Chapter 6 - The Enemy Wearing a Familiar Face

Daniel Voss had spent twenty years building a reputation around one simple idea.
Trust.
He was the kind of man people invited to charity events.
The kind of man whose name appeared in newspapers beside words like respected, successful, and reliable.
He donated money to hospitals.
He attended business meetings with politicians.
He shook hands with wealthy executives and smiled for cameras.
To most of Ravenport, Daniel Voss was proof that a person could become powerful without becoming dangerous.
But Marco Duca knew better than most.
Danger rarely looked dangerous.
Sometimes it wore an expensive suit.
Sometimes it spoke politely.
Sometimes it spent years convincing everyone that it was harmless.
And now Daniel Voss’s name had appeared in the middle of the one situation that had caught Marco’s attention more than anything else in years.
Lena Carter.
The girl who arrived at his gate bleeding.
The girl who believed her own family had sold her.
The girl who unknowingly carried the first clue toward uncovering a betrayal hidden beneath layers of lies.
Marco stood in his office, looking at the photograph of Daniel Voss.
Adrian Vale stood nearby.
Neither man spoke for several seconds.
Because both understood the same thing.
If Daniel Voss was involved, then the situation was far larger than they originally believed.
“He doesn’t match the profile,” Adrian finally said.
Marco looked at him.
“That’s why he’s dangerous.”
Adrian nodded.
Exactly.
People like Rafael Costa were obvious.
They wanted power.
They wanted money.
They wanted everyone to know they were dangerous.
Men like Daniel Voss were different.
They understood something most criminals never learned.
The person standing in the light was rarely the person controlling the shadows.
“Tell me everything,” Marco said.
Adrian opened the folder.
“Daniel Voss. Fifty-four years old. Owns several investment companies. Clean record. No criminal connections officially.”
“Officially?”
Adrian gave a small nod.
“We found unusual financial activity.”
“How unusual?”
“Several companies connected to him moved money through accounts controlled by Victor Carter.”
Marco’s eyes narrowed.
“And Costa?”
“Indirect connection.”
Adrian placed another document on the desk.
“Costa’s organization used one of Daniel’s shipping companies three months ago.”
Silence.
Marco understood.
This was not a random partnership.
Daniel Voss was the bridge.
The connection between people who should never have been connected.
Victor Carter.
Rafael Costa.
And now Lena’s disappearance.
“How long has he known Lena?” Marco asked.
Adrian checked the file.
“According to records, Daniel knew Victor for almost fifteen years.”
Marco leaned back.
Fifteen years.
Long enough to know everything.
Long enough to understand exactly how to manipulate someone.
Long enough to know Lena was vulnerable.
The anger that appeared in Marco was not loud.
It never was.
Marco Duca did not need to raise his voice to show someone they had crossed a line.
His silence was usually enough.
Meanwhile, Lena sat in the dining room, untouched food in front of her.
She had barely spoken since hearing Daniel Voss’s name.
Marco noticed when he entered.
“You know something.”
Lena looked up.
Her eyes were tired.
“I know who he is.”
Marco sat across from her.
“Tell me.”
Lena hesitated.
“He was always around.”
“Around where?”
“My uncle’s house.”
She looked down.
“When I was younger, I thought he was just a family friend.”
“What changed?”
Lena took a slow breath.
“Nothing.”
That answer surprised Marco.
“Nothing?”
“That was the problem.”
She looked at him.
“He never changed.”
Marco listened.
“He was always calm. Always polite. Always helpful.”
A pause.
“He was the person everyone trusted.”
Marco understood.
The most dangerous people were often not the ones who appeared cruel.
They were the ones who made cruelty look reasonable.
“What happened the night you escaped?” Marco asked.
Lena became quiet.
For a moment, Marco thought she would refuse.
Then she started speaking.
“After Ethan and my uncle left me at the building, I waited.”
Her voice became softer.
“I thought someone would come back.”
She swallowed.
“I thought maybe Ethan would realize what he was doing.”
A painful silence.
“He didn’t.”
Marco’s expression remained controlled.
“But someone else came.”
“Daniel?”
Lena nodded.
“He walked in like he owned the place.”
She closed her eyes.
“He wasn’t surprised to see me.”
That detail mattered.
Marco leaned forward.
“What do you mean?”
“He looked at me like he already knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That I would be there.”
The room became silent.
Marco already suspected it.
Now he had confirmation.
Daniel Voss was not reacting to the situation.
He had planned for it.
Lena continued.
“He told Victor everything would be fine.”
Marco watched her carefully.
“What else?”
“He said nobody would look for me.”
Her voice shook.
“He said people like us disappear every day.”
Marco’s expression hardened.
People like us.
That sentence revealed more than Daniel probably realized.
To Daniel, Lena was not a person.
She was an object.
A problem.
Something that could be removed.
“What happened next?”
Lena looked at her hands.
“I heard them arguing.”
“About what?”
“Money.”
Marco waited.
“Victor said he wanted more.”
“And Daniel?”
“He laughed.”
A pause.
“He told my uncle that he should be grateful.”
Lena looked up.
“He said he was lucky someone powerful was willing to clean up his mistakes.”
Marco felt something cold settle inside him.
Someone powerful.
The phrase appeared again.
The same phrase used to connect everything back to him.
Daniel had been building a story.
A story where Marco Duca was the invisible force behind every terrible thing happening to Lena.
But why?
That was the question.
Why frame him?
Why create a connection that could eventually expose them?
Unless…
Marco stood suddenly.
Lena looked surprised.
“What?”
Marco walked toward the window.
“He wanted you to come to me.”
Lena frowned.
“What?”
“Daniel knew you would escape.”
She shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does.”
Marco turned.
“Think about it.”
His voice was calm.
“He knew you were desperate.”
Lena listened.
“He knew you had nowhere else to go.”
A pause.
“He knew the only person powerful enough to scare your enemies was me.”
The realization slowly appeared on her face.
“He wanted me to tell you.”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
Marco looked away.
Because he finally understood something.
Daniel Voss had not made a mistake.
He had made a calculation.
He wanted Marco involved.
He wanted Marco angry.
He wanted Marco searching.
And that meant Daniel wanted something from him.
“What are you going to do?” Lena asked.
Marco looked at her.
“Find him.”
“And then?”
A long pause.
“Then I ask questions.”
Lena almost smiled.
Almost.
Because she understood what that meant.
Marco Duca did not ask questions the way ordinary people did.
But before Marco could continue, Adrian entered quickly.
That alone was unusual.
Adrian never interrupted.
Something had happened.
“Marco.”
One word.
Marco immediately turned.
“What?”
“We found Daniel.”
Lena froze.
“Where?”
Adrian looked serious.
“At the private airport.”
Marco’s expression changed.
“He’s leaving.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“His plane is scheduled to leave in forty minutes.”
Marco picked up his coat.
Lena stood.
“Wait.”
Everyone stopped.
She looked at Marco.
“Take me with you.”
Marco immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“I need to see him.”
“No.”
“Marco—”
“You are not going near him.”
The firmness in his voice made her stop.
Not anger.
Concern.
Something she was still learning to recognize.
“He already hurt you once,” Marco said.
His eyes met hers.
“I won’t give him another chance.”
Lena stood silent.
Because those words were different.
Not a promise from someone trying to control her.
A promise from someone trying to protect her.
Marco turned toward Adrian.
“Prepare the car.”
Adrian nodded.
As Marco walked away, Lena watched him.
For the first time since everything began, she felt something she thought she had lost forever.
Not trust.
Not yet.
Something smaller.
Something more fragile.
Hope.
Outside the mansion, the city lights reflected across the wet streets.
Daniel Voss believed he had planned everything perfectly.
He believed Lena was just a loose end.
He believed Marco Duca would react exactly as expected.
But Daniel had forgotten one important thing.
Marco Duca was not dangerous because he was powerful.
May you like
He was dangerous because once he decided something mattered…
He never stopped.
