Chapter 6 - The Room Daniel Never Wanted Me to Find

"Sarah, listen carefully."

The voice on the phone whispered through the hospital room.

When I recognized the voice, I dropped the phone onto the blanket.

It was Daniel.

But he wasn't calling to apologize.

He was warning me.

And that was when I realized something was worse than his lies.

He was afraid.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The phone remained on my blanket.

Emma stared at it.

Claire stared at me.

Even Dr. Morgan, who had just entered the room, stopped walking.

"Who was that?"

I looked at the screen.

Blocked number.

My hands felt cold.

"It was him."

Emma's expression changed immediately.

"Daniel?"

I nodded.

Claire stepped closer.

"What did he say?"

I swallowed.

"He told me to leave the hospital."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

The person who had spent the last few hours trying to control the situation was now scared enough to warn me.

Dr. Morgan closed the door.

"Sarah, do you feel safe here?"

I looked around the room.

For the first time, I noticed how many people were watching me.

The detective.

The doctor.

Emma.

Claire.

People who barely knew me.

People who had seen the truth before I was ready to see it.

"No," I whispered.

Dr. Morgan nodded.

"Then we need to take precautions."

I looked at her.

"Why would Daniel come here?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Detective Reynolds returned.

His face was serious.

"What happened?"

Emma pointed toward the phone.

"He called her."

The detective looked at me.

"What did he say?"

I repeated the warning.

The detective's expression changed.

"That's not a good sign."

"What does that mean?"

He looked at the file in his hand.

"It means Daniel knows we found something."

My heart sank.

"What?"

The detective opened the file.

"We searched the financial records connected to your account."

I already knew I wouldn't like what came next.

"What did you find?"

"A storage unit."

I frowned.

"A storage unit?"

He nodded.

"Registered under your name."

My mouth opened.

"No."

"Sarah."

"I don't have a storage unit."

The detective looked at me carefully.

"That's why it's concerning."

Emma sat beside me.

"What is inside?"

The detective hesitated.

"We don't know yet."

"Then why does it matter?"

"Because it was rented three years ago."

The room went silent.

Three years.

I looked at Claire.

She looked back at me.

Three years ago was when she said Emily disappeared.

I felt a wave of nausea.

"Daniel rented it?"

The detective shook his head.

"No."

My heart stopped.

"Then who?"

He looked down.

"Your name was used."

I closed my eyes.

I remembered the papers.

The documents.

The signatures.

The things Daniel told me were normal.

"How could he do that?"

Emma grabbed my hand.

"Because he knew you trusted him."

The words hurt because they were true.

I had spent years believing trust meant letting someone handle everything.

I thought marriage meant sharing every decision.

I never imagined it could become a way for someone to hide things from me.

The detective continued.

"We have officers checking the storage unit now."

"Can I go?"

Everyone looked at me.

"Sarah, you're still recovering."

"I need to know."

The detective understood.

But before he could answer, my phone vibrated again.

Another message.

This time from the unknown number.

I opened it.

"Don't go to the storage unit."

My breathing stopped.

Then another message appeared.

"Daniel wants you to find what he left there."

Emma read it.

"What does that mean?"

I looked at Claire.

Her face had changed.

"Sarah..."

"What?"

She looked terrified.

"Daniel always did this."

"Did what?"

"He never destroyed evidence."

I frowned.

"What?"

"He hid it."

The room became silent.

"Why?"

Claire looked at me.

"Because Daniel liked having control over the truth."

The detective immediately stood.

"Where is the storage unit?"

He looked at the documents.

"Warehouse district."

My stomach tightened.

That area sounded familiar.

Then I remembered.

Daniel had taken me there once.

Years ago.

I thought it was for business.

He told me he was meeting a client.

But he came back nervous.

I had asked him what happened.

He kissed my forehead and told me:

"Some things are better left forgotten."

At the time, I believed him.

Now those words felt different.

An hour later, I was moved to a private waiting area while police prepared to check the storage unit.

I couldn't rest.

I couldn't close my eyes.

Every memory I had of Daniel was changing.

Every moment had another meaning.

The first anniversary dinner.

The hidden phone calls.

The financial documents.

The way he always knew where I was.

I thought it was love.

It was surveillance.

The detective came back.

His face told me something was wrong.

"What happened?"

He placed a small plastic bag on the table.

Inside was a key.

An old metal key.

My name was written on a small tag attached to it.

I stared.

"Where did you find that?"

"Inside the storage unit."

My heart raced.

"What else?"

The detective looked at Claire.

Then at me.

"We haven't opened everything yet."

"Why?"

He was quiet.

Then he said:

"Because the first thing we found was a box with Emily Wilson's name on it."

Claire covered her mouth.

"No."

The detective nodded.

"But that's not the worst part."

I felt a chill.

"What is?"

He looked at me.

"Your signature was on the box."

I couldn't speak.

That was impossible.

I had never met Emily.

I had never seen that box.

I had never written her name.

But somehow, my signature was there.

The detective continued.

"We need you to tell us if you've ever been to that storage unit."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

My voice became stronger.

"I would remember something like that."

The detective nodded.

"Then we need to figure out why someone wanted it to look like you were involved."

I looked at the key again.

A thought appeared.

A terrifying thought.

Daniel didn't just hide things from me.

He might have been preparing to blame me.

That night, I barely slept.

Around midnight, Emma was resting in the chair beside my bed.

Claire had gone home with police protection.

The hospital hallway was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then my phone lit up.

Unknown number.

One new message.

I opened it.

There was a picture.

A picture of my apartment.

Taken from inside.

My blood froze.

Someone had been there.

Under the picture was one sentence.

"You're looking in the wrong place."

Before I could process it, another message arrived.

This one had an attachment.

A video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my living room.

The camera angle was impossible.

It was hidden.

Then I saw Daniel walk into the room.

He was carrying a box.

A box I recognized.

The same box from the storage unit.

He placed it on the table.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

Like he knew someone was watching.

Like he knew it would eventually reach me.

And then Daniel said four words that made my entire body go cold.

"She finally remembers everything."

The video ended.

At that exact moment, the hospital room door slowly opened...

And Daniel Carter was standing there.
