Chapter 10 - The Father They Tried to Silence

"Your mother-in-law has your father."

For a moment, nobody understood what Alexander meant.

Not because the words were unclear.

Because they were impossible.

Sofia stared at him.

"My father?"

Alexander nodded.

"The call."

His voice was controlled.

Too controlled.

"Carmen has him."

The room changed instantly.

The files on the table.

The hidden documents.

The letter from Melissa.

Everything disappeared behind one thought.

Alexander was in danger.

I stepped closer.

"What did she say?"

He looked at his phone.

"She didn't."

Rebecca frowned.

"Then how do you know it was Carmen?"

Alexander turned the screen toward us.

There was a video file.

A message had arrived while he was on the call.

One word.

PLAY.

Nobody moved.

Then Alexander opened it.

The screen showed a dark room.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a light turned on.

And we saw him.

Daniel Brooks.

Sitting in a chair.

His hands tied.

His face bruised.

But alive.

Sofia covered her mouth.

"Uncle Daniel."

Rebecca looked shocked.

Because the man who had helped create the plan was now trapped inside it.

Then Carmen walked into the frame.

She looked exactly the same as she had at the wedding.

Perfect hair.

Perfect clothes.

Perfect smile.

As if she were not standing in front of someone she had kidnapped.

"You should have listened."

Her voice was calm.

Daniel looked at her.

"You are insane."

Carmen smiled.

"No."

She stepped closer.

"I am the only person who understood what was happening."

The video paused.

Then another message appeared.

A location.

Alexander immediately grabbed his jacket.

"I'm going."

Rebecca stopped him.

"No."

He turned.

"My brother is there."

"And walking into a trap is exactly what she wants."

Alexander looked at the screen.

"What choice do I have?"

Rebecca pointed at the video.

"Think."

That word stopped him.

Because that was what Alexander always did.

He thought.

Even when everything inside him wanted to act.

"We don't know if Daniel is the only person there."

Rebecca continued.

"We don't know if Carmen has anyone else with her."

Sofia stood.

"I know where it is."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the location.

"The old Robles warehouse."

I felt cold.

"You know that place?"

She nodded.

"Javier took me there once."

The name alone hurt.

But Sofia continued.

"He said his family stored old business records there."

Rebecca looked at the location.

"That explains the documents."

Alexander looked at Sofia.

"Can you identify the building?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

There was no fear in her voice.

Only determination.

That scared me more.

Because my daughter was no longer running away.

She was going back.

But this time, she was not going alone.

We arrived twenty minutes later.

The warehouse sat on the edge of the city.

Old.

Quiet.

Forgotten.

The kind of place people chose when they wanted secrets to disappear.

Alexander parked away from the entrance.

Rebecca contacted authorities.

Nobody moved until she received confirmation.

Then we went inside.

The door was already open.

That bothered Alexander.

A trap did not need a locked door.

Sometimes it invited you in.

The inside was dark.

Dust covered the floor.

Old equipment sat against the walls.

And somewhere deeper inside, we heard a voice.

Daniel.

"Please."

A pause.

Then:

"You already destroyed enough."

Sofia froze.

Because she recognized another voice.

Carmen.

"Destroyed?"

She laughed.

"You still don't understand."

We moved closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The room opened ahead of us.

Carmen stood in the center.

Daniel was tied to a chair.

And beside Carmen stood Javier.

Sofia stopped breathing.

The man who had broken her heart.

The man she had married.

The man she had defended.

Was standing there.

Alive.

Uninjured.

And calm.

"I knew you would come."

His eyes moved to Sofia.

Not Alexander.

Not me.

Sofia.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Sofia whispered:

"Why?"

Javier looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because it meant he still knew he was wrong.

"You don't understand."

Sofia laughed softly.

A painful sound.

"I think I understand everything."

Carmen stepped forward.

"Sofia."

Alexander immediately moved between them.

"Stay away from my daughter."

Carmen smiled.

"There he is."

She looked at Alexander.

"The father who thinks he can fix everything."

Alexander's face remained calm.

"You kidnapped my brother."

Carmen looked at Daniel.

"He betrayed us."

Daniel shouted:

"You tried to steal from your own daughter-in-law."

Carmen ignored him.

Then she looked back at Sofia.

"You ruined everything."

Sofia stared.

"I ruined everything?"

"Yes."

Carmen's voice became colder.

"You were supposed to make this easy."

Sofia looked confused.

"What?"

Javier finally spoke.

"Sofia..."

She looked at him.

"Don't."

One word.

But it stopped him.

"I spent months defending you."

Her voice shook.

"I told my mother she was wrong."

A tear moved down her face.

"I told myself you were different."

Javier looked guilty.

But not enough.

Never enough.

"I loved you."

Sofia nodded.

"I know."

A pause.

"That's why it worked."

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the truth.

They did not manipulate someone who hated them.

They manipulated someone who trusted them.

Carmen stepped closer.

"You think this ends with us losing?"

Rebecca's voice came from behind.

"No."

Everyone turned.

She had entered with two officers.

"The end is already here."

Carmen's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Because for the first time, she realized she was not controlling the room.

Javier looked toward the exit.

One officer immediately blocked him.

Daniel lowered his head.

Not from fear.

From shame.

Sofia looked at him.

"You knew."

He did not answer.

"You knew they would hurt me."

Still nothing.

Then Daniel whispered:

"I thought they were only going to scare you."

Sofia stared.

"And that makes it better?"

He looked away.

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"It doesn't."

Carmen suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

"You still don't understand."

Rebecca frowned.

"What?"

Carmen smiled.

"The documents."

She looked at Sofia.

"The originals are gone."

Silence.

"What originals?"

Carmen smiled wider.

"The ones proving everything."

Rebecca's expression changed.

Because she knew exactly what Carmen meant.

The original trust documents.

The original agreements.

The evidence.

Carmen looked at Alexander.

"You came here because you thought you were saving everyone."

A pause.

"But you are too late."

She reached into her coat.

And pulled out a small envelope.

Sofia stared.

Because she recognized it.

It was the same type of envelope that had been hidden behind the photograph.

Carmen held it up.

"The truth has always belonged to the person holding the paper."

Alexander stepped forward.

"Carmen."

She smiled.

Then she opened the envelope.

And removed the first page.

Her expression changed.

For the first time that night.

She looked afraid.

Because the document inside was not what she expected.

It had a different signature.

A different date.

May you like

And one name written across the top.

A name that made everyone in the room turn toward Sofia.
