Chapter 7 - The Camera Above My Bed

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then the lights returned.

The monitors restarted.

The hospital room looked exactly as it had before.

Except the camera above my bed was gone.

I stared at the empty bracket.

Someone had removed it.

While we were standing there.

Andrés swore under his breath.

“They're inside the hospital system.”

Jimena closed the curtains.

“Then we stop using electronic devices.”

Gabriel looked at me.

“There's one place they can't reach.”

“Where?”

“Your memory.”

I almost smiled.

Then the door opened.

A hospital administrator entered with two security officers.

“Everyone needs to leave.”

Andrés stepped forward.

“Why?”

“Security protocol.”

“Who authorized it?”

The administrator showed him a tablet.

My name appeared.

PATIENT TRANSFER ORDER.

I stared at it.

“I didn't request a transfer.”

The administrator frowned.

“Your husband did.”

Mateo.

Of course.

Jimena stepped between us.

“This transfer is canceled.”

The administrator hesitated.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“Understood.”

He hung up.

“We're leaving.”

Andrés smiled coldly.

“No.”

The administrator looked nervous.

Then Gabriel spoke.

“Tell Teresa she failed.”

The administrator went pale.

That was enough.

Andrés knew.

“So you know Teresa.”

The man ran.

The security officers tried to stop him.

One succeeded.

The other pulled a weapon.

Everything happened at once.

Gabriel grabbed Jimena.

Andrés pushed me away from the line of sight.

The officer lowered the weapon.

Then ran.

Nobody fired.

But the message was clear.

They were willing to use force.

Later that night, the police arrived.

The hospital room became a controlled scene.

Jimena showed them the recording of Teresa's attack.

Andrés showed them the altered insurance documents.

Gabriel showed them evidence connecting Teresa to the old fraud.

But there was still one missing piece.

The person who had ordered the terrace sabotage.

At 2:13 a.m., my phone received one final message.

No number.

No name.

Just six words.

YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO I AM.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

It showed Teresa.

Standing beside Mateo.

May you like

And between them stood a woman I had never seen.

The woman was wearing my wedding ring...
