THE CALL FROM CABO / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Exchange

Irene watched the video twice.

Not because she wanted to.

Because she needed every detail.

Concrete wall.

Metal shelving.

A high rectangular window.

Faint train horn.

Elaine stood behind Sarah with a handgun.

The timestamp was current.

"Bring me Daniel," Elaine repeated. "Or Irene loses her daughter the way she lost everyone else."

The video ended.

Daniel was still in federal custody.

Irene immediately said, "No exchange."

Reed looked surprised.

Evelyn did too.

Irene's hands trembled, but her voice didn't.

"Elaine wants Daniel because he knows something. Giving him to her won't save Sarah."

Daniel was brought into the command room.

When he saw the video, his face collapsed.

"I'll go."

Irene looked at him.

"Sit down."

"Irene—"

"Sit."

He did.

"What does Elaine need from you?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Access phrase."

"To the twelve-million-dollar trust?"

"Yes."

"Why would you have it?"

"Your father gave it to me before he died."

Irene stared.

"Another secret."

Daniel nodded miserably.

"The trust requires two separate authorizations. Sarah's identity is one. The phrase is the second."

"Tell the bank to shut it down."

"Already tried."

Reed explained that the offshore institution had unusual legacy rules. They could freeze related domestic movement, but the core structure required court intervention.

Elaine wanted speed.

Sarah was leverage.

Evelyn spoke quietly.

"Elaine doesn't just want money."

Everyone looked at her.

"She hates Irene."

Irene frowned.

"Why?"

"Because your father chose you."

"Chose me for what?"

"Everything."

Evelyn explained their father discovered Elaine existed when she was nine.

He supported her financially but never publicly acknowledged her.

Elaine grew up knowing Irene lived in the recognized family home while she remained hidden.

When he created the trust, he named Irene's descendants.

Not Elaine.

That resentment became a lifetime obsession.

"I tried to help her," Evelyn said.

"You helped everyone except me," Irene replied.

Evelyn lowered her gaze.

Fair.

Reed's team analyzed the video.

Train frequency.

Sun angle.

Industrial shelving.

Audio.

One analyst identified a freight line running near an abandoned cold-storage complex.

Police prepared.

Elaine sent another message.

NO POLICE.

COME WITH DANIEL.

Irene typed back:

PROVE SARAH IS ALIVE.

A live video call arrived.

Sarah appeared.

Her lip was bleeding.

But she was conscious.

"Mom."

"I'm here."

"I'm sorry."

"Not now."

Elaine stepped into frame.

"Touching."

Irene stared at her half-sister.

"You always wanted what belonged to me."

Elaine smiled.

"That's what Mom told you?"

"No."

"Then you're still ignorant."

"Explain."

"Later."

"No. Now."

Elaine's smile faded.

Irene realized something.

Elaine loved control.

Questions threatened control.

So Irene kept asking.

"Was Walter working for you?"

"Sometimes."

"Did you order Sarah drugged?"

"No."

"Did Keller?"

Elaine's eyes flickered.

There.

A weakness.

Keller acted independently.

Reed noticed too.

Irene continued.

"Where's Walter?"

"Probably confessing by now."

"You're afraid of him."

Elaine laughed.

"Hardly."

"You escaped detention. You kidnapped Sarah. You're holding a gun while begging for a password. You look afraid to me."

Elaine's expression turned cold.

"Bring Daniel in one hour."

Call ended.

Daniel looked at Irene.

"You were provoking her."

"I was making her talk."

Reed nodded.

"And it worked."

Keller was the unpredictable player.

They traced his known properties.

One was an abandoned rehabilitation hospital beside the freight corridor.

The video walls matched.

Police moved.

But Elaine anticipated them.

By the time the tactical team entered, the building was empty.

A chair remained.

Rope.

Blood.

Sarah's bracelet.

On the wall, written in marker:

WRONG BUILDING.

Irene nearly broke.

Reed kept searching.

Then Daniel noticed the freight timetable.

"She isn't near the train."

Everyone looked at him.

"She's inside one."

A decommissioned refrigerated railcar depot sat twelve miles south.

Security footage showed a van entering forty minutes earlier.

Police surrounded the site quietly.

Irene was ordered to remain back.

She refused.

Reed compromised again.

She stayed in the command vehicle.

Cameras showed officers entering.

Gunshot.

Irene flinched.

Then another.

Radio chatter erupted.

"Suspect moving east."

"Hostage located."

Irene stopped breathing.

"Hostage secure."

She burst into tears.

Sarah was alive.

Elaine escaped through a maintenance tunnel.

Sarah arrived in an ambulance.

Irene climbed inside.

For several seconds mother and daughter stared at each other.

Then Sarah whispered, "I thought she was going to kill me."

Irene took her hand.

"I know."

"I'm so sorry."

"I know."

This time the words meant something different.

Sarah cried.

"I don't deserve you."

"Probably not today."

Sarah gave a broken laugh.

Irene squeezed her fingers.

"But you're still my daughter."

At the hospital, Sarah revealed something Elaine said while holding her.

"She said Dad killed Grandpa."

Irene looked at Daniel.

He went completely still.

"Daniel?"

He did not answer.

"Did you kill my father?"

"No."

"Then why do you look like that?"

Daniel sat down.

"Because I know who did."

Irene waited.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn's face changed.

Irene slowly turned toward her mother.

"Mom?"

Evelyn whispered, "Irene, please."

Irene stepped backward.

Daniel said, "Your father was going to expose the network."

Evelyn began crying.

"I didn't mean—"

Irene stared at her.

"What did you do?"

Before Evelyn could answer, the hospital lights went out.

Emergency alarms sounded.

Reed drew his weapon.

A nurse screamed from the corridor.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

"Nobody move."

May you like

Dr. Keller had entered the hospital.

And he wasn't alone.
