Chapter 9 - Gideon’s Greatest Lie

The shot came.
Gideon threw himself sideways.
Rosalind fired at the window.
Genevieve dropped.
The bullet missed her by inches.
Chaos followed.
Elias ran.
Genevieve grabbed the memory card.
Gideon collapsed.
She reached him.
“Antidote.”
Rosalind caught Elias at the staircase.
He fought.
She broke his wrist.
The vial fell from his pocket.
Genevieve administered it with shaking hands.
Gideon's breathing steadied.
“You're terrible at obeying instructions,” he murmured.
“So are you.”
Police loyal to Victoria arrived.
Elias was taken alive.
By 7:46, they had twenty-four minutes until the harbor master arrived at his office.
Genevieve inserted the memory card into an isolated laptop.
Video files appeared.
Eleanor had recorded everything.
The Circle.
Names.
Transactions.
Confessions.
And one final video.
For Genevieve.
Her mother appeared on screen.
“If you're watching this, Jenny, then you found page forty-three.”
Genevieve smiled through tears.
Eleanor explained the final secret.
Gideon had discovered the Circle six years earlier.
But he had done more than protect Eleanor.
He had quietly dismantled sections of his own empire.
Closed trafficking routes.
Removed corrupt enforcers.
Redirected illegal funds into legitimate companies.
His reputation remained brutal because fear kept rivals from realizing how much power they had lost.
Genevieve looked at him.
“You never told me.”
“I wasn't doing it for praise.”
The video continued.
Then Eleanor said something unexpected.
“Gideon asked me for permission to marry you two years ago.”
Genevieve turned slowly.
Gideon looked trapped.
“You what?”
He glared at the screen as though her mother had personally betrayed him.
Eleanor continued.
“I told him no.”
Genevieve almost laughed.
Gideon muttered, “This is unnecessary.”
“Quiet.”
“She said I had to ask you for the right reasons,” the recording continued. “So when Arthur later proposed the alliance, Gideon refused twice.”
Genevieve stared at him.
“You refused?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn't want you believing you were payment for a business arrangement.”
“But you eventually agreed.”
“Because the attacks began.”
“And because?”
Gideon said nothing.
Genevieve waited.
He sighed.
“Because marrying you was selfishly preferable to watching someone else do it.”
Despite everything, she smiled.
Then the recording changed.
Eleanor's expression became serious.
“One final warning. The Circle has a contingency. If the marriage is annulled, control of the Vale security network transfers temporarily to the senior surviving trustee.”
Gideon went still.
“Who?”
Victoria answered from behind them.
“Me.”
Everyone turned.
She stood in the doorway.
Genevieve understood.
If she annulled, Victoria gained control.
Was that why Victoria encouraged it?
Victoria saw the suspicion.
“Yes.”
Gideon stood.
“Mother.”
“Don't.”
Victoria raised a gun.
Rosalind froze.
Victoria looked at Genevieve.
“I did not spend twenty-two years hiding so my son could surrender everything because he fell in love.”
There it was.
The final layer.
Victoria had never wanted to destroy the Circle.
She wanted to control it.
Elias had been her operative until greed made him unreliable.
Malcolm was another.
Rosalind whispered, “You used me.”
“I trained you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
Gideon stepped between his mother and Genevieve.
Victoria's face hardened.
“Move.”
“No.”
“You would choose her?”
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
Genevieve's throat tightened.
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“Your father made the same mistake.”
“My father chose people over power.”
“And died for it.”
“Maybe.”
Gideon looked at Genevieve.
“But he died himself.”
Victoria's weapon shifted.
Genevieve saw Rosalind move.
A shot exploded.
The gun fell.
Victoria screamed, clutching her hand.
Rosalind had shot the weapon from her grip.
Security rushed in.
Victoria was restrained.
For the first time all night, silence came.
Genevieve looked at the clock.
8:02.
The harbor master would arrive soon.
Her annulment petition remained valid.
Gideon picked it up.
He signed the final witness acknowledgment.
Then handed it to her.
“You're free.”
Genevieve looked at his signature.
“Just like that?”
“No.”
His eyes met hers.
“Nothing about you has ever been just anything.”
She folded the document.
At 8:17, Genevieve Winterborne walked toward the harbor authority to end her marriage.
At 8:18, her phone received a video from an unknown number.
She opened it.
Her mother was tied to a chair.
Malcolm stood behind her.
