Chapter 6 - The Nurse From That Night

The nurse's name was Clara Mendez.
I had never met her.
But Rebeca had.
“She worked the emergency shift the night Valeria arrived,” Rebeca said.
“And she disappeared the next morning.”
Andrés took the badge.
“Where is she now?”
“No one knows.”
Jimena opened her laptop.
“Maybe she left a record.”
We searched the hospital's internal files.
Clara had documented my arrival.
But her final note was strange.
Patient conscious upon arrival.
Patient repeatedly attempted to communicate.
Possible third-party interference.
I stared at the screen.
“Third-party interference?”
Rebeca nodded.
“She wrote that before leaving.”
“What did she see?”
“No idea.”
Gabriel looked toward the hallway.
“Maybe she saw who pushed the railing.”
Andrés immediately called a contact.
Ten minutes later, he returned.
“Clara's apartment was emptied yesterday.”
“By whom?”
“No record.”
I closed my eyes.
Everything was happening too quickly.
Then I remembered something.
“The night I fell, Mateo said something.”
“What?”
“He told me not to move.”
Andrés looked at me.
“Exactly?”
I thought back.
The terrace.
The wind.
Mateo's face.
The broken glass.
Then I remembered another voice.
A woman's voice.
Behind me.
I couldn't identify the words.
But I remembered perfume.
Not gardenias.
Something sweeter.
Vanilla.
Jimena looked at Teresa's photograph.
“Does she wear vanilla?”
“No.”
Gabriel suddenly stood.
“Victoria.”
Everyone turned.
“Who is Victoria?”
“Teresa's sister.”
I stared at him.
“Mateo never mentioned her either.”
“She died fifteen years ago.”
Gabriel's expression was grim.
“That's what everyone believes.”
Another dead relative.
Another secret.
Another person connected to the money.
And then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Andrés answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
“Valeria, if you want to live, don't trust Gabriel.”
The call ended.
I looked at Gabriel.
He looked genuinely shocked.
“I don't know who that was.”
Andrés replayed the recording.
The voice was distorted.
But beneath the distortion was something unmistakable.
A faint hospital alarm.
The caller was nearby.
Very nearby.
Rebeca suddenly looked toward the ceiling camera.
“Someone is watching us.”
May you like
The monitor flickered.
Then every screen in the room went black...
