Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

The knocking continued.
Three slow knocks.
Then silence.
Nobody in the kitchen moved.
My father was still staring at the locked door.
His face had changed completely.
The confident man who always had an explanation for everything was gone.
In his place was someone who looked like he had just seen a ghost.
I looked at him.
"Why did you say Daniel's name?"
He didn't answer.
My mother covered her mouth with both hands.
Vanessa stepped backward.
And that was when I knew.
The person outside was not a stranger.
Someone in my family knew exactly who was standing on the other side.
I walked toward the door.
My father immediately grabbed my arm.
"Don't."
I looked down at his hand.
Then at his face.
In all my years, my father had never looked afraid of anything.
Not when I joined the military.
Not when I left home.
Not when I made decisions he disagreed with.
But now he was afraid of a door.
"Let go of me."
His fingers slowly released.
I unlocked the door.
The entire room held its breath.
I pulled it open.
Nobody was there.
Only a small envelope sitting on the floor.
My name was written across the front.
Emma Carter.
No address.
No sender.
Just my name.
Rebecca stepped beside me.
"Don't touch it yet."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
She pointed.
There was a small mark on the corner of the envelope.
A symbol.
A symbol I recognized from the military.
Not an official military symbol.
Something else.
A warning.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had access.
I carefully picked up the envelope using a tissue from the table.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
"Your mother knows where Daniel is."
I looked up.
My eyes immediately went to my mother.
She started crying.
"Emma..."
I felt something inside me break.
Not because of the message.
Because she didn't deny it.
After everything.
After all the lies.
She still had something she wasn't telling me.
"Mom."
My voice was quieter than I expected.
"Where is Daniel?"
She sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
"I don't know."
I stared at her.
Everyone knew that answer wasn't true.
My mother looked at Ruby.
Then away.
"I knew where he was going."
"That's not the same thing."
She closed her eyes.
"He came to me after he found out what Vanessa had been doing."
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
"Mom, stop."
My mother looked at her.
And for the first time, there was no fear in her eyes.
Only regret.
"No."
Vanessa froze.
"I protected you for too long."
The room went silent.
I watched my sister's expression change.
Not anger.
Panic.
"What did Daniel find?"
I asked.
My mother looked at the table.
"Videos."
My heart dropped.
"Videos of what?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Rebecca moved closer.
"Mrs. Carter, if Daniel recorded evidence, why didn't he take it to the police?"
My mother whispered:
"Because Vanessa found out."
Everyone became still.
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
"No. No, this is insane."
I stepped toward her.
"Then explain."
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For years, Vanessa had always had words.
She knew exactly what to say.
She knew how to make people feel guilty.
How to turn herself into the victim.
But now she had no story.
Because everyone had started seeing the same thing.
The truth.
Rebecca opened her laptop.
"I recovered something from the photograph metadata."
My eyes moved toward her.
"The photo of the kitchen."
She turned the screen around.
"The picture wasn't taken by Daniel."
I frowned.
"Then who took it?"
She clicked another file.
A security camera recording appeared.
The date matched the night Ruby was hurt.
My entire body went cold.
I watched the footage.
The angle showed the kitchen.
Ruby was sitting at the table.
Vanessa was standing beside her.
But this time, there was something different.
Someone else entered the room.
A man.
He stood near the doorway.
Watching.
Not helping.
Not stopping anything.
Watching.
I leaned closer.
"Who is that?"
Rebecca zoomed in.
The man's face became clearer.
My father immediately stood up.
"Turn it off."
Everyone looked at him.
I slowly turned.
"Dad?"
He didn't answer.
"Why do you know who that is?"
His silence was enough.
Rebecca closed the laptop.
"Emma, there is something you need to understand."
I looked at her.
"This wasn't only about Vanessa."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
She looked toward my parents.
"It means someone else was involved."
I felt Ruby's hand grab mine.
I looked down at her.
She was watching everyone.
Children notice things adults think they hide.
Especially fear.
I knelt beside her.
"Ruby, sweetheart, do you remember the man in the kitchen?"
She looked uncertain.
Then slowly nodded.
My entire body froze.
"You saw him?"
She nodded again.
"What did he do?"
Ruby looked at Vanessa.
Then at my parents.
Then whispered:
"He told Aunt Vanessa that Grandma and Grandpa would fix everything."
The room went completely silent.
My mother began crying.
My father sat down heavily.
And Vanessa's face lost all color.
Because Ruby had just revealed something they never expected her to remember.
I stood up.
"Who was he?"
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my father.
Then my mother.
Then Vanessa.
"Who was the man in my parents' kitchen?"
My father looked at the floor.
"I never wanted you to know."
My heart started beating faster.
"Know what?"
He slowly raised his eyes.
And for the first time, my father looked at me like I was no longer his daughter.
Like I was someone who had finally discovered a secret he had spent years protecting.
"He was the reason Daniel disappeared."
Before I could respond, Rebecca's phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
"What?"
She answered.
Nobody heard the voice on the other end.
But we saw Rebecca's expression turn from confusion...
to fear.
She slowly stood.
Then whispered:
"Emma, you need to leave this house right now."
I looked toward the front door.
May you like
Because someone had just entered the hallway.
And they were calling my name.
