Chapter 7 - The Family That Thought They Had Won

The name at the bottom of the document was not Javier.
It was not Carmen.
It was not Melissa.
It was mine.
For several seconds, I thought I had read it incorrectly.
I looked again.
Then again.
But the signature remained.
Elena Brooks.
My name.
My handwriting.
My signature.
Except I had never signed that document.
"What is this?"
My voice sounded different.
Even to me.
Alexander looked at the page.
Then at me.
"Elena."
I shook my head.
"No."
Sofia stared between us.
"Mom?"
I could not answer.
Because the truth was impossible.
Someone had copied my signature.
Someone had used my name.
Someone had created a document connecting me to a plan I knew nothing about.
Rebecca immediately took the paper from Alexander.
"Nobody touches anything else."
She placed it inside a clear folder.
"Where did this come from?"
Alexander looked at the laptop.
"Javier's deleted files."
Rebecca nodded slowly.
"This changes things."
Sofia looked terrified.
"Why?"
Rebecca looked at her.
"Because they didn't just target you."
She looked at me.
"They targeted everyone around you."
The room went silent.
I thought about every conversation.
Every meeting.
Every smile.
Every time Carmen sat across from me pretending to care about my daughter's happiness.
They had not been trying to convince Sofia alone.
They had been building a story.
A story where everyone would believe they had a right to take what belonged to her.
But why include me?
Rebecca examined the document carefully.
"This signature appears to be from years ago."
I frowned.
"Years ago?"
She nodded.
"The copy was modified recently, but the signature itself was taken from another document."
My stomach tightened.
"What document?"
She looked at Alexander.
Then at me.
"That is what we need to find out."
Alexander stood.
"I have old documents."
Rebecca looked at him.
"From when?"
"After our divorce."
I looked at him.
"What documents?"
He hesitated.
Then answered:
"The condo trust paperwork."
Everything stopped.
Because suddenly, I understood.
My signature.
The trust.
The condo.
They did not just want Sofia's property.
They wanted the documents that protected it.
And somehow, they had found a way to connect me to their plan.
"They used our divorce papers."
Alexander looked at me.
"Maybe."
Rebecca nodded.
"It would explain the signature."
I felt sick.
Because that meant this had started long before the wedding.
Not days.
Not weeks.
Months.
Maybe longer.
Sofia sat quietly.
I looked at her.
She was listening.
Trying to understand how the people who claimed to love her had built a trap around her.
"I don't understand."
Her voice was small.
"How could they do this?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Because the truth was ugly.
Some people do not see kindness as kindness.
They see it as weakness.
They see generosity as an opportunity.
They see love as something they can exploit.
Alexander sat beside her.
"They thought they knew us."
Sofia looked at him.
"They thought they knew what we would do."
He looked at the documents.
"They were wrong."
That afternoon, Rebecca contacted the law firm that handled the condo trust.
The response came within hours.
And when she read the email, her expression changed.
"What?"
I asked.
She looked up.
"The original trust documents were accessed three weeks ago."
Alexander immediately stood.
"By who?"
Rebecca turned the screen.
"Someone claiming to represent Sofia."
Sofia looked confused.
"I never authorized anyone."
"Exactly."
Rebecca continued reading.
"The request came from a legal assistant at a Dallas firm."
"Which firm?"
Rebecca paused.
Then said:
"Robles Legal Group."
Nobody spoke.
Carmen.
Her own family law office.
They had used their own connections.
Their own paperwork.
Their own people.
Everything was designed to look legitimate.
Sofia covered her face.
"I married into this."
The pain in her voice was unbearable.
I moved beside her.
"No."
She looked at me.
"I did."
I held her hand.
"You trusted someone."
A tear fell.
"That's the worst part."
Alexander looked toward the window.
"We need to find Javier."
Sofia immediately looked afraid.
"Why?"
"Because he knows everything."
Rebecca nodded.
"Agreed."
She picked up her phone.
"We need to know whether he was the planner or just the person they used."
That question bothered me.
Because I had spent years believing Javier was the problem.
But maybe he was only one piece.
Maybe the entire family had been involved.
A few hours later, Rebecca found Javier.
Not physically.
Digitally.
His credit card had been used.
His location was tracked.
He was at a hotel downtown.
The same hotel where the wedding reception had happened.
Sofia became pale.
"He's still there?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Apparently."
Alexander grabbed his jacket.
"I'm going."
Rebecca stopped him.
"No."
He looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because if he knows we found this, he will run."
Alexander looked angry.
"Then what do you suggest?"
Rebecca looked at Sofia.
"We let him think he still has control."
Nobody liked that answer.
But it was the right one.
For the first time, we were not chasing them.
We were waiting.
That night, Sofia finally slept.
A real sleep.
No nightmares.
No panic.
Just exhaustion.
I sat in the living room with Alexander.
The man who had once been my husband.
The man who was now sitting beside me protecting our daughter.
"She missed you."
He looked down.
"I know."
"Do you?"
He looked at me.
"Because she spent years pretending she didn't."
His face changed.
"I deserved that."
I did not argue.
Because he did.
But I also knew something else.
People could make mistakes.
They could disappear.
But sometimes they got one chance to come back.
And Alexander had come back.
The next morning, Rebecca arrived early.
She carried a small envelope.
"I found something."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
She placed it on the table.
"This was delivered to the hotel before the wedding."
Alexander opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Not of Sofia.
Not of Javier.
Of me.
Standing outside the condo.
Taken three weeks before the wedding.
I looked at Rebecca.
"Why would they photograph me?"
She did not answer.
Instead, she pulled out another piece of paper.
"A witness came forward."
Alexander looked at her.
"Who?"
Rebecca stared at Sofia.
"The person who delivered the documents to Carmen."
Sofia slowly stood.
"Who?"
Rebecca lowered her voice.
"The wedding planner."
I felt confused.
"What does she know?"
Rebecca looked at the envelope.
"She said Carmen did not create the plan alone."
A pause.
"Someone hired her."
Alexander stepped closer.
"Who?"
Rebecca reached into the folder.
And pulled out a contract.
A contract signed by the person who had paid Carmen Robles to destroy my daughter's marriage.
Sofia looked at the signature.
Then her face went completely white.
Because the person who funded the entire plan was someone we never suspected.
May you like
Someone who had been sitting in our home.
Someone who had been helping us search for the truth.
