Chapter 6 - The Room Behind Ruby’s Wall

The sound from upstairs stopped.
No footsteps.
No movement.
Nothing.
That silence was worse than any noise.
Because everyone in the room knew someone had been inside Ruby’s room.
And whoever it was had left before we reached them.
I looked at my father.
He was still standing near the kitchen table, staring toward the stairs.
For the first time in my life, I saw him look powerless.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Powerless.
"How long has that room been locked?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at my mother.
She wiped her tears away.
"Mom."
She looked at me.
"How long?"
Her lips moved slightly.
"Since you left for your last deployment."
I felt my chest tighten.
Ruby’s room.
The room where my daughter slept.
The room my parents had helped prepare before she was born.
A room they had locked.
For years.
"Why?"
My mother looked down.
"Because Daniel told us to."
That name again.
Daniel.
The man who disappeared.
The man who had tried to protect my daughter.
The man everyone had lied about.
I walked toward the stairs.
My father moved quickly.
"Emma, wait."
I stopped.
Not because he told me to.
Because I wanted to hear what excuse he had left.
"Why?"
He swallowed.
"Because you don't understand what you're about to find."
I turned around.
"You're right."
My voice was quiet.
"I don't understand."
I pointed toward the stairs.
"Because I spent years believing my family loved me."
Nobody spoke.
"I believed when I left Ruby here, she was surrounded by people who would protect her."
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
"But the person who hurt her was sitting at this table."
Vanessa looked away.
"And the people who knew about it were standing around pretending nothing happened."
My father lowered his head.
I walked upstairs.
Rebecca followed me.
Michael stayed behind for a moment.
Then he joined us.
The hallway looked exactly the same as I remembered.
Family photos.
Old paintings.
Memories of a family that no longer felt real.
I stopped in front of Ruby’s door.
A small wooden sign still hung there.
"Ruby's Room."
The letters were faded.
But the lock was new.
Someone had recently replaced it.
Rebecca noticed too.
"This wasn't locked for years."
I touched the handle.
Fresh scratches surrounded the keyhole.
Someone had opened it recently.
Someone had been coming in and out.
I looked at Michael.
"Was it you?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"Daniel?"
Michael looked away.
"Daniel never wanted anyone opening that door."
My hand tightened around the handle.
"Why?"
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
I opened the door.
The room looked like a child’s bedroom.
A small bed.
Stuffed animals.
Books.
A night light.
But something felt wrong.
It was too perfect.
Like someone had recreated a memory.
Not a room where a child lived.
A room someone wanted people to believe was untouched.
I stepped inside.
Ruby's old drawings covered one wall.
Pictures of our family.
Me.
Her.
Her grandparents.
And Vanessa.
But one drawing caught my attention.
It was hidden behind the others.
A picture of a kitchen.
A little girl sitting at a table.
A woman standing behind her.
And another person near the door.
I picked it up.
At the bottom, Ruby had written something.
Not with her normal handwriting.
Like she had written it while scared.
"Mommy, he was there."
I felt cold.
Rebecca looked over my shoulder.
"Who was there?"
I didn't answer.
Because I already knew.
The man from the security footage.
I turned the drawing over.
There was another sentence.
"He told Aunt Vanessa to do it."
My breathing stopped.
Michael stepped closer.
"Emma."
I looked at him.
"Daniel knew."
He nodded.
"He found this."
"Then why didn't he show me?"
Michael looked at the floor.
"Because he tried."
That answer made me freeze.
"What?"
Michael reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old phone.
The screen was cracked.
"This belonged to Daniel."
Rebecca immediately became alert.
"You still had his phone?"
Michael nodded.
"He gave it to me before he disappeared."
I stared at the device.
"Why?"
"Because he knew someone would try to erase everything."
Michael turned it on.
The phone was almost dead.
But one file appeared.
A video.
Created three days before Daniel vanished.
I pressed play.
Daniel appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
Scared.
But alive.
My entire body went still.
"Emma."
Hearing my name from someone I had never met before but had spent days searching for felt impossible.
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, it means I failed."
My throat tightened.
The video continued.
"I tried to tell you the truth about Vanessa."
A pause.
Then he looked away.
"But she wasn't the only one."
Everyone became silent.
Daniel continued:
"Your parents knew."
My heart sank.
"They knew Vanessa was dangerous. They knew what she had done before. They knew what she was capable of."
I stopped breathing.
"What she had done before?"
Rebecca looked at me.
Daniel's voice continued.
"They protected her because they were afraid of what would happen if the truth came out."
The screen flickered.
Then Daniel said something that changed everything.
"The night Ruby was hurt wasn't the first time Vanessa tried to hurt someone."
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
My mind was racing.
There was more.
Something bigger than I imagined.
I looked at Michael.
"What happened before Ruby?"
He didn't answer.
"Michael."
He closed his eyes.
"Daniel found another child."
The room became silent.
"What child?"
Michael looked toward the closet.
Then toward the wall behind Ruby's bed.
"The reason this room was locked."
I followed his eyes.
There was a small section of the wall that looked slightly different.
A newer piece of wood.
A hidden panel.
My heart started beating faster.
Rebecca noticed it too.
"Emma..."
I walked toward the wall.
I touched the edge.
It moved slightly.
Someone had hidden something inside.
Behind me, Michael whispered:
"Daniel said if anything happened to him, you were the only person who could open it."
I looked at the hidden panel.
My fingers reached for the small opening.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"Don't open the wall."
I stared at the screen.
A second message arrived.
"He didn't hide evidence inside."
My hand stopped.
May you like
The third message appeared.
"He hid someone."
