Chapter 6 - The Letter Bennett Hid

“I removed it,” Bennett admitted.

Elena stared at him.

“Why?”

“Samuel asked me to.”

Adrian stood.

“My father read Daniel's letter?”

“Yes.”

“And hid it from me?”

“Yes.”

Anger returned.

But Bennett wasn't finished.

Samuel had intended to tell Adrian.

He couldn't.

Not because he was protecting Marcus.

Because Adrian was twenty-eight when Daniel died and preparing to assume control of Vale Holdings.

If the scandal broke then, the company could collapse before victims were compensated.

Samuel made a terrible calculation.

He chose delay.

Then illness took him before he could finish.

Adrian hated the decision.

But he understood it.

That was almost worse.

Good people could make cowardly choices.

Love didn't automatically create courage.

Sometimes courage arrived late.

Adrian refused to let his arrive late.

He restored Daniel's employee record.

He publicly acknowledged Daniel and Jonathan Mercer as whistleblowers.

He renamed the company's ethics foundation after them.

Most importantly, he met every family harmed by the property scheme who agreed to meet him.

He listened.

He apologized.

He paid restitution.

Not from corporate insurance.

From the Vale family's controlling assets.

His board revolted.

Adrian replaced half of them.

Elena watched the transformation from a distance.

She had stopped working at his house.

But somehow she was there more often.

Sometimes with Lily.

Sometimes without her.

Their relationship changed quietly.

Adrian never pushed.

Elena still wore her wedding ring on a chain.

Daniel remained part of her.

Adrian respected that.

One evening, she found Adrian sitting on the kitchen counter eating takeout.

“You own a dining room that seats thirty.”

“I dislike twenty-nine of the chairs.”

She laughed.

“Lily misses you.”

“Lily is eight months old.”

“She says your name.”

“She says ‘Da-da.’”

“She points at your photograph.”

Adrian stared.

“That's concerning.”

Elena smiled.

Then became serious.

“Thank you.”

“For?”

“Not turning Daniel into a scandal.”

Adrian looked down.

“He deserved better.”

“So did you.”

Their eyes met.

Something passed between them.

Neither acted on it.

Not yet.

Months later, Marcus pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, obstruction and charges connected to Daniel's assault and fatal crash.

Cross received a reduced sentence for cooperation.

Bennett retired.

Evelyn began volunteering with the restitution foundation.

Vale Holdings survived.

Smaller.

Less powerful.

Cleaner.

Adrian preferred it that way.

Then, on the anniversary of Daniel's death, Elena asked Adrian to accompany her to the cemetery.

They brought Lily.

Elena placed flowers at Daniel's grave.

Adrian stood back.

After several minutes, Elena touched the stone.

“You found him,” she whispered.

Adrian understood.

Not physically.

Truthfully.

They had recovered Daniel from four years of silence.

Elena turned.

“There's something else.”

She handed Adrian a small box.

Inside was Daniel's watch.

“He wanted you to have it.”

Adrian couldn't speak.

“He wrote it in another note.”

“Are there any more notes?”

Elena smiled through tears.

“I think that's finally the last one.”

Adrian put on the watch.

It fit.

That night, after dropping Elena home, Adrian received an unknown text.

One photograph.

His blood ran cold.

It showed Lily sleeping in her crib.

Taken from inside Elena's apartment.

May you like

Beneath it were six words.

MARCUS WAS NEVER THE LAST ONE.
