Chapter 14 - Why They Chose Me

The woman who entered was Victoria.
She carried no guards.
No lawyer.
No documents.
Only a small envelope.
“I owe you the truth,” she said.
I let her sit.
She explained everything.
Years earlier, Roberto had created an emergency trust.
It could only be accessed by someone outside the Ledesma family.
Someone with forensic financial experience.
Someone with no loyalty to the family.
That person was me.
The foundation had not been the true target.
The trust was.
Roberto had hidden evidence of the entire financial scheme inside it.
He had created a legal mechanism that would automatically transfer control of the assets to the person who uncovered the fraud.
My investigation had triggered it.
I had unknowingly become the legal witness protecting millions of pesos.
That's why they needed me discredited.
That's why the insurance policy mattered.
That's why my identity had been copied.
That's why the accident had been staged.
I was not simply a wife.
I was the person standing between them and the money.
Victoria looked at me.
“I manipulated you.”
“Yes.”
“I endangered you.”
“Yes.”
“I am sorry.”
I believed she meant it.
But forgiveness was not something I could give immediately.
Some wounds needed time.
She left.
Mateo remained.
“You don't have to forgive me,” he said.
“I know.”
“You don't have to come back.”
“I know.”
He looked down.
“I only want you to know that I loved you even when I was afraid.”
I looked at him.
“That was the problem.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
For the first time, he didn't defend himself.
He didn't explain.
He accepted the truth.
Months passed.
Teresa went to trial.
Esteban was convicted on multiple financial charges.
Nicolás accepted a plea agreement after providing evidence.
Victoria testified.
Gabriel became an adviser to the independent foundation.
The stolen money was recovered and redirected into legitimate charitable programs.
The Ledesma family business survived, but under new ownership and strict oversight.
And I began walking again.
One step.
Then another.
The first time I walked without assistance, Mateo stood at the end of the hospital corridor.
He didn't clap.
He didn't cheer.
He simply smiled.
I smiled back.
Not because everything was fixed.
Because for the first time, I was choosing what came next.
Months later, we met in a quiet café.
Mateo placed a small box on the table.
I opened it.
Inside was my wedding ring.
“I don't want you to wear it because you're my wife,” he said.
“I want you to wear it only if you choose me again.”
I looked at him.
Then I looked at the ring.
I wasn't ready to forget.
But I was ready to begin.
I reached for his hand.
And for the first time since the terrace, I wasn't afraid.
We left the café together.
But before we reached the car, my phone rang.
It was Andrés.
His voice sounded different.
“Valeria, there's something you need to see.”
I stopped walking.
“What?”
“We found the original recording from the night you fell.”
I stared at Mateo.
“Didn't we already have it?”
“No.”
Andrés paused.
“This one contains the missing thirty seconds.”
My heart began pounding.
“What was in them?”
May you like
His answer was barely a whisper.
“Your father-in-law was still alive when the railing was opened...”
