Chapter 11 - The Enemy Inside the Family

Genevieve withdrew the annulment petition.

She did not affirm the marriage.

She simply refused to end it under threat.

The clock reached nine.

The certificate registered.

Gideon Vale and Genevieve Winterborne remained legally married.

But Genevieve leaned over him as paramedics worked.

“This does not mean I forgive you.”

His faint smile appeared.

“I wouldn't insult you by assuming it did.”

He survived surgery.

By noon, the ledger had detonated across Port Aurelia.

Arrests began.

Accounts froze.

Companies collapsed.

The Circle's network fractured.

Arthur voluntarily surrendered Winterborne records to investigators.

Rosalind testified.

Elias negotiated for protection.

Victoria refused.

Malcolm blamed everyone but himself.

Genevieve spent thirty-six hours beside Gideon's hospital bed.

When he woke, she was asleep in the chair.

He watched her quietly.

“You're staring.”

“You were asleep.”

“Still rude.”

“Are we married?”

“Yes.”

He considered that.

“Are you staying?”

“For breakfast.”

“Promising.”

“Don't push it.”

Over the following week, Genevieve learned the cost of truth.

Winterborne Shipping lost contracts.

Vale businesses were raided.

Headlines called their wedding everything from a criminal merger to a trap.

The supposed mistress scandal disappeared beneath larger revelations.

Rosalind found that amusing.

“I spent six years pretending to sleep with Gideon, and that's the story they stop caring about?”

Genevieve smiled.

“You sound offended.”

“I worked hard on that reputation.”

Eleanor returned publicly from the dead.

That caused another media storm.

Mother and daughter began the difficult work of becoming family again.

There were no magical repairs.

Eighteen years could not disappear.

But there were breakfasts.

Long conversations.

Tears.

Anger.

And eventually laughter.

Gideon recovered at the estate.

Genevieve moved into a separate bedroom.

He did not complain.

He courted his wife.

Flowers failed.

She returned them.

Jewelry failed.

She locked it in his safe.

Then he brought her coffee during a six-hour audit meeting.

That worked.

Three weeks after the wedding, Genevieve discovered one remaining anomaly in the ledger.

A transfer dated after Victoria's arrest.

The Circle was still moving money.

She traced it.

The authorization came from inside Winterborne Shipping.

Someone remained.

She showed Arthur.

He looked devastated.

“Only three people have that access.”

“Me. You. And Chief Financial Officer Nathan Bell.”

Nathan had worked for the family for twenty-five years.

Arthur called security.

Too late.

Nathan's office was empty.

On his desk sat an envelope.

For Genevieve.

Inside was a photograph of Gideon leaving the hospital.

Crosshairs had been drawn over his face.

A note read:

THE CIRCLE DOES NOT NEED AN EMPIRE.

IT NEEDS A WIDOW.

Genevieve called Gideon.

No answer.

She called again.

Nothing.

Then her phone rang.

Gideon's number.

She answered.

A stranger spoke.

“Mrs. Vale?”

Genevieve stood.

“Yes.”

“We found your husband's car.”

Her hand tightened around the phone.

“Where is he?”

May you like

The stranger paused.

“The driver's seat was covered in blood.”
