Chapter 4 - The Mafia Boss Who Refused to Look Away

Lena Carter stared at the photograph on Marco Duca’s phone as if looking at it long enough could change what she was seeing.
But it did not.
The image remained the same.
Victor Carter.
Her uncle.
The man who raised her.
The man who told her he would always protect her.
Standing beside Ethan.
The man she loved.
The man who held her hand while promising everything would be okay.
The man who helped destroy her life.
For several seconds, Lena forgot how to breathe.
“No…”
The word escaped quietly.
Not because she did not believe it.
Because some part of her still hoped she was wrong.
Some part of her still wanted there to be an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
Anything.
Marco watched her carefully.
He had seen people react to betrayal before.
Anger.
Violence.
Denial.
But Lena’s reaction was different.
She looked like someone watching the final piece of a broken memory fall into place.
“How long?” Marco asked.
Lena did not answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
“How long were they working together?”
The question sounded simple.
But Marco knew it was not.
He was not asking about Ethan and Victor.
He was asking about the moment Lena’s life had started becoming a lie.
Finally, she looked away.
“I don’t know.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“I thought…”
She stopped.
Marco waited.
“I thought Ethan was the only person who understood me.”
The sadness in her voice was more painful than anger.
Because anger meant someone still had the strength to fight.
But disappointment was different.
Disappointment came from losing something you thought was real.
Lena slowly sat back.
“When my parents died, I didn’t have anyone.”
She looked down at her hands.
“My uncle became my family.”
A pause.
“He told me he would never leave me.”
Marco remained silent.
“He was the one person I trusted.”
Her fingers tightened.
“And then Ethan came into my life.”
A small, painful smile appeared.
“He was different from everyone else.”
Marco looked at her.
“Different how?”
“He listened.”
The answer came immediately.
“He remembered small things.”
She swallowed.
“He knew what made me happy. What scared me. What I wanted for the future.”
Her voice became quieter.
“I thought someone finally chose me.”
The room became silent.
Marco understood something.
The most dangerous betrayals were rarely committed by strangers.
Strangers could hurt you.
But people you trusted could destroy the parts of you that were hardest to rebuild.
“Why would Ethan do this?” Marco asked.
Lena shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she paused.
“No.”
Her expression changed.
“I think I do.”
Marco waited.
“He always talked about money.”
She looked ashamed.
“I ignored it because I thought he was just worried about the future.”
Her eyes moved toward the photograph again.
“He wanted a better life.”
Marco’s expression hardened.
“By selling yours?”
Lena looked down.
She had no answer.
Because there was no answer.
Some people did terrible things because they were forced.
Others did terrible things because they were willing.
And Lena was beginning to understand which kind of people stood against her.
A knock came at the door.
Adrian entered.
“Marco.”
Marco turned.
“What did you find?”
Adrian looked briefly at Lena before answering.
“More than expected.”
Lena immediately became tense.
Marco noticed.
“You’re safe here,” he said.
She looked at him.
It was strange.
Those words should have comforted her.
But after everything, safety felt like something she no longer understood.
Adrian placed a folder on the table.
“Victor Carter has been moving money through several accounts connected to shell companies.”
Marco opened the folder.
“And Costa?”
“Connected.”
Adrian continued.
“But there is something unusual.”
“What?”
“Victor wasn’t just borrowing money.”
Marco looked at him.
“He was paying someone.”
A silence followed.
Lena frowned.
“Paying who?”
Adrian looked at Marco.
“We don’t know yet.”
Marco flipped through the documents.
The pattern was obvious.
Victor had been desperate.
But not desperate enough to randomly sacrifice Lena.
Someone had offered him something.
Money.
Protection.
Power.
Something valuable enough to make him betray his own niece.
“Find the connection between Victor and Costa,” Marco said.
Adrian nodded.
“Already working on it.”
Then Adrian hesitated.
“There’s one more thing.”
Marco looked up.
“What?”
“Someone tried to access our security records tonight.”
The room changed instantly.
Lena looked confused.
Marco became completely still.
“From where?”
“Outside the property.”
Adrian paused.
“But whoever did it knew exactly what they were looking for.”
Marco understood.
They were not checking his security.
They were checking Lena.
Someone wanted to know if she reached him.
Someone wanted confirmation.
That meant one thing.
They were afraid.
“Can you trace it?”
Adrian shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Marco looked toward the window.
The rain had stopped.
But the city outside felt darker than before.
Someone had sent Lena to his gate.
Someone wanted him to know.
The question was why.
Lena watched him.
“You think they expected me to come here.”
Marco turned.
“Yes.”
The answer frightened her.
“Why?”
“Because they wanted you found.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
Marco walked closer.
“Think about it.”
His voice remained calm.
“If they wanted to hide what happened, they would have made sure you disappeared.”
Lena became pale.
“But they didn’t.”
“No.”
Marco looked at the photograph again.
“They let you escape.”
A long silence.
Lena slowly understood.
“They wanted me to tell you.”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
Marco had been asking himself the same question.
Maybe someone wanted to threaten him.
Maybe someone wanted to create a conflict.
Maybe someone wanted him to destroy Costa.
But there was another possibility.
Someone wanted to see what he would do.
And that interested him.
Because whoever planned this knew something about Marco.
They knew he would not ignore a victim standing at his gate.
They knew his reputation.
But they did not understand the difference between reputation and reality.
Marco Duca was feared because people believed he had no mercy.
They were wrong.
Marco had mercy.
He simply reserved it for people who deserved it.
And Lena Carter did.
A sudden movement caught his attention.
Lena had stood up.
Too quickly.
Her body immediately reacted.
She nearly fell.
Marco reached forward and caught her arm.
She froze.
Not because he touched her.
Because she realized something.
She had expected him to be angry.
To blame her.
To see her as a problem.
Instead, he was holding her steady.
“You need to rest,” Marco said.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
She looked at him.
“Because if they know I’m here…”
She stopped.
Marco understood.
She was afraid they would come for her.
“You think they will find you.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And if they do, they’ll hurt everyone here.”
Marco looked at her.
For the first time, Lena was not thinking about herself.
Even after everything.
She was worried about others.
That told Marco more about her character than any background check could.
“You don’t know who I am,” he said.
Lena looked confused.
“What?”
“You think danger follows me.”
She stayed silent.
“But you don’t understand something.”
Marco released her arm slowly.
“Danger was already following you before you reached my gate.”
The words hit harder than she expected.
Because they were true.
Her life had been falling apart long before tonight.
Marco stepped back.
“And now it has made one mistake.”
Lena looked at him.
“What mistake?”
His eyes became cold.
“It came too close.”
The next morning, Ravenport woke up unaware that something had changed.
People continued walking through the streets.
Businesses opened.
Cars moved through traffic.
The city looked normal.
But behind the walls of the Duca estate, a quiet war had begun.
Adrian entered Marco’s office carrying new information.
“We found something.”
Marco looked up.
“What?”
Adrian placed a document on the desk.
“A payment record.”
Marco opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because the name connected to the transaction was not Rafael Costa.
Not Victor Carter.
Not Ethan.
Someone else.
Someone Marco knew.
Someone close enough to know how his empire worked.
Marco slowly closed the file.
“Impossible.”
Adrian watched him.
“Who is it?”
Marco looked toward the window.
For the first time in years, there was something rare in his expression.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Concern.
Because the person behind everything was not outside his world.
They were inside it.
May you like
And whoever they were…
They had just declared war against Marco Duca.
