Chapter 5 - The Husband Who Stood Outside the Door

The elevator stopped on my floor.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The sound was small.
Just a quiet mechanical click.
But inside my apartment, it felt louder than anything else that had happened that night.
Alexander looked at the hallway camera on my phone.
Then at Sofia.
Then at me.
"Stay here."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
I knew that voice.
It was the voice he used when he was afraid but refused to show it.
Sofia immediately grabbed his arm.
"No."
He looked down at her.
"They know where we are."
"I don't care."
"You should."
Her eyes filled.
"I just got you back."
That sentence stopped him.
For a moment, Alexander was not a colonel.
Not a man who knew how to handle danger.
He was just a father who had heard his daughter say she was afraid of losing him again.
He placed his hand over hers.
"I am not leaving."
Then the elevator doors opened.
We waited.
The hallway camera showed nothing.
No footsteps.
No movement.
Just an empty hallway.
Rebecca stood slowly.
"That is worse."
I looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"If someone wanted to scare us, they would want us to see them."
She looked toward the door.
"If nobody is there, they either changed their mind..."
She paused.
"Or they were never coming to the door."
Alexander immediately understood.
He walked toward the windows.
The same windows where the photo had been taken.
He looked outside.
Then he stopped.
"What?"
I moved closer.
He pointed.
Across the street.
A black SUV was parked near the corner.
Engine running.
Lights off.
Sofia saw it.
Her face changed.
"I know that car."
My heart sank.
"Who?"
She whispered:
"Javier."
Alexander turned.
"Are you sure?"
She nodded.
"I saw it at the hotel."
Nobody spoke.
The man who abandoned her.
The man who stood outside the door.
The man who let his mother hurt her.
Was now outside my apartment.
Rebecca picked up her phone.
"Do not approach him."
Alexander looked at her.
"You think he came alone?"
"I think we stop assuming anything."
That sentence stayed with me.
Because we had spent months assuming.
Assuming Javier loved Sofia.
Assuming Carmen cared about family.
Assuming a wedding meant protection.
Every assumption had been used against my daughter.
Alexander moved away from the window.
"We need evidence."
Rebecca nodded.
"Exactly."
She looked at Sofia.
"Did Javier ever ask for your passwords?"
Sofia hesitated.
Then looked away.
That hesitation was enough.
"Sofia."
She closed her eyes.
"Once."
My stomach tightened.
"When?"
"After we got engaged."
"What did he say?"
She swallowed.
"He said married couples shouldn't have secrets."
Alexander's expression darkened.
"And did you give them to him?"
"No."
A small moment of relief.
Then she added:
"But..."
Everyone looked at her.
"But what?"
"He knew my phone password."
The room went silent.
"How?"
"I told him once."
"When?"
"Months ago."
Rebecca wrote something down.
"What else did he have access to?"
Sofia looked terrified.
"I don't know."
That was the answer I feared most.
Not knowing.
Because not knowing meant there could be more.
Rebecca walked to the table.
"We need to separate facts from fear."
She pointed at the documents.
"Fact one. Someone created fraudulent paperwork."
She pointed at the phone.
"Fact two. Someone is monitoring your movements."
Then she looked at Sofia.
"Fact three. Your husband knew personal information that could help them."
Alexander's face hardened.
"So Javier was involved."
Rebecca did not answer immediately.
That bothered me.
Because lawyers were careful with words.
Especially when the truth was dangerous.
"I think Javier knows more than he admitted."
Sofia looked down.
The pain on her face was worse than the bruises.
Because a bruise came from a hand.
Betrayal came from someone you trusted.
"I loved him."
Her voice was almost silent.
Nobody answered.
Because there was nothing to say.
People always talk about heartbreak like it is sadness.
They never explain the confusion.
The way your mind keeps searching for the person you loved inside the person who hurt you.
The way you remember good moments and hate yourself for remembering them.
Sofia had not only lost a husband.
She had lost the future she thought she was building.
A few hours later, Rebecca received a call.
She stepped away.
We watched her expression change.
Then she ended the call.
"What happened?"
She looked at Sofia.
"The hotel found security footage."
Everyone became still.
"What does it show?"
Rebecca sat down.
"It shows Carmen entering the honeymoon suite."
Sofia looked relieved for half a second.
Then Rebecca continued.
"With Javier."
The relief disappeared.
"What?"
"He was not outside the entire time."
Sofia stared.
Rebecca opened her laptop.
"He entered the room before his mother."
My daughter covered her mouth.
"No."
Alexander leaned forward.
"What did he do?"
Rebecca looked at the screen.
"The footage cuts off."
"Why?"
"Because someone disabled the camera."
The room went silent.
"Who?"
"We are trying to find out."
Sofia shook her head.
"I don't understand."
I held her hand.
"Sweetheart..."
"No."
She looked at all of us.
"I don't understand."
Her voice cracked.
"He told me he loved me."
Nobody interrupted.
"He promised he would protect me."
Tears fell.
"And then he handed me to them."
Alexander looked away.
Because he could not watch his daughter break again.
Then Rebecca's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Her face changed.
"What?"
She stood.
"Are you sure?"
A pause.
Then:
"Send it."
She ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
Rebecca looked at Alexander.
"The hotel found something."
"What?"
"A recording."
Sofia froze.
"What recording?"
Rebecca slowly turned the laptop around.
"The hallway audio."
My heart started racing.
"From the night of the wedding?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
Alexander stared at the screen.
"Play it."
Rebecca hesitated.
Then pressed the file.
At first, there was only noise.
A hallway.
Distant voices.
Then Javier's voice.
Clear.
Cold.
"I told you she would sign."
Sofia stopped breathing.
Alexander's hand closed into a fist.
Then Carmen answered.
"Your wife is stubborn."
A pause.
Then Javier spoke again.
And this time, every person in the room heard the sentence that changed everything.
"She won't be my wife much longer."
Sofia looked at the screen.
Completely frozen.
Because the recording had been taken before she was attacked.
And Javier had already planned what would happen next.
Then the audio continued.
A third voice appeared.
A voice Sofia recognized immediately.
A voice she never expected to hear.
May you like
Her own father looked at her.
Because the final words on the recording were spoken by someone who had been invited to the wedding.
