Chapter 8 - The Woman Outside The House

The photograph was still on my phone.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

Sarah Reed.

Standing outside my house.

Not years ago.

Not in some old family album.

Today.

The same house where we were standing.

The same place where every secret had started falling apart.

My hands felt cold.

"Claire?"

Daniel's voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

Michael.

Evelyn.

Robert.

All of them waiting for me to say something.

But I didn't know what to say.

Because the woman in the photograph was supposed to be dead.

Or at least...

that's what I had believed my entire life.

"She's alive."

My voice barely came out.

Michael immediately stepped closer.

"Who?"

I showed him the phone.

The moment he saw the picture, his expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"You know her."

It wasn't a question.

Michael looked away.

And that was when I understood.

"You know her."

He didn't answer.

"Michael."

He looked at me.

His face was full of regret.

"I've seen her."

My heart dropped.

"When?"

He hesitated.

"Before I came here."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Where?"

Michael looked at him.

"She contacted me."

The room went silent.

Evelyn suddenly stood.

"What did you say?"

Michael looked at her.

"You heard me."

Evelyn's face became pale.

"She contacted you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Michael gave a bitter smile.

"Because she knew I was looking for answers."

Daniel looked between them.

"Someone explain what is happening."

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael finally said:

"Sarah wasn't the victim everyone thought she was."

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

He looked at the photograph.

"It means the story your family told you was incomplete."

I shook my head.

"My mother died."

Michael looked at me.

"No."

The word was quiet.

But it hurt.

"She disappeared."

I stared at him.

"There is a difference."

I couldn't breathe.

Because all my life I had carried one memory.

One painful memory.

My mother dying when I was eighteen.

The hospital room.

The machines.

Her hand holding mine.

Her final words.

I love you.

But now...

what if even that was not true?

"What happened to my mother?"

Nobody answered.

Evelyn looked at the floor.

And finally, she spoke.

"Sarah wanted to leave."

I turned toward her.

"You knew her?"

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"How?"

She swallowed.

"Because I helped her."

Daniel looked shocked.

"Mom..."

Evelyn continued.

"Years ago, before you met Claire, before this house, before everything..."

She looked at me.

"Sarah came to me."

"Why?"

"Because she was afraid."

The word repeated in my mind.

Afraid.

Everyone kept using that word.

Afraid.

Protected.

Hidden.

Secrets.

But nobody told me what the danger was.

"Afraid of who?"

Evelyn looked at the basement door.

Like she was afraid someone might hear.

"Your father."

I froze.

"My father?"

She nodded.

"Thomas Reed."

I looked at Robert.

Then Michael.

Then back at Evelyn.

"You all knew him."

Nobody denied it.

Daniel looked angry.

"How much more have you hidden?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

"My whole life."

His voice cracked.

"My whole life you let me believe things that weren't true."

"I was trying to protect you."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"You were trying to control what I knew."

That sentence hurt Evelyn.

I saw it.

But I also knew Daniel was right.

Secrets might start as protection.

But they still become lies.

Robert opened another folder.

"I think it's time everyone sees the complete record."

Nobody moved.

He placed several documents on the table.

"Thomas Reed was involved in a business dispute before his death."

Michael frowned.

"What kind of dispute?"

Robert looked at him.

"A dispute involving money."

Daniel looked confused.

"My father wasn't rich."

Robert nodded.

"Not publicly."

He opened another document.

"He had another account."

I looked closer.

A bank record.

A name.

A number.

Millions of dollars.

My stomach tightened.

"Where did that money come from?"

Robert looked at me.

"That is the question nobody answered."

Michael picked up the document.

"Thomas was hiding money?"

"No."

Robert shook his head.

"He was protecting it."

Daniel looked at him.

"From who?"

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"From the person who wanted it."

The basement became quiet.

"Who?"

Robert looked at Evelyn.

Everyone followed his eyes.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"His business partner."

Michael's face changed.

"Who?"

Evelyn whispered:

"Richard Vale."

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to everyone else.

Michael immediately stepped back.

Daniel noticed.

"Who is Richard Vale?"

Michael looked disturbed.

"He's the reason your father disappeared."

I looked at Michael.

"You know him?"

He nodded.

"Everyone in my father's world knew him."

Robert continued.

"Richard Vale wasn't just a business partner."

He paused.

"He was family."

Nobody spoke.

Then I felt my phone vibrate.

Another message.

Same unknown number.

I looked down.

A new photograph appeared.

My hands froze.

Because this time...

it wasn't Sarah outside my house.

It was my mother.

A younger version of her.

Standing beside Richard Vale.

And beside them...

was Thomas Reed.

But there was one more person in the picture.

A little girl.

A child.

Holding my mother's hand.

I stared at the image.

Because I knew that child.

I had seen that face before.

In my own childhood photographs.

My breathing stopped.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

"Claire..."

I couldn't answer.

Because underneath the photo was one sentence.

One sentence that changed everything.

"Ask Evelyn why she raised someone else's daughter."

I slowly looked toward Evelyn.

May you like

And she was already crying.

Because she knew the message was true.
