Chapter 13 - The Secret Genevieve Took

Eleanor had not been kidnapped.
She had left voluntarily.
A security camera showed her entering a car alone.
Genevieve found a note in her mother's room.
Jenny,
There is one final debt I have to pay.
Do not follow me.
Naturally, Genevieve followed.
The destination was an old cemetery overlooking the sea.
Eleanor stood before Dominic Vale's grave.
Victoria waited beside her.
Genevieve froze behind a stone wall.
Victoria had escaped custody during the harbor fires.
Gideon arrived silently behind Genevieve.
She glared.
“You followed me.”
“Marriage.”
“Not an explanation.”
“My best one.”
They listened.
Victoria wanted the original ledger.
Not the copy.
Eleanor had it.
“Why?” Eleanor asked.
“To destroy it.”
“The evidence is public.”
“Not everything.”
Genevieve understood.
There were pages her mother had removed.
Secrets not connected to crimes.
Personal secrets.
Children.
Affairs.
Informants.
People who would be endangered unnecessarily.
Eleanor had protected them.
Victoria wanted one name erased.
Dominic's killer.
“You killed him,” Eleanor said.
Gideon stiffened.
Victoria began to cry.
“Yes.”
Twenty-two years earlier, Dominic planned to expose the Circle.
Victoria believed exposure would kill Gideon.
She poisoned her husband.
Then staged her own death.
Gideon's hand trembled.
Genevieve took it.
He did not pull away.
Victoria raised a gun toward Eleanor.
Gideon stepped out.
“Mother.”
Victoria turned.
Everything in her face broke.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“You killed him.”
“To save you.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“You killed him to keep power.”
Victoria cried harder.
“I did everything for you.”
“Then do one thing for me now.”
“What?”
“Put the gun down.”
For several seconds, Genevieve thought she might.
Then Victoria aimed at herself.
Gideon moved.
Genevieve moved faster.
She struck Victoria's wrist.
The gun fired harmlessly into the ground.
Gideon caught his mother.
Victoria collapsed against him.
Not a queen.
Not a mastermind.
Just an exhausted woman who had destroyed everything she claimed to protect.
Police arrived.
This time, Victoria did not resist.
Eleanor gave Genevieve the original ledger.
“What will you do with it?”
Genevieve looked at the pages containing private names.
“Protect the innocent.”
“And the guilty?”
“Let them meet consequences.”
Eleanor smiled.
“You sound like your father.”
“Which one?”
They both laughed.
Arthur would remain her father.
Biologically.
Legally.
Emotionally.
No forged certificate could change it.
Genevieve took the ledger home.
She and Gideon burned only the pages whose disclosure would harm uninvolved families.
The evidence remained preserved elsewhere.
When the final private page burned, Gideon asked, “What now?”
Genevieve looked at their wedding photograph.
“We decide whether we actually want to be married.”
His expression became careful.
“And?”
“I haven't decided.”
He nodded.
“No pressure.”
“You're learning.”
“Painfully.”
The following morning, Genevieve received confirmation that the Meridian Circle's remaining accounts had been frozen.
It was over.
Or nearly.
One account had transferred a final payment before closure.
One million dollars.
Recipient unknown.
Genevieve traced it to a private investigator.
She contacted him.
He refused to explain.
Until she mentioned Victoria.
Then he sent a file.
Inside were surveillance photographs.
All of Genevieve.
For three years.
Restaurants.
Meetings.
Her apartment.
Her office.
Gideon appeared in many.
Watching from a distance.
Genevieve's heart tightened.
At the bottom was the investigator's original instruction.
PROTECT G.W. WITHOUT CONTACT.
CLIENT: GIDEON VALE.
She found Gideon in the library.
“You had me followed for three years.”
He looked at the photographs.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Threats began before the marriage negotiations.”
“And you didn't tell me.”
“No.”
She closed her eyes.
The old problem.
Protection without consent.
Love expressed as control.
Gideon understood.
“I'll leave.”
“What?”
“The estate. The marriage. Whatever you need.”
Genevieve looked at him.
He was finally giving her the thing he had denied her from the beginning.
Choice.
She placed the surveillance file on the desk.
“I need time.”
“You have it.”
Gideon left that afternoon.
Not for another woman.
Not for a secret mission.
Because his wife asked for space.
Three months passed.
Then Genevieve received a letter.
No black seal.
No blood.
Just Gideon's handwriting.
She opened it.
There was only one sentence.
IF YOU STILL WANT THE ANNULMENT, I WILL BE AT PIER SEVENTEEN AT SUNSET TO SIGN IT.
Genevieve folded the letter.
At sunset, she went to the harbor.
Gideon was already waiting.
But he wasn't alone.
May you like
A woman stood beside him.
And she was wearing Genevieve's mother's necklace.
