Chapter 5 - The Person Who Knew Everything About My Daughter

Someone was calling my name from the hallway.
"Emma."
The voice was calm.
Too calm.
Everyone in the kitchen froze.
My mother stopped crying.
My father stood up slowly.
Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.
I had spent years in situations where danger was obvious.
A loud noise.
A sudden movement.
A warning from a soldier beside me.
But this was different.
This was my own family’s house.
The place where I had grown up.
The place where I thought my daughter would be safe.
And now every person inside was afraid of whoever was standing outside.
Rebecca moved closer to me.
"Don't answer."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
She glanced at my parents.
"Because they know who it is."
My eyes moved toward my father.
He looked away.
That was all I needed.
I walked toward the hallway.
My mother grabbed my sleeve.
"Emma, please."
I turned.
"Please what?"
Her lips trembled.
"Please don't make this worse."
I stared at her.
The same words.
Again.
Always the same words.
Don't make things worse.
Don't embarrass the family.
Don't ask questions.
Don't expose the truth.
But nobody ever said:
Don't hurt Ruby.
I gently removed her hand.
"I think it already got worse when everyone decided to protect the wrong person."
I stepped into the hallway.
The lights above me flickered.
At the end of the hallway stood a man.
Older.
Around his late fifties.
Gray hair.
A tired face.
He looked like someone who had spent years carrying a secret he never wanted.
But I recognized him.
Not because I had met him before.
Because I had seen his picture.
The man from the security footage.
The man standing in my parents' kitchen.
The man who watched my daughter get hurt.
My body immediately reacted.
Military training.
Observe.
Control.
Assess.
Do not act before understanding.
But every instinct inside me wanted answers.
"Who are you?"
The man looked at me.
Then at Ruby standing behind Rebecca.
His expression changed.
Pain.
Regret.
"I'm sorry."
Those were the first words he said.
I felt my anger rise.
"Sorry?"
My voice became colder.
"You stood there while my daughter was hurt."
He lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"Then explain."
He took a slow breath.
"My name is Michael Hayes."
Rebecca suddenly stepped back.
"Hayes?"
The man's eyes moved toward her.
"You know my brother."
The room became silent.
Daniel.
The name from the documents.
The man who disappeared.
The man everyone thought was gone.
My heart started beating faster.
"You are Daniel's brother?"
Michael nodded.
"And I was the last person who saw him."
My father closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
I turned toward him.
"Dad."
He didn't respond.
"How long have you known?"
His silence was enough.
I looked back at Michael.
"Why were you there that night?"
Michael looked toward Ruby.
"Because Daniel asked me to watch."
My entire body went cold.
"Watch what?"
He looked at Vanessa.
"Her."
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"Don't listen to him."
Michael didn't even look surprised.
"You always do that."
His voice was quiet.
"You always convince people that everyone else is lying."
Vanessa's face hardened.
"You disappeared."
Michael nodded.
"Because I was afraid."
Those words changed the room.
A grown man admitting fear.
Not embarrassment.
Not guilt.
Fear.
I moved closer.
"Afraid of Vanessa?"
He looked at me.
"Afraid of what your family would do after Daniel disappeared."
I looked at my parents.
"What does that mean?"
Michael reached into his jacket.
My father immediately stepped forward.
"Don't."
Michael stopped.
That reaction confirmed everything.
Michael slowly removed a small flash drive.
He held it in his hand.
"This is what Daniel wanted you to have."
I stared at it.
A tiny object.
But somehow it felt heavier than everything else in the room.
"What is it?"
Michael looked at Vanessa.
"Everything."
Vanessa's expression changed.
For the first time, she looked truly afraid.
Not nervous.
Not uncomfortable.
Terrified.
My father moved toward Michael.
"Give me that."
Michael stepped away.
"No."
My father’s voice became louder.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
Michael looked at him.
"I understand exactly what I'm doing."
Rebecca moved beside me.
"Emma, we need to secure that evidence."
I nodded.
Michael handed the flash drive to Rebecca.
But before she could put it away, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then a voice came through.
A voice I had never heard before.
But the words made my blood turn cold.
"Emma Carter."
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then:
"The person who was in the kitchen before Vanessa touched your daughter."
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
The voice continued.
"You think Vanessa is the person you should fear."
Silence.
"You are wrong."
My heart raced.
"Why are you calling me?"
The person on the other end whispered:
"Because Daniel never disappeared."
The entire room froze.
I looked at Michael.
His face had gone pale.
I looked at my father.
He was shaking.
Then the voice said:
"He was hidden."
I swallowed.
"Where?"
A long pause.
Then:
"Ask your mother what is behind the wall in Ruby's room."
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Ruby looked at me.
"Mom?"
I forced myself to breathe.
Rebecca immediately turned toward my parents.
"What wall?"
My mother started crying.
My father looked at the floor.
And Vanessa whispered something that made everyone stop.
"He wasn't supposed to find the room..."
I turned toward her.
"What room?"
Vanessa looked at me.
Her face was completely drained of color.
Then, from upstairs, we heard a sound.
A door opening.
A door that had been locked for years.
My father whispered:
"Emma..."
May you like
I looked toward the stairs.
Because someone was already inside Ruby's room.
