Chapter 11 - The Heir Who Was Never Forgotten

Daniel Hawthorne smiled at the camera.

And everyone in the room became afraid.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

I looked at Charles.

The powerful man who had controlled every conversation.

The man who never showed weakness.

Was staring at the screen like he had seen a ghost.

"Who is he?"

Nobody answered.

Claire picked up the fallen bracelet from the floor.

Her hands were shaking.

"Daniel."

She whispered the name like it belonged to a nightmare.

Adrian stepped closer to the monitor.

"No."

His voice was almost silent.

I looked at him.

"You know him too."

He didn't deny it.

"Everyone in this family knows him."

Charles turned away from the screen.

"Lock the estate."

The guards immediately moved.

The command was automatic.

But there was something different.

Panic.

Not control.

Panic.

I noticed it.

And so did everyone else.

My mother slowly pushed herself higher on the bed.

"Charles."

He stopped.

She looked at him.

"After all these years..."

Her voice was weak.

"But you are still afraid of him."

Charles didn't answer.

That was enough.

I looked at Claire.

"Who is Daniel Hawthorne?"

She stared at the screen.

"The first child."

My heart tightened.

"First?"

She nodded.

"The heir before me."

I frowned.

"But you said you were the first."

Claire looked at Charles.

"That's what he wanted everyone to believe."

The room became silent.

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Daniel was born before both of you."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He nodded.

"He was Charles' first son."

I looked back at the screen.

The man outside.

The person who made Charles Hawthorne afraid.

"The missing heir."

Claire nodded.

"He disappeared twenty years ago."

My mother closed her eyes.

"Not disappeared."

Everyone looked at her.

"He was removed."

Charles turned sharply.

"Enough."

My mother looked at him.

"No."

Her voice was stronger.

"You spent years rewriting everyone's stories."

She looked at me.

"But not this one."

I moved closer to her.

"What happened to him?"

She looked at Daniel's image on the screen.

"Daniel was the only person who knew what Charles really wanted."

"What did he want?"

My mother hesitated.

Then:

"Immortality."

The word sounded impossible.

But after everything I had learned...

Nothing felt impossible anymore.

She continued.

"Not living forever."

She shook her head.

"Something worse."

I waited.

"Never losing control."

The room stayed quiet.

Charles looked furious.

"She is confused."

My mother laughed softly.

"You always say that when people tell the truth."

Charles looked at me.

"Elena, don't listen to them."

I turned.

The way he said my name bothered me.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it sounded like he was trying to remind me who I was.

Who he wanted me to be.

I stepped away.

"Don't call me that like you own it."

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

The first crack.

The first time he realized I was not the child he lost.

I was an adult who could question him.

A sound came from the speakers.

The estate security system activated.

A message appeared.

FRONT GATE OPENED.

Then another.

SECONDARY SECURITY DISABLED.

Then another.

PRIVATE ARCHIVES ACCESSED.

Adrian looked toward Charles.

"He is inside."

Charles immediately moved toward the door.

"No."

Claire followed him with her eyes.

"You are scared."

Charles stopped.

He looked at her.

"You don't know what he is capable of."

Claire smiled bitterly.

"Neither did you."

The door to the medical room suddenly locked.

Everyone froze.

The guards tried opening it.

Nothing.

The lights flickered.

Then the speakers turned on.

A man's voice filled the room.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

"Hello, Father."

Charles looked up.

His face went pale.

Daniel.

The voice continued.

"I spent twenty years waiting for you to admit what you did."

Charles said nothing.

Daniel laughed softly.

"And you still choose silence."

I looked at the speaker.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"The person who remembers everything."

The words made Claire look away.

Adrian whispered:

"No."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He stared at the ceiling.

"That's impossible."

The voice continued.

"Elena."

I froze.

Everyone turned toward me.

Daniel said my name.

Not like Charles did.

Not like someone claiming ownership.

Like someone who had known me before.

"You probably don't remember me."

My heart raced.

"Why would I?"

A pause.

Then:

"Because Charles made sure you wouldn't."

Charles stepped toward the speaker.

"Stop."

Daniel ignored him.

"You were three years old when I last saw you."

I felt dizzy.

Three years old.

A memory flashed.

A hand.

A voice.

Someone carrying me.

Someone saying:

"Don't be scared. I'll find you again."

I grabbed the edge of the bed.

A headache exploded through my mind.

Images.

Broken pieces.

A little boy.

Older than me.

Holding my hand.

A room full of machines.

My mother crying.

A man shouting.

Then darkness.

"Elena?"

My mother grabbed my hand.

I looked at her.

"I remember something."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"What?"

I touched my forehead.

"A boy."

Nobody moved.

"A boy was there."

Claire looked at me.

"Daniel."

I nodded slowly.

"He told me he would come back."

The speaker went silent.

Then Daniel whispered:

"You remembered."

A chill moved through the room.

Charles looked terrified.

"How?"

Daniel answered:

"Because you never erased her."

Everyone froze.

"What does that mean?" I asked.

Daniel's voice became softer.

"You only buried the memories."

The machines beside my mother started beeping.

Faster.

Faster.

A doctor rushed in.

But this time, nobody cared.

Because the door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone turned.

The handle moved.

Slowly.

The person outside did not knock.

They didn't need permission.

The door opened.

And standing there was a woman holding a folder.

An old folder.

A folder with my name on it.

She looked at Charles.

Then at me.

And whispered:

"I found the original records."

She opened the folder.

The first page was visible.

A birth certificate.

But it had a different date.

May you like

A different name.

And a different mother.
