Chapter 9 - The Father's Last Promise

The message from the unknown number contained only one sentence.

"She knows where the original documents are hidden."

Rebecca read it twice.

Then she looked at Sofia.

Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.

The person who sent the message was not warning us.

They were telling us someone was about to make a move.

"Who is she?"

Alexander asked.

Rebecca did not answer immediately.

She already knew.

We all did.

Melissa.

Javier's sister.

The person who had stood beside Sofia on her wedding day.

The person who had helped destroy it.

Sofia sat quietly.

Too quietly.

I had learned something about my daughter over the past few days.

When she was angry, she spoke.

When she was afraid, she cried.

But when she went completely silent, that was when she was hurting the most.

"She was my friend."

Her voice was low.

I reached for her hand.

"Sweetheart."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I need to say it."

She looked at the table.

"I trusted her."

Nobody interrupted.

"She helped me pick my wedding dress."

A pause.

"She knew how nervous I was."

Another pause.

"She told me Javier was lucky."

Her eyes filled.

"She knew exactly how much I loved him."

Alexander looked away.

Because betrayal from strangers was one thing.

Betrayal from someone who knew where your heart was located was something else.

Rebecca gathered the documents.

"We need to find Melissa before she destroys the evidence."

Alexander looked at her.

"Do we know where she is?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"Her phone is off."

"Her car?"

"Not at her home."

I felt a cold feeling.

People who disappear after being exposed are rarely innocent.

Sofia stood.

"I know where she might go."

Everyone looked at her.

"Where?"

She hesitated.

"The old family house."

Javier's childhood home.

The place Carmen still owned.

The place where the Robles family kept everything they considered valuable.

Rebecca immediately wrote it down.

"Why there?"

Sofia looked at the floor.

"Because Melissa told me something once."

"What?"

"She said her mother kept copies of everything."

Alexander looked at Rebecca.

"Everything?"

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"Original documents."

The phrase from the message.

Original documents.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The fake agreements.

The copied signatures.

The hidden records.

The truth had been somewhere else the entire time.

"Let's go."

Alexander grabbed his jacket.

Sofia looked at him.

"I should come."

"No."

The answer came immediately.

She looked hurt.

"I need to."

Alexander softened.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Not because I think you are weak."

She looked at him.

"Because you have spent days being forced to face people who hurt you."

A pause.

"Today, you watch us protect you."

That was the first time I saw Sofia look at her father without the pain of the past between them.

Just trust.

A few hours later, we arrived at the Robles family house.

It was exactly what I expected.

Large.

Expensive.

Perfect from the outside.

The kind of home people admired.

The kind of home where nobody asked what happened behind closed doors.

Rebecca stayed near the car.

Alexander walked ahead.

Sofia stood beside me.

I noticed something.

She was not shaking.

Not anymore.

The fear had not disappeared.

But it no longer controlled her.

That mattered.

The front door was locked.

Alexander knocked.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then Sofia stepped forward.

"Melissa?"

Silence.

A few seconds passed.

Then we heard movement.

Someone inside.

Alexander immediately looked at Rebecca.

She nodded.

The door opened slowly.

But nobody was standing there.

It had been unlocked.

We entered carefully.

The house was dark.

Too dark.

The furniture was covered.

The air smelled like a place that had been abandoned.

But someone had been there recently.

A glass sat on the kitchen counter.

A coat was hanging near the entrance.

Someone had left quickly.

Rebecca searched the living room.

Alexander checked the hallway.

Sofia stood beside me.

Then she saw something.

"Mom."

I followed her eyes.

On the wall was a framed photograph.

A family picture.

Javier.

Melissa.

Carmen.

And Sofia.

Taken three weeks before the wedding.

Sofia stared at it.

"I didn't know this existed."

I looked closer.

The photograph had been altered.

Someone had cut Sofia out and replaced her with something else.

A document.

A contract.

A message.

Rebecca took the frame down.

Behind it was a small safe.

Alexander looked at Sofia.

"Do you know the combination?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Rebecca examined it.

"This is newer."

She touched the metal.

"It was installed recently."

My heart started racing.

Because whoever installed it had expected someone to find it.

Alexander tried the obvious combinations.

Nothing.

Then Sofia whispered:

"Wait."

Everyone stopped.

She looked at the safe.

"Carmen had a phrase."

"What phrase?"

Sofia swallowed.

"Family first."

Rebecca entered it.

The safe opened.

Inside were files.

Dozens of them.

Bank records.

Property documents.

Photographs.

And one envelope with Sofia's name written on it.

Her hands trembled.

She reached for it.

Alexander stopped her.

"Wait."

But Sofia looked at him.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"This is mine."

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Not from Carmen.

Not from Javier.

From Melissa.

Sofia read the first line.

Then her face changed.

"What?"

She handed it to Rebecca.

Rebecca read silently.

Then looked up.

"This changes everything."

Alexander took the letter.

His eyes moved across the page.

And then he stopped.

Because at the bottom was a date.

A date before Sofia and Javier ever met.

A date that proved the plan had started years earlier.

And beneath it was one final sentence written by Melissa:

"I didn't betray Sofia."

She turned the page.

"I was trying to warn her."

The room went silent.

Because the person we thought had helped destroy Sofia's life had left behind a message explaining something completely different.

Then Alexander's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

He listened.

Then his face changed.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

His grip tightened around the phone.

Then he looked directly at Sofia.

May you like

And whispered:

"Your mother-in-law has your father."
