Chapter 7 - The Name They Buried

The old man looked at me.
"She was never Elena Carter."
Nobody spoke.
The sentence stayed in the air.
Heavy.
Impossible.
I looked around the room.
At Adrian.
At Marianne.
At the woman who looked like my mother.
All of them were silent.
And that silence told me more than words could.
"You knew."
My voice came out low.
Adrian looked away.
Marianne closed her eyes.
The woman wearing my mother's face whispered:
"Elena..."
I turned toward her.
"Don't call me that."
Her expression broke.
Not anger.
Pain.
"I know this is confusing."
"No."
I shook my head.
"This isn't confusing."
I stepped back.
"This is my entire life."
The old man walked slowly into the morgue.
The guards followed him.
Nobody stopped him.
Nobody dared.
He looked exactly like the photographs upstairs.
Charles Hawthorne.
The man everyone respected.
The man who donated hospitals.
The man whose name appeared on buildings across the city.
The man who had been hiding behind a perfect reputation.
He looked at me like he was looking at something he had lost.
Not like a granddaughter.
Like property.
"You have your mother's eyes."
I stared at him.
"Who am I?"
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Adrian.
"You should have stayed dead."
Adrian stepped forward.
"And you should have been arrested years ago."
The guards moved instantly.
Guns appeared.
My heart stopped.
"Enough."
Charles raised his hand.
The guards froze.
He looked back at me.
"You deserve the truth."
I almost laughed.
The truth.
Everyone kept saying that.
But every truth gave me another lie.
"Then tell me."
Charles nodded.
"Your name is not Elena Carter."
The woman behind me gasped softly.
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
Charles continued.
"Your real name is Elena Hawthorne."
The room became silent.
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
"No."
He didn't react.
"You are my granddaughter."
I shook my head.
"My mother was not a Hawthorne."
Charles smiled slightly.
"That is exactly what she wanted you to believe."
My hands curled into fists.
"Don't talk about my mother."
His expression changed.
For the first time.
Something close to anger appeared.
"Your mother betrayed this family."
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
"She protected Elena from you."
Charles looked at him.
"And you failed to protect yourself."
The words hit something inside Adrian.
He looked away.
I noticed.
A small reaction.
A wound.
"Adrian."
He looked at me.
"Tell me."
He remained silent.
"Tell me if he's lying."
Seconds passed.
Then he said:
"He's not lying."
My chest tightened.
I stared at him.
"You knew?"
Adrian looked devastated.
"I knew part of it."
"Part?"
He swallowed.
"Your mother changed your identity after she discovered what my father was doing."
I looked at Charles.
"What was he doing?"
Charles didn't answer.
Adrian did.
"He was removing people from the world."
The guards shifted.
Charles remained calm.
"Careful."
Adrian ignored him.
"People who threatened the Hawthorne empire disappeared."
I looked at the coffins around us.
The cold room.
The hidden cameras.
The locked doors.
"This place..."
Adrian nodded.
"Was where they erased the evidence."
A sick feeling rose inside me.
"People were buried here?"
"Yes."
I looked at Charles.
"And you?"
He looked at me.
"I built this family."
"No."
My voice became stronger.
"You destroyed people."
Charles sighed.
"You are young."
I laughed.
"Young?"
I pointed at myself.
"You stole my memories."
His face changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A reaction.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
He walked closer.
"Your mother was brilliant."
I said nothing.
"She discovered a way to manipulate memory."
The woman beside me looked down.
"She didn't want to use it."
Charles continued.
"But I did."
The honesty shocked me.
I expected denial.
A lie.
Anything.
Not this.
"You admit it?"
"I protected what I built."
My stomach turned.
"By destroying lives?"
"By preventing chaos."
I stared at him.
He actually believed it.
That was the worst part.
He didn't think he was evil.
He thought he was necessary.
Charles looked at me.
"Your mother tried to expose me."
A pause.
"She took you and ran."
I swallowed.
"What happened?"
His eyes moved toward the woman beside me.
"Ask her."
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped forward.
Slowly.
"I was there."
Her voice trembled.
"The night your mother disappeared."
I stared.
"Who are you?"
She looked at me.
"My name is Clara."
Not my mother.
Not exactly.
"My sister was Marianne."
I frowned.
The woman looked at me.
"I was your mother's twin."
Everything stopped.
The impossible became another impossible.
"You lied."
She nodded.
"I did."
"Why?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because your mother asked me to."
I shook my head.
"She asked you to pretend to be her?"
"Only if they found you."
My breathing slowed.
"Why?"
Clara looked at Charles.
"Because he would never stop searching."
Charles said nothing.
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
Clara continued.
"Your mother knew she couldn't defeat him."
"So she hid me?"
"She hid you."
I looked at Adrian.
"Why doesn't he remember?"
Clara looked confused.
"Who?"
"Me."
She became silent.
Then her expression changed.
Realization.
"Oh."
The word was barely audible.
"What?"
She looked at Charles.
"What did you do?"
Charles didn't answer.
Adrian stepped closer.
"What did you do to her?"
Charles looked at the guards.
Nobody moved.
Then he said:
"She was safer without the memories."
I felt sick.
"You erased them."
"I protected you."
"You stole me from myself."
Charles looked almost hurt.
"One day you will understand."
I turned away.
I couldn't look at him.
Because somewhere inside me...
A small part of me still remembered a grandfather I never knew.
A man from stories.
A man who should have protected me.
Not destroyed me.
Then Adrian suddenly looked toward the security screens.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Nobody answered.
He walked closer.
The screens showed different rooms throughout the estate.
Hallways.
Offices.
Bedrooms.
Then one camera feed appeared.
An underground room.
A room I had never seen.
A woman was sitting inside.
Older.
Weak.
Connected to machines.
My heart stopped.
Because even from the blurry image...
I knew her.
Clara whispered:
"No."
I stepped toward the screen.
"Who is that?"
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
My fingers touched the monitor.
The woman on the screen slowly lifted her head.
She looked directly into the camera.
Directly at me.
Then her lips moved.
The sound came through the speakers.
A broken whisper.
"Elena..."
I couldn't breathe.
Because that voice was real.
Not a recording.
Not an imitation.
Not a trick.
May you like
My mother was alive.
And she was locked beneath the Hawthorne Estate.
