Chapter 5 - The File Hidden Behind His Name

"Sarah, you need to see this."

The police officer placed the file on my hospital bed.

When I opened it, I discovered a missing person report connected to Daniel Carter.

But one sentence had been highlighted in yellow:

"Last person confirmed with the child: Daniel Carter."

Daniel had spent seven years hiding a name.

And now that name was sitting in front of me.

I couldn't breathe.

Not because of my fever.

Not because of my injured leg.

Because the person I trusted most had a secret so large that strangers were uncovering it while I was lying in a hospital bed.

The officer introduced himself as Detective Mark Reynolds.

He didn't look at Daniel like a suspect.

Not yet.

He looked at him like someone who had been waiting years for answers.

"Mrs. Carter," he said carefully, "I understand this is overwhelming."

I stared at the file.

The picture of the little girl was still visible.

A young girl with brown hair.

A small smile.

A life that disappeared.

"What was her name?"

My voice barely came out.

Detective Reynolds looked down.

"Emily Wilson."

Claire closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was immediate.

I looked at her.

"You knew her."

She nodded.

"She was my daughter."

The room became silent.

I looked back at the photograph.

Seven years.

Seven years of someone missing.

Seven years of Daniel building a new life.

Seven years of me sleeping beside a man who had never told me the truth.

"Why didn't I know about this?"

Nobody answered.

And somehow, that was the answer.

Because Daniel had made sure I didn't.

The detective opened the file.

"There are things you need to understand before you make any decisions."

I looked at him.

"What decisions?"

He hesitated.

"Whether you want to cooperate with the investigation."

The word investigation made my stomach twist.

"Daniel is being investigated?"

The detective glanced toward the hallway.

"Your husband has been contacted."

Emma immediately stood straighter.

"Is he here?"

"No."

"Then where is he?"

The detective didn't answer.

That worried me.

Because Daniel was never someone who disappeared without a reason.

He always had a plan.

Always.

I looked at Claire.

"What happened to Emily?"

Claire sat down slowly.

"I wish I knew."

Her voice broke.

"Daniel told me she was taken from a park."

I listened carefully.

"But the police never found evidence that a stranger took her."

The room felt colder.

"What did Daniel say?"

Claire looked at me.

"He said he searched everywhere."

"But?"

She swallowed.

"But I found something."

"What?"

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out another photograph.

This one was older.

It showed a house.

A small house.

Nothing special.

But something was written on the back.

An address.

I looked at her.

"Why are you showing me this?"

"Because that was the last place Daniel told me not to go."

My heart started racing.

"Why?"

Claire looked at the detective.

Then at me.

"Because he knew I would find something."

Emma stepped closer.

"What?"

Claire's hands trembled.

"The night Emily disappeared, Daniel changed his story three times."

The detective nodded.

"We reopened the case because of new information."

I looked at him.

"What information?"

He reached into the file.

"Your husband recently accessed an old storage account."

My eyebrows tightened.

"Why?"

"We don't know."

The detective placed another document on the bed.

A transaction record.

The date was two weeks earlier.

The amount was large.

But the name attached to it wasn't Daniel's.

It was mine.

My blood ran cold.

"What is this?"

The detective looked serious.

"Someone transferred money using an account connected to you."

I shook my head.

"Impossible."

Emma looked at the paper.

"Sarah, did you know about this?"

"No."

My voice became smaller.

"No, I didn't."

And then I remembered.

Daniel had asked me to sign documents after we got married.

He told me they were normal financial papers.

He told me every couple did it.

I signed them.

Because I trusted him.

The detective noticed my expression.

"What?"

I looked at him.

"Daniel handled all our finances."

The detective exchanged a glance with his partner.

That scared me.

"Mrs. Carter, did your husband ever ask you to sign documents without explaining them?"

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

My silence was enough.

Emma grabbed my hand.

"Sarah..."

I felt tears forming.

Not because I missed him.

Not anymore.

Because I was finally seeing him.

The real Daniel.

Not the man he pretended to be.

The doctor entered the room.

She looked surprised by the number of people inside.

"Is everything okay?"

Nobody answered.

She looked at me.

"Your infection treatment is working, but you need rest."

I nodded.

But rest felt impossible.

My entire life had been turned upside down in one night.

A husband I trusted.

A secret child.

A missing person case.

A hidden financial record.

And a stranger warning me not to trust the person I married.

After the detective left, Claire stayed.

She looked like she wanted to say something.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"There is something else."

I waited.

"I didn't come here only because of Daniel."

My heart sank.

"Then why?"

Claire reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a small envelope.

It was old.

The edges were damaged.

"My daughter wrote this before she disappeared."

My hands froze.

"Emily wrote that?"

Claire nodded.

"I found it after she was gone."

"Why didn't you give it to police?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Daniel found it first."

I stared at the envelope.

"What did it say?"

Claire looked at me.

"I don't know."

"What?"

"I never opened it."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel told me if I opened it, I would regret what I found."

The room went silent.

A seven-year-old girl's letter.

A missing child.

A warning from my husband's past.

My hands shook as Claire placed the envelope in front of me.

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

The handwriting was small.

Childlike.

Only one sentence was written.

"Mommy, Daniel is not the person you think he is."

I stopped breathing.

Emma covered her mouth.

Claire started crying.

Because she had waited seven years to see those words.

But underneath Emily's sentence was something else.

Something written much later.

Different handwriting.

Adult handwriting.

Daniel's handwriting.

Four words.

"She knows too much."

I stared at the page.

My entire body went cold.

Because Daniel wasn't just hiding the truth.

He was afraid of someone finding it.

And before anyone could speak, my hospital room phone rang.

The number on the screen was blocked.

I answered slowly.

Nobody said anything.

May you like

Then a familiar voice whispered:

"Sarah... you need to leave the hospital before Daniel gets there."
