstances?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at him.

And for a moment, Marco saw something.

Not confidence.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

Because Daniel realized something.

Marco did not think like him.

That made him unpredictable.

“Tell me one thing,” Marco said.

Daniel waited.

“Why use my name?”

The question changed the atmosphere.

Because that was the one part that never made sense.

Daniel could have blamed anyone.

He could have hidden behind Costa.

He could have created another story.

But he chose Marco.

Why?

Daniel looked away briefly.

Then answered.

“Because it was believable.”

Marco watched him.

“Explain.”

“People already believe you are capable of anything.”

A pause.

“So when Lena heard your name, she believed it.”

Daniel looked at him.

“And when you found out, I knew exactly what you would do.”

Marco said nothing.

“You would investigate.”

Another pause.

“You would search for answers.”

Daniel smiled.

“You would destroy everyone involved.”

Marco’s expression remained calm.

“But you made one mistake.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“What?”

“You thought I was angry because my name was used.”

A pause.

“I’m angry because hers was.”

Daniel stared at him.

Because he understood.

Marco was not protecting his reputation.

He was protecting Lena.

And that made everything more dangerous.

Suddenly, Adrian’s phone rang.

He answered quickly.

Then his expression changed.

Marco noticed.

“What happened?”

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Then back at Marco.

“We found another account.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Marco saw it.

“What account?”

Adrian spoke.

“The original payments.”

A pause.

“The money didn’t come from Daniel.”

Silence.

Marco looked at Daniel.

“Who?”

Adrian hesitated.

Then said:

“Rafael Costa.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

A small reaction.

But enough.

Marco noticed.

Because Daniel Voss was many things.

A liar.

A manipulator.

A planner.

But he was not expecting that name.

And that meant something.

Daniel was not the top.

He was only another piece.

Marco looked at him.

“You were working for Costa.”

Daniel said nothing.

Marco stepped closer.

“No.”

A realization formed.

“You were afraid of him.”

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely uncomfortable.

And that was the answer.

The man who manipulated everyone.

The man who controlled Victor and Ethan.

The man who believed he understood power.

Was also trapped.

By someone more dangerous.

Daniel looked toward the plane.

Then toward Marco.

“You don’t understand what you’re involving yourself in.”

Marco stared at him.

“Then explain.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You should let this go.”

Marco almost smiled.

“After what happened to Lena?”

Daniel said nothing.

Marco’s voice became colder.

“Never.”

The police sirens could be heard in the distance.

Not because Marco called them.

Because Adrian had already prepared everything.

Daniel looked around.

For the first time that night, he realized something.

He was not escaping.

He was being cornered.

Marco turned away.

As he walked back toward the vehicles, Daniel called out.

“You think this ends with me?”

Marco stopped.

Daniel’s voice became serious.

“You have no idea who you’re fighting.”

Marco looked back.

“That’s why I’m going to find out.”

The cars disappeared into the night.

Daniel Voss remained standing beside the plane.

A man who spent years controlling secrets.

A man who believed he could manipulate everyone.

But now one truth had finally become clear.

The person he underestimated was not Marco Duca.

It was the injured girl who survived long enough to reach him.

May you like

And because Lena Carter survived…

Every secret Daniel had protected was beginning to collapse.
