Chapter 3 - The Secret My Mother Buried For Years

My mother locked the kitchen door.

The sound of the deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody questioned why she did it.

And that was the moment I understood.

Everyone in that kitchen knew something.

Something they had spent years hiding from me.

I stared at my mother.

The woman who had held my hand when I was a child.

The woman who cried when I left for military training.

The woman who told me family always protected each other.

Now she stood between me and the truth.

"Mom," I said quietly. "Why did you lock the door?"

Her eyes moved toward Ruby.

Then toward Vanessa.

Then back to me.

It was the same look she had given me when I was young and asked questions she did not want to answer.

A look that said:

Stop asking.

But I was not that girl anymore.

I walked toward the table and placed the photograph down.

The image was clear.

The kitchen.

The same kitchen where Ruby had been hurt.

The same kitchen where everyone claimed they saw nothing.

But someone had been there.

Someone standing behind Vanessa.

Someone whose face was partially hidden.

Rebecca stepped closer.

"I received this photo anonymously yesterday."

My father immediately turned toward her.

"Yesterday?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Someone wanted Emma to see this."

My eyes stayed on the picture.

"Who is that person?"

Nobody answered.

The silence became the answer.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Emma, you are making this into something it isn't."

I looked at her.

"You said nobody else was in the kitchen."

"I said nobody important was there."

The moment those words left her mouth, she froze.

Everyone froze.

Because she had just admitted something.

Someone had been there.

Someone she considered unimportant.

But important enough to hide.

Rebecca slowly picked up the photograph.

"Vanessa, maybe you should explain why your statement from that night says you were alone with Ruby."

Vanessa’s face changed.

She looked toward my father.

Not me.

Not my mother.

My father.

That small movement told me more than any confession.

My family had been protecting Vanessa.

But someone had been protecting my family too.

And I needed to know why.

I took a deep breath.

"Start talking."

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

That was when my father became nervous.

Because he knew that tone.

Everyone in the military knew that tone.

It was the moment before a decision was made.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"You think wearing that uniform makes you better than everyone?"

I looked at her.

"No."

I glanced at Ruby.

"It reminds me that I have a responsibility."

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"You always do this. You act like you're the only person who cares."

I stepped closer.

"No, Vanessa."

I pointed toward Ruby.

"I act like I'm the only person who protected her."

The room went silent.

Ruby held my hand tighter.

Her small fingers were shaking.

I immediately lowered myself beside her.

"Sweetheart, why don't you go with Mrs. Hayes for a minute?"

Ruby looked worried.

"Are you going to leave me?"

My heart broke.

"No."

I touched her hair.

"Never."

Rebecca gently took Ruby to the other side of the room.

Once Ruby was away, I turned back.

"Now tell me about the person in the picture."

My mother sat down slowly.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying something heavy for years.

"Emma..."

I waited.

She wiped her eyes.

"His name was Daniel."

The room changed.

Vanessa looked down.

My father closed his eyes.

I noticed.

They all knew that name.

"Who is Daniel?"

My mother looked at me.

"He was someone your sister knew."

"Someone Vanessa knew?"

She nodded.

"But he was also someone who tried to warn us."

My eyebrows tightened.

"Warn you about what?"

My mother looked toward the locked door.

Then she whispered:

"About Vanessa."

Vanessa immediately stood up.

"Mom!"

But my mother did not stop.

For the first time that night, she looked at Vanessa with fear.

Not disappointment.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Daniel saw things."

"What things?"

My mother looked at the photograph.

"He saw how Vanessa treated Ruby."

My chest tightened.

"Then why didn't anyone tell me?"

Nobody answered.

I already knew.

Because they chose silence.

My father finally spoke.

"Because we thought we could handle it."

I turned toward him.

"You thought you could handle my daughter being hurt?"

His jaw tightened.

"No. We thought we could fix Vanessa."

I stared at him.

That sentence explained everything.

They were not unaware.

They were not confused.

They knew there was a problem.

And instead of protecting Ruby, they tried to repair Vanessa.

Like Ruby was the damage they could ignore.

Rebecca opened another file.

"There is something else."

I looked at her.

She pulled out several printed pages.

"These are messages between Daniel and your mother."

My mother immediately stood.

"No."

Rebecca looked at her.

"He wanted to come forward."

My mother’s face went pale.

"He said he was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

Rebecca placed the papers on the table.

I read the first message.

Daniel wrote:

"She knows how to make everyone believe her."

The next message:

"If anything happens to Ruby, people need to know I tried to stop it."

My hands became cold.

This was no longer about one incident.

This was planned.

Hidden.

Covered.

I looked at Vanessa.

For the first time, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Scared.

"Where is Daniel now?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at my mother.

"Mom."

Her lips trembled.

"He disappeared."

"When?"

"Two weeks before Ruby was hurt."

My stomach dropped.

Rebecca slowly opened another document.

"That's not all."

She placed a police report on the table.

The date was three days after Daniel disappeared.

I read the report.

Missing person.

Daniel Hayes.

Last known location:

My parents’ house.

I looked around the kitchen.

The same kitchen.

The same walls.

The same place where everyone claimed nothing happened.

Then my phone vibrated again.

Unknown number.

Another message.

I opened it.

"Emma, your family didn't hide what Vanessa did to Ruby."

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

"They hid what happened to Daniel."

My breathing stopped.

I looked toward the locked kitchen door.

Someone knocked from the other side.

Slowly.

Three times.

My father stood up.

His face lost all color.

Because he recognized the sound.

May you like

Then he whispered a name I had never heard before.

"Daniel..."
