Chapter 5 - The Stranger Inside Our House

The sound of the front door locking echoed through the house.

Nobody moved.

For a moment, we all stood frozen in the basement.

It was such a small sound.

A simple click.

But everyone understood what it meant.

Someone was upstairs.

Someone who didn't want us leaving.

Daniel looked at Michael.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at me.

"Who is it?"

Nobody answered.

That was the worst part.

Because I had spent the last hour watching secrets unfold one after another.

First, Evelyn's hidden suitcase.

Then Michael.

Then my father's name.

And now...

someone was inside our home.

Michael stepped toward the stairs.

Daniel immediately grabbed his arm.

"Wait."

Michael looked at him.

"What?"

"We don't know who that is."

Michael gave a small, bitter smile.

"Neither of us know anything anymore."

Daniel released his arm.

But he stayed close.

I could feel how scared he was.

Not the kind of fear that came from danger.

The kind that came from realizing your entire life had been built on things you never knew.

Evelyn walked toward us.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"You need to listen to me."

Daniel turned around.

"Now you want us to listen?"

"I know how this looks."

"No, Mom."

His voice cracked.

"You don't know how this feels."

Evelyn stopped.

Daniel looked at her.

"I spent my entire life believing I knew my family."

He pointed toward Michael.

"I didn't know I had a brother."

Then he looked at me.

"I didn't know my wife's family was connected to yours."

His eyes filled with anger.

"And apparently, I didn't know my own mother."

Evelyn looked away.

The pain on her face was real.

But it didn't erase anything.

A noise came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Someone walking.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Michael immediately became alert.

"Everyone quiet."

We turned off the basement light.

The darkness returned.

I stood beside Daniel.

His hand found mine.

Not because he was comforting me.

Because he needed someone to hold onto.

The footsteps moved across the living room.

Then stopped.

Right above us.

The basement was silent.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

Then...

a voice.

"Claire?"

My blood went cold.

Because the person upstairs knew my name.

Daniel looked at me.

I shook my head.

"I don't know who that is."

The voice came again.

"Claire, I know you're down there."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Michael looked at her.

"You know him."

It wasn't a question.

It was an accusation.

Evelyn didn't answer.

Michael stepped closer.

"Who is it?"

Her eyes filled with fear.

"I don't know."

Michael stared at her.

"Don't lie."

The footsteps moved again.

Closer to the basement door.

Daniel whispered:

"Mom."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Tell us the truth."

She looked like she wanted to speak.

But she couldn't.

Then the basement door handle moved.

Slowly.

Everyone froze.

The handle turned.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came from the other side.

A man's voice.

Older.

Calm.

"Daniel."

Daniel stepped back.

Because he recognized it.

I saw it on his face.

"Who is that?"

He didn't answer.

The door opened slightly.

Just enough for someone to look inside.

Then a hand appeared.

Holding a photograph.

The photograph slipped through the opening.

And fell onto the floor.

Nobody moved.

Michael picked it up.

His face changed.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

Daniel took the photograph from him.

The moment he saw it, he went completely still.

I looked over his shoulder.

And my stomach dropped.

It was a photograph of four people.

A younger Evelyn.

Daniel's father.

Michael.

And my father.

Standing together.

Years before I was born.

On the back of the photograph were five words.

The same handwriting from the old documents.

"She knows what happened."

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

That was when I knew.

She had not been hiding one secret.

She had been hiding an entire story.

Daniel walked toward the door.

"Who are you?"

Silence.

Then the person outside answered.

"I was the one who warned your mother."

Daniel looked confused.

"Warned her about what?"

The voice became colder.

"About the night your father disappeared."

Nobody spoke.

Michael stepped forward.

"Disappeared?"

The man outside laughed quietly.

"Yes."

Michael's expression changed.

"That's impossible."

"No."

The voice replied.

"What's impossible is what Evelyn made everyone believe."

Evelyn suddenly shouted.

"Stop!"

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying now.

Not pretending.

Not hiding.

Actually crying.

"Please."

Her voice shook.

"Don't do this."

Daniel looked at her.

"Do what?"

She looked at the closed door.

Then at Michael.

Then at me.

"Bring the past back."

Michael's expression hardened.

"The past never left."

The person outside spoke again.

"Daniel."

Daniel moved closer.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"The person who knows why your father really died."

The basement went silent.

Daniel's face changed.

Because all his life, he believed his father died in an accident.

A simple tragedy.

Something nobody could change.

But now...

everything was different.

"Open the door."

Daniel said.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

She couldn't answer.

And that answer was enough.

Daniel pulled away.

He reached for the handle.

The man outside spoke one final time.

"Before you open this door, you should know something."

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

A long silence followed.

Then the voice said:

"Your father didn't leave behind one child."

Michael looked at Daniel.

I looked at Evelyn.

And Daniel slowly turned around.

Because everyone in that basement understood the same thing.

There was another secret.

Another person.

Another piece of the family nobody knew existed.

May you like

Daniel opened the basement door.

And the man standing outside was holding a birth certificate with his name on it.
