Chapter 13 - The Last Lie

The transfer appeared to prove Mateo had hired Nicolás.

For the first time, even I couldn't tell what was real.

Mateo insisted he had never authorized it.

Jimena asked for the original banking records.

The transfer had been made from a computer inside the Ledesma corporate office.

Security footage showed Mateo entering the building.

But the timestamp was wrong.

Andrés discovered the footage had been altered.

The person entering the building wasn't Mateo.

It was Nicolás.

He had copied Mateo's clothing.

His posture.

Even his hairstyle.

The impersonator had been planning this for months.

But who gave him the information?

We returned to the archive.

There was one folder we had missed.

It contained photographs of Nicolás.

Beside him stood Esteban.

And beside Esteban stood Victoria.

They had all worked together at different times.

But there was another photograph.

Teresa.

Standing with them.

The four of them had once been allies.

Then they turned against each other.

That was why the family secrets were so tangled.

Everyone had something to hide.

Everyone had tried to protect themselves.

And I had been the only outsider who didn't know the rules.

I finally understood why Teresa had been so afraid of me.

I didn't belong to their system.

I could see it from outside.

I could follow the money without caring who owned the name.

The trial preparations began.

Teresa was charged.

Esteban was charged.

Nicolás confessed.

Victoria negotiated cooperation.

Mateo provided evidence against the family business.

The foundation was placed under independent supervision.

The money was traced.

Much of it was recovered.

And my identity was cleared.

But I still couldn't sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I felt the pillow.

I felt Teresa's hands.

I heard her whisper.

You should have died.

Recovery was slower than anyone expected.

My body healed.

My trust didn't.

Mateo never pressured me.

He attended every therapy appointment.

He brought coffee.

He sat quietly when I didn't want to talk.

One morning, he placed something on my bedside table.

My wedding ring.

I looked at him.

“I found it in the archive.”

“You wore it?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I kept it because I couldn't throw it away.”

I touched it.

For the first time, I didn't feel trapped by it.

I felt free to choose.

Then my lawyer called.

She told me the prosecutor had found a final piece of evidence.

A recording from the terrace.

Audio only.

Someone had captured the entire argument before my fall.

We listened together.

My own voice.

Mateo's voice.

Then Teresa.

Then another voice.

A voice I recognized immediately.

It was my own.

But I had never said those words.

The recording ended with one sentence:

“Tell Valeria the truth about why she was chosen.”

May you like

I stared at Mateo.

Then the door opened...
