Chapter 7 - The Recording Daniel Never Wanted Me to Hear

"Sarah."

Daniel stood in the doorway.

When I saw him holding the same brown box from the video, I realized he had come to the hospital for one reason.

Not to apologize.

Not to check on me.

To take back what he thought belonged to him.

The room felt smaller.

My hand immediately moved toward the call button beside the bed.

Daniel noticed.

And he smiled.

Not the angry smile.

Not the fake husband smile.

Something colder.

"You're afraid of me now?"

I stared at him.

"I should be."

For the first time, Daniel didn't have an answer.

Emma woke up from the chair.

The second she saw him, she stood.

"What are you doing here?"

Daniel ignored her.

His eyes stayed on me.

"Sarah, you need to understand something."

I laughed quietly.

It surprised even me.

"Understand what?"

"That everything looks worse than it really is."

I stared at him.

That sentence.

Those exact words.

He had used them my entire marriage.

Every time I questioned him.

Every time something felt wrong.

Everything was always "not what it looked like."

But somehow, it was always exactly what it looked like.

"You came here to explain?"

Daniel stepped inside.

"I came here because you are making a mistake."

Emma moved between us.

"You need to leave."

Daniel finally looked at her.

"This doesn't involve you."

Emma didn't move.

"Actually, it does. She almost died."

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, his calm expression cracked.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Guilt.

Fear.

Something he couldn't hide.

"Sarah," he said softly.

"Tell her to leave."

I looked at him.

The old me would have listened.

The old me would have tried to keep peace.

The old me would have worried about hurting his feelings.

But that woman was gone.

"Emma stays."

Daniel looked disappointed.

Like I had failed a test.

Then he placed the brown box on the table.

"You saw the video."

I froze.

So he knew.

"You sent those messages?"

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

I watched his face.

"You expect me to believe that?"

He looked away.

For the first time, he seemed tired.

Not angry.

Not controlling.

Just tired.

"Sarah, there are things you don't know."

I looked at the box.

"Then tell me."

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Daniel sat down.

"When we met, I wasn't the person you thought I was."

I almost smiled.

"You were married."

His eyes moved toward me.

"So Claire found you."

I felt my chest tighten.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

Daniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

"How long did you know she would find me?"

He looked down.

"Months."

Emma gasped.

"Months?"

Daniel ignored her.

"I was trying to protect you."

I stared at him.

"Protect me from what?"

He looked at the box.

"From the truth."

I felt anger rise.

"The truth is that you lied to me."

"No."

His voice became sharper.

"The truth is that you don't understand what happened."

I shook my head.

"Then explain."

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because explanations were impossible when there was no excuse.

Finally, he reached for the box.

I stopped him.

"What is inside?"

He looked at my hand.

"Sarah."

"What is inside?"

His face changed.

And that was the answer.

Something inside that box mattered.

Something dangerous.

The hospital room door opened.

Detective Reynolds entered.

His eyes immediately went to Daniel.

"Mr. Carter."

Daniel stood.

"This is a private conversation."

The detective stepped closer.

"No, it's not."

Daniel looked irritated.

"You have no reason to be here."

The detective held up a folder.

"Actually, I do."

Daniel became silent.

"We found the storage unit."

Daniel's expression changed.

Just for a second.

But everyone saw it.

"You opened it?"

The detective nodded.

"Yes."

I watched Daniel.

He wasn't worried about the box anymore.

He was worried about what they found.

"What was inside?" I asked.

The detective looked at me.

"Evidence."

My heart started beating faster.

"What kind of evidence?"

He opened the folder.

"Photos."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Stop."

The detective ignored him.

"Documents."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Stop."

"And a recording."

The room went completely silent.

I looked at Daniel.

A recording.

Something about that word terrified him.

"What recording?"

The detective looked at Daniel.

"One that was made seven years ago."

Claire's face appeared in my mind.

Emily.

The missing girl.

The secret Daniel buried.

"Play it."

Daniel looked at me.

"Sarah, don't."

I had never heard fear in his voice before.

Not real fear.

Not like this.

The detective took out a small device.

He pressed a button.

At first, there was only static.

Then a child's voice.

A little girl's voice.

"Mommy?"

Claire would have recognized it instantly.

I felt tears forming.

Emily.

The recording continued.

"Mommy, I don't know where Daddy is taking me."

The room froze.

Daniel looked away.

The little girl's voice continued.

"He said we were going somewhere safe."

My breathing stopped.

Emma covered her mouth.

Then another voice appeared.

Daniel's voice.

Younger.

Calmer.

"Emily, you need to trust me."

The recording became louder.

"I promise nobody will find us."

My entire body went cold.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone heard it.

Daniel's voice.

Speaking to a missing child.

The detective stopped the recording.

"That's enough for now."

I stared at Daniel.

"No."

He looked at me.

"No?"

"Keep playing."

Daniel shook his head.

"Sarah, you don't understand."

I looked at him.

"Then help me understand."

The detective restarted the recording.

This time, there was a long pause.

Then Emily whispered:

"Is Mommy coming with us?"

The next sound was Daniel breathing.

Then he said:

"No."

A tear fell from my eye.

The detective stopped it again.

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at me.

"Sarah..."

I couldn't hear him.

All I could hear was that little girl's voice.

A child asking if her mother was coming.

And Daniel saying no.

"Where was she taken?"

My voice was quiet.

Daniel didn't answer.

"Where was Emily?"

Still nothing.

The detective stepped closer.

"Mr. Carter, now would be a good time to explain."

Daniel looked at the floor.

Then he said something that shocked all of us.

"Emily wasn't taken."

Claire's daughter.

The missing girl.

The child everyone searched for.

Daniel looked up.

"She was hidden."

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"By who?"

Daniel looked directly at me.

And I knew before he spoke.

Because his expression wasn't guilt.

It was fear.

"By someone who knew exactly what I was doing."

The detective moved closer.

"Who?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His face turned pale.

He answered.

"Hello?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel's expression changed.

The color disappeared from his face.

"That's impossible."

A pause.

Then he whispered:

"You're dead."

The entire room froze.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

I looked at him.

"Who was it?"

He didn't answer.

The detective stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter?"

Daniel looked toward the door.

May you like

And then someone standing outside the hospital room spoke his name...

"Daniel."
