THE CALL FROM CABO / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Woman With My Face

Irene stared at the photograph.

Reed took the phone.

"That's not you?"

"No."

The image was convincing.

The woman stood sideways near Irene's porch.

Older.

Silver hair.

Similar build.

From a distance, almost identical.

But Irene noticed one difference.

The woman wore a ring on her right hand.

A large emerald.

Irene had seen it before.

On an old photograph.

Her father's sister.

Martha.

Except Martha supposedly died as a teenager, years before Irene was born.

Reed frowned.

"How many dead relatives are still walking around?"

Irene almost laughed.

"Apparently all of them."

Genealogical research reopened.

Martha had not died.

Her records had been altered after a juvenile institutionalization.

She later used multiple names.

One alias connected directly to Margaret Hale's network.

Irene realized the entire criminal organization predated her parents.

Generational fraud disguised through deaths, remarriages, hidden relatives, and changed identities.

Martha was now seventy-seven.

And according to financial data, she controlled the unexplained account.

Why use Irene's identity?

Because the trust belonged to the Mercer line.

Martha believed it should have been hers.

Another inheritance war.

Another relative deciding blood entitled them to theft.

Irene was tired of it.

Martha called the next day.

"You look like your mother," she said.

Irene recorded the call.

"You look like me."

Martha laughed.

"Family resemblance."

"You stole $2.4 million."

"I recovered it."

"That phrase seems popular in this family."

"You don't understand what your father did."

Irene nearly smiled.

Everyone said the same thing.

"You know what, Martha? I don't care anymore."

Silence.

"You should."

"No. If my father stole from you, we investigate it. If the money belongs to you, you receive it legally. If it doesn't, you return it."

"You think courts decide justice?"

"Yes. That's generally preferable to knocking your mother unconscious or faking your death."

Martha laughed again.

"I like you."

"I don't care."

Then Martha said something unexpected.

"The money isn't why I contacted you."

"What is?"

"Elaine escaped."

Irene's stomach tightened.

"No, she didn't."

"Check."

The line disconnected.

Reed called federal custody.

Elaine was present.

Secure.

He almost dismissed the warning.

Then Irene said, "Video call."

They requested visual confirmation.

The woman in the cell looked like Elaine.

But when she turned, Irene noticed something.

No scar behind the left ear.

Elaine had received that scar falling from a bicycle at age eleven.

The prisoner wasn't Elaine.

Another substitute.

Keller had built systems for replacing identities.

Someone used one again.

The real Elaine was free.

The case reignited.

Martha offered information in exchange for immunity on unrelated historical crimes.

Federal prosecutors negotiated limited cooperation.

She revealed Elaine's likely destination.

A coastal property owned under a shell company.

The same region where Sarah and Dean had gone.

Cabo.

Everything had circled back.

Irene almost couldn't believe it.

Elaine had chosen Mexico because international financial infrastructure there connected to the original accounts.

Sarah's vacation had not been Sarah's idea entirely.

Dean confirmed that Walter recommended Cabo through Sarah.

The stolen-money trip was also a setup.

Elaine intended Sarah to activate offshore access while believing she was merely spending stolen cash.

Sarah had been manipulated at every stage.

That did not excuse her assault.

But it explained the architecture around it.

Reed asked Irene to remain home while federal teams moved.

Irene agreed.

She was finished chasing criminals.

For once, she let professionals do their jobs.

Hours later, Sarah called from her program.

"I heard Elaine escaped."

"Yes."

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"Do you think she'll come for me?"

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because she wants control. And you're finally learning how not to give it to people."

Sarah was quiet.

Then:

"I wish I'd learned that before I hurt you."

"So do I."

"Can you forgive me?"

Irene looked through the same glass front door Sarah had once pounded.

"I don't know yet."

Sarah breathed shakily.

"Okay."

"But I'm trying."

That was enough for both of them.

The Cabo operation found the property empty.

Elaine was gone again.

But agents recovered financial records proving the $2.4 million Martha took was only a fraction of a larger hidden reserve.

Thirty-one million dollars.

Some legitimate.

Some stolen.

Some impossible to categorize after decades.

Elaine intended to disappear permanently.

Martha predicted she would need a new identity.

Only one person could provide that.

Dr. Keller.

But Keller was in federal custody.

Or so everyone thought.

Visual confirmation revealed the same problem.

The man held as Keller was not Keller.

The actual doctor had disappeared during hospital treatment after the cemetery shooting.

Two major fugitives.

Together.

Irene received another call that night.

This time no disguised number.

It came from Daniel's old phone.

She answered.

Elaine spoke.

"Hello, sister."

"We're not sisters."

"Close enough."

"What do you want?"

"You."

"No."

Elaine laughed.

"I expected that."

"Then why call?"

"Because you should know Sarah is about to make another terrible mistake."

Irene stood.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

"Elaine."

"Check her room."

The call ended.

Irene phoned the residential center.

Sarah was missing.

She left voluntarily twenty minutes earlier after receiving a message supposedly from Irene.

The message said:

I FOUND DAD'S ORIGINAL LETTER. COME ALONE. DON'T TELL ANYONE.

Irene's blood ran cold.

Sarah had fallen for another trap.

But this time there was a difference.

Sarah had left something behind.

A handwritten note on her bed.

MOM—I KNOW THIS MESSAGE ISN'T FROM YOU. I'M GOING BECAUSE I THINK I CAN LEAD THEM TO ELAINE. I PUT A TRACKER IN MY SHOE. PLEASE TRUST ME ONCE.

Reed stared at the note.

Irene closed her eyes.

"She went willingly."

"Yes."

"Without authorization."

"Yes."

"That's reckless."

"Very."

Reed looked at her.

"What do you want to do?"

Irene opened her eyes.

"Trust her enough to follow the tracker."

The signal moved south.

Then stopped at an abandoned airport hangar.

Federal teams surrounded it.

Sarah's tracker remained inside.

Agents entered.

No Sarah.

Only her shoe.

And a note.

TELL MOM I LEARNED FROM THE BEST.

Irene's phone rang.

Sarah.

She answered.

"Sarah?"

Her daughter whispered:

"Mom, don't send anyone to the hangar. Elaine is watching it."

"Where are you?"

"I switched cars."

"Are you safe?"

"For now."

"Come home."

"I can't."

"Sarah."

"I know where Elaine is."

Irene stood.

"Where?"

Sarah inhaled.

"She's at your house."

Irene slowly looked toward the dark hallway behind her.

A floorboard creaked.

Exactly like the night Walter had broken in.

May you like

Then Elaine's voice came from the kitchen.

"Hello, Irene."
