Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside the Family

Marco Duca had learned a long time ago that enemies were easier to deal with than traitors.

Enemies announced themselves.

They made threats.

They showed their intentions through actions.

But traitors were different.

They smiled.

They shook your hand.

They stood beside you while quietly preparing the moment they would strike.

That was why Marco hated betrayal more than violence.

Violence was predictable.

Betrayal was personal.

And now, for the first time in years, he was looking at evidence that someone inside his own circle had helped destroy Lena Carter’s life.

The document remained on his desk.

A single name.

A single connection.

A name that should not have been there.

Marco stared at it without moving.

Across the room, Adrian Vale waited silently.

He knew better than to interrupt Marco when he was thinking.

The most dangerous moments were not when Marco was angry.

They were when he became completely quiet.

“Run it again,” Marco finally said.

Adrian nodded.

“We checked three times.”

“No mistakes?”

“None.”

Marco leaned back in his chair.

The office was silent.

The city outside continued moving as if nothing had changed.

But Marco knew better.

Something hidden had finally revealed itself.

“What was the transaction for?” Marco asked.

Adrian opened the file.

“The payment was disguised as a consulting fee.”

“For?”

“A security arrangement.”

Marco looked at him.

“Security for who?”

Adrian hesitated.

That hesitation told Marco enough.

“Say it.”

“Lena Carter.”

The room became still.

For a moment, Marco said nothing.

Because the answer was worse than he expected.

Someone had not only known about Lena.

Someone had been monitoring her.

Someone had been involved before she ever reached his gate.

“They wanted her found,” Marco said quietly.

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“But they also wanted her alive.”

“Yes.”

Marco stood and walked toward the window.

That detail bothered him.

If the goal was simply to remove Lena, there were easier ways.

Cleaner ways.

Instead, someone allowed her to escape.

Someone allowed her to reach him.

Someone wanted a reaction.

The question was not whether Lena had been betrayed.

She had.

The question was who benefited from Marco discovering it.

“Find out everything about this security arrangement,” Marco ordered.

Adrian nodded.

“Already started.”

“Quietly.”

Adrian understood.

“No one knows?”

“No one.”

Because if someone inside his organization was involved, the moment they realized Marco was investigating, they would disappear.

And Marco wanted answers more than revenge.

For now.

Meanwhile, Lena sat alone in the mansion library.

She had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same images.

Ethan standing beside Victor.

Her uncle’s expression.

The abandoned building.

The moment she realized nobody was coming to save her.

She had spent years believing she was unlucky.

That bad things simply happened.

But now she wondered if every painful moment had been leading somewhere.

If people around her had been making choices she never knew about.

The door opened.

Lena looked up.

It was Marco.

She immediately sat straighter.

“You should be resting,” he said.

She looked away.

“I’m not very good at that.”

Marco noticed the faint smile that almost appeared.

Almost.

“You were never given the chance.”

The words surprised her.

Because they were not a question.

They were an observation.

Lena looked at him.

“What happened to you?”

Marco paused.

It was the first time she had asked about him.

Most people wanted to know his power.

His money.

His reputation.

Very few wanted to know the person behind it.

“Why do you ask?”

“Because you understand.”

A quiet moment passed.

“You looked at me last night like you knew what it felt like.”

Marco said nothing.

Because she was right.

Not completely.

But enough.

He had spent years surrounded by people who wanted something from him.

Respect.

Fear.

Protection.

Money.

Almost nobody saw the cost of carrying power.

“Everyone has something they lost,” Marco finally said.

Lena looked at him.

“What did you lose?”

Marco looked away.

“My trust.”

The answer was simple.

But it carried weight.

Lena understood.

Because she had lost hers too.

Before she could respond, Marco’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Adrian.”

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression changed.

Lena noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

Marco ended the call.

“Your uncle disappeared.”

Her face changed.

“What?”

“Victor Carter left his house two hours ago.”

“Where did he go?”

“We don’t know.”

Lena became nervous.

“He knows I escaped.”

“Yes.”

“He’ll come after me.”

Marco looked at her.

“No.”

She seemed surprised by the certainty.

“How do you know?”

“Because if Victor wanted you dead, you would not have made it here.”

Lena looked confused.

“Then what does he want?”

Marco walked toward the table.

“He wants something else.”

“What?”

“That depends on who is controlling him.”

The answer frightened her.

Because it meant Victor was not the person pulling the strings.

He was only a piece.

A small piece.

A disposable one.

A few hours later, Marco received another message.

This time, it was not from Adrian.

It was from an unknown number.

One sentence.

You should have stayed out of this.

Marco read it once.

Then deleted it.

Lena watched him.

“Was that them?”

“Yes.”

“Are you scared?”

Marco looked at her.

The question was unexpected.

Most people would never ask him that.

“No.”

Lena studied him.

“Why?”

“Because fear is useful.”

She frowned.

“But you don’t feel it?”

Marco walked toward the window.

“Everyone feels fear.”

A pause.

“The difference is whether you let it make decisions for you.”

Lena looked down.

That answer stayed with her.

Because for the first time in weeks, maybe months, someone was not telling her to be afraid.

Someone was telling her she could choose what happened next.

Later that evening, Adrian returned with new information.

This time, his expression was different.

More serious.

“Marco.”

One word.

But Marco knew.

Something had happened.

“What?”

Adrian placed a folder on the desk.

“We found the person who authorized the payment.”

Marco opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

A photograph was attached.

Lena’s face appeared in the doorway behind him.

“Who is it?”

Marco looked at the image.

Then at Lena.

The color disappeared from her face.

Because she recognized him too.

Not Victor.

Not Ethan.

Someone else.

Someone she never expected.

“Impossible,” Lena whispered.

Marco looked at her.

“You know him?”

She nodded slowly.

“No…”

Her voice trembled.

“He was there.”

“Where?”

“The night I escaped.”

The room became silent.

Marco looked back at the photograph.

A man who had been close enough to witness everything.

Close enough to know Lena’s story.

Close enough to hide the truth.

“Who is he?” Marco asked.

Lena swallowed.

“My uncle’s closest friend.”

Marco’s eyes narrowed.

“What’s his name?”

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Daniel Voss.”

The name meant something.

Not because Marco knew him personally.

Because Daniel Voss had no reason to be involved.

He was supposed to be harmless.

A businessman.

A respected figure.

A man who stayed away from criminal conflicts.

But Marco knew something now.

Appearances were often the best disguise.

And Daniel Voss had been wearing his for years.

Marco closed the folder.

“Find him.”

Adrian nodded.

“And if he runs?”

Marco looked toward the dark windows.

“Then we find out what he’s running from.”

Lena watched Marco carefully.

“You’re helping me.”

It was not a question.

Marco looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

For a moment, he said nothing.

Because the answer was complicated.

He did not know Lena before that night.

He did not owe her anything.

But he knew what it felt like to have everyone around you become someone you could not trust.

He knew what it felt like to discover the people closest to you were the ones who caused the most damage.

Finally, he answered.

“Because someone decided your life was worth sacrificing.”

A pause.

“And I want to know who gave them permission.”

Outside, the city lights continued shining.

But somewhere in Ravenport, someone was realizing a terrible mistake.

They thought Lena Carter was a victim.

They thought she was weak.

They thought sending her to Marco Duca would remove a problem.

They were wrong.

Because Lena had not reached Marco’s gate to ask for rescue.

She had unknowingly brought him the one thing he valued more than power.

May you like

The truth.

And Marco Duca was about to uncover everything they had spent years hiding.
