Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Knew My Husband's Secret

"Sarah..."
The voice came from the hospital hallway.
When I looked up, I saw a woman standing outside my room holding an old brown envelope.
She walked toward me and revealed a photograph hidden inside.
On the back of the photo, only four words were written:
"She was never alone."
I immediately knew my life had been built on a lie.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The woman stood beside the door.
Dr. Morgan looked at her carefully.
Emma looked confused.
And I couldn't take my eyes away from the envelope in her hands.
"Who are you?"
My voice sounded weaker than I wanted.
The woman looked at me.
She looked older than me, maybe in her late forties.
Her brown hair was pulled back.
Her face showed exhaustion.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Something worse.
Regret.
"My name is Claire Wilson."
The name meant nothing to me.
I had never heard it before.
But the way she looked at me made me feel like she knew everything about me.
"I knew your husband before you did."
My stomach tightened.
Emma immediately stepped forward.
"Excuse me?"
Claire didn't look away from me.
"I know this is confusing."
"Confusing?" Emma said.
"My sister almost died because her husband refused to get her medical help, and now a stranger walks in saying she knows him?"
Claire lowered her eyes.
"I understand why you don't trust me."
Then she looked at the paper in my hand.
"But I think you need to know why Daniel was so desperate to keep you away from certain information."
I looked down at the handwritten note.
The note that had my name on it.
The note that said Daniel failed to keep me away from the truth.
"Did you write this?"
I asked.
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"Then how do you know about it?"
She slowly opened the envelope.
"I was the one who gave him the reason to hide it."
The room became silent.
I felt a strange pressure in my chest.
"Who are you to him?"
Claire looked at the floor.
"For a long time, I was someone Daniel wanted everyone to forget."
I stared at her.
"His ex-wife?"
She shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
Then she said:
"His first wife."
I felt the room tilt.
Emma looked at me.
"Sarah..."
I couldn't speak.
First wife.
Those words didn't make sense.
Daniel had told me he had never been married before.
He told me I was his first serious relationship.
He told me he had no secrets.
I looked at Claire.
"That's impossible."
She nodded slowly.
"I know."
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
"Daniel told me he was never married."
"He told everyone that."
The answer came quietly.
Like she had been carrying those words for years.
"Why?"
Claire looked at the hospital floor.
"Because the truth would destroy the life he built."
I felt anger replacing confusion.
"Why should I believe you?"
Claire reached into the envelope.
She pulled out a photograph.
She placed it on my bed.
I looked down.
My breathing stopped.
It was Daniel.
Younger.
Maybe ten years earlier.
Standing beside Claire.
But they weren't alone.
There was a little girl between them.
A child.
Maybe five years old.
My eyes moved to the back of the photograph.
Four words were written there.
"She was never alone."
I looked up.
"Who is she?"
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"My daughter."
The room went quiet again.
I stared at the photo.
Daniel had a child.
A daughter.
A whole part of his life I never knew existed.
Emma picked up the photo carefully.
"Sarah..."
I couldn't hear anything else.
Because suddenly every strange moment in my marriage started connecting.
The secret phone calls.
The hidden bank accounts.
The way Daniel hated unexpected visitors.
The way he controlled every detail.
He wasn't just hiding my freedom.
He was hiding his past.
"Where is she now?"
I asked.
Claire looked at me.
"That's the problem."
My heart sank.
"What do you mean?"
"Daniel told me she was gone."
The words felt heavy.
"She disappeared seven years ago."
I stared at her.
"What happened?"
Claire sat down slowly.
"Daniel said it was an accident."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"But you don't believe him."
She looked at me.
"No."
The room became colder.
"Why?"
Claire looked at Dr. Morgan.
Then at Emma.
Then finally at me.
"Because the night my daughter disappeared, Daniel was the last person who saw her."
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the photo again.
The little girl smiled at the camera.
Completely unaware.
I felt sick.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
Claire took a deep breath.
"Because when I saw the news about you being brought here, I knew he had started again."
"Started what?"
She didn't answer immediately.
That frightened me.
"Controlling the story."
I looked away.
Because I understood exactly what she meant.
Daniel had already done it.
He had told the paramedics he was worried.
He had acted like a loving husband.
He had made himself look like the victim.
"He always does this," Claire continued.
"He changes what happened until everyone believes him."
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
Again.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
A message appeared.
"Don't trust Claire."
I froze.
Emma saw my face.
"What happened?"
I showed her.
Her eyes narrowed.
"Who keeps sending these?"
Claire stood up immediately.
"Daniel."
I looked at her.
"How do you know?"
"Because he did the same thing to me."
My heart raced.
"What?"
Claire stepped closer.
"When I tried to tell people what happened to my daughter, Daniel made everyone think I was unstable."
I looked at Dr. Morgan.
She had been silent the entire time.
"Doctor?"
She looked uncomfortable.
"I need to tell you something."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
She opened the medical file again.
"There was another document attached to your records when you arrived."
I stared at her.
"What document?"
She hesitated.
"A police report."
The room went silent.
"A police report about what?"
Dr. Morgan looked at me.
"About Daniel Carter."
I felt my hands go cold.
"What does it say?"
She slowly pulled out a folded paper.
Before she could hand it to me, the hospital hallway suddenly filled with footsteps.
Fast.
Urgent.
Someone was running.
Then the door opened.
A police officer stood there.
Holding a file.
He looked directly at me.
"Mrs. Carter?"
I nodded.
The officer took a breath.
"We need to talk about what happened seven years ago."
May you like
Then he opened the file.
And the first page had a picture of a missing little girl with Daniel's name written underneath...
