Chapter 11 - The Box Beneath The Floor

The photograph stayed on my phone screen.
Richard Vale.
Standing outside my childhood home.
The house I hadn't visited in years.
The house where my father died.
The house where I thought my childhood ended.
But now...
someone was waiting there.
Daniel looked at me.
"We're not going."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He took my phone.
"Claire, whoever sent this message wants you to go there."
Michael nodded.
"He's right."
Daniel looked at him.
"Richard knows we're close."
Michael stared at the photograph.
"He wants us to come."
Evelyn was standing near the window.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
I turned toward her.
"You knew this would happen."
Her face changed.
"No."
"Yes."
My voice shook.
"You knew the moment you saw Richard's name."
She didn't answer.
And once again...
silence became the truth.
Daniel looked at his mother.
"Mom."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"I thought he was gone."
"Who?"
"Richard."
She whispered the name like it still carried danger.
"I thought after all these years, he finally stopped looking."
Michael stepped closer.
"But he didn't."
Evelyn looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"He was waiting."
The room became colder.
I looked at Daniel.
"We have to go."
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
"I need answers."
"And I need you alive."
Those words stopped me.
Because Daniel wasn't thinking about the secrets anymore.
He was thinking about me.
For the first time that day, something felt certain.
No matter how many lies surrounded us...
Daniel was still on my side.
Michael grabbed his coat.
"I'm coming."
Evelyn looked at him.
"Michael."
"I spent thirty years looking for the truth."
He looked at the photograph.
"I'm not stopping now."
Robert appeared at the doorway.
Everyone turned.
I forgot he was gone.
He looked different.
Tired.
Like whatever he had discovered downstairs had changed him too.
"You can't go there."
Daniel looked at him.
"Why?"
Robert hesitated.
Then he said:
"Because Richard knows what you are looking for."
Michael frowned.
"And?"
Robert looked at me.
"And because he knows Claire is the key."
My stomach tightened.
"What key?"
Robert didn't answer.
He walked toward the table.
Then he placed a small object down.
A key.
Old.
Silver.
Scratched.
I stared at it.
"Where did you get that?"
Robert looked at Evelyn.
"She gave it to me years ago."
I looked at Evelyn.
"You had this?"
She nodded.
"It belonged to Thomas."
My heart started beating faster.
"What does it open?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Robert said:
"The box."
I froze.
The box.
The one from my childhood.
The one my father gave me.
The one I thought I lost.
Daniel looked at me.
"You remember where it is?"
I nodded slowly.
"Under the floor."
Everyone stared.
"What?"
I swallowed.
"My father hid something under the floorboard in my bedroom."
Michael stepped closer.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
I looked at him.
"Because I was eight years old."
Nobody spoke.
I remembered the night.
My father sitting beside my bed.
His face serious.
His voice quiet.
He told me:
"Some things are too important to lose."
At the time, I thought it was just a game.
A secret treasure.
I never understood.
I never knew.
But now...
I did.
We left within twenty minutes.
Nobody called the police.
Nobody trusted anyone outside the group.
Not after everything.
The drive to my childhood home felt unreal.
Every street looked familiar.
But every memory felt different.
Like someone had taken my past and rewritten it.
When we arrived, the house looked exactly the same.
Older.
Empty.
Forgotten.
But not abandoned.
The front gate was open.
Daniel noticed.
"Someone was here."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
Evelyn stayed in the car.
I looked at her.
"You aren't coming?"
She looked at the house.
Fear crossed her face.
"I can't."
"Why?"
She whispered:
"Because the last time I entered that house..."
She stopped.
"The last time?"
She looked away.
"I saw something I was never supposed to see."
Before I could ask, Michael opened the door.
"We don't have time."
I walked toward the house.
The front door was unlocked.
That alone made my chest tighten.
Because my father was careful.
He locked everything.
Always.
Daniel stayed beside me.
"You don't have to do this."
I looked at him.
"Yes, I do."
Inside, everything felt frozen.
The old furniture.
The photographs.
The smell.
For a moment, I wasn't thirty years old.
I was a little girl again.
Walking through the hallway.
Waiting for my father to come home.
I went upstairs.
To my old bedroom.
The room was empty.
Except for one thing.
A chair.
Placed in the middle of the room.
Facing the floor.
Daniel looked around.
"This wasn't here before."
I shook my head.
"No."
Michael walked closer.
There was something attached to the chair.
A note.
I picked it up.
Only one sentence.
"You were always going to come back."
I dropped it.
Daniel looked at me.
"Richard."
I nodded.
He had been here.
Waiting.
Michael searched the room.
Then he stopped.
"Claire."
I looked at him.
He pointed toward the floor.
One floorboard was different.
The old hiding place.
My heart started racing.
I knelt down.
My hands shook as I touched the wood.
The memories returned.
My father.
The box.
The promise.
I removed the floorboard.
Underneath was a small empty space.
But the box was gone.
I froze.
"No."
Daniel knelt beside me.
"What?"
"It's not here."
Michael looked around.
"He took it."
I stared at the empty space.
But then I noticed something.
A small mark.
Carved into the wood.
A symbol.
I had seen it before.
On the old documents.
On my father's papers.
On the photographs.
A circle.
With a line through the middle.
My father's symbol.
I touched it.
And the wood moved.
A hidden compartment opened beneath the floor.
Inside was not the box.
It was a single envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not Claire.
The other name.
The name I was born with.
Lily.
I couldn't move.
Daniel saw it.
"Claire..."
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Only one page.
The first line made my hands go numb.
My daughter Lily, if you are reading this, then Sarah failed to keep you hidden.
I looked up.
Because there was one thing I knew.
Sarah wasn't the only person who had been hiding.
Someone else had been protecting me.
And then I heard footsteps downstairs.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone had entered the house.
Michael turned toward the door.
Daniel stood.
The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom.
Then a voice spoke.
A voice I had only heard once before.
"Claire."
The door handle slowly turned.
May you like
And on the other side of the door...
stood my real mother.
