Chapter 5 - The Second Voice
Samuel Vale's former security chief, Raymond Cross, stood in the doorway.
He was supposed to be dead.
At least, that's what Adrian had been told.
Cross had disappeared three years earlier.
Marcus claimed he died overseas.
Now he stood inside Adrian's house.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
“Don't call security,” Cross said.
Adrian already had his phone.
“Give me one reason.”
“Because I came to confess.”
Cross placed a recorder on the desk.
He had worked for Marcus.
He admitted following Daniel.
He admitted forcing Daniel's car off the road.
But he insisted Marcus hadn't ordered Daniel killed.
“The order was to scare him.”
Elena stared with hatred.
“You broke his ribs.”
Cross lowered his head.
“Yes.”
“You chased him.”
“Yes.”
“He died.”
“Yes.”
Cross looked destroyed by the admission.
He had disappeared because Marcus paid him.
Then guilt consumed him.
The recorder contained conversations.
Bank transfers.
Instructions.
Enough.
Police arrested Cross that night.
Marcus was arrested the next morning.
The story exploded publicly.
Vale Holdings stock fell.
Reporters surrounded Adrian's estate.
Elena wanted to leave.
“You shouldn't be trapped here because of me,” she said.
“You're not.”
“I work for you.”
“Not anymore.”
She stiffened.
Adrian realized how it sounded.
“I mean you don't have to.”
“Are you firing me?”
“No.”
He almost laughed.
“I'm doing this badly.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel's trust belongs partly to you and Lily.”
Elena stared.
Bennett confirmed it.
Samuel had created the trust to compensate Daniel and preserve his share of recovered assets.
It was worth millions.
Elena sat down.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I don't want millions.”
“You wanted twenty-eight dollars.”
She laughed despite herself.
Then cried.
Adrian sat beside her.
“You'll never have to make that phone call again.”
Elena looked at Lily.
“That was all I wanted.”
Not wealth.
Security.
Formula.
Rent.
A future where one emergency didn't destroy everything.
The criminal case moved quickly.
Cross testified.
Marcus's accounts were uncovered.
Families came forward.
Adrian testified too.
He refused to protect the Vale name.
That cost him board support.
He didn't care.
Then prosecutors discovered something unexpected.
Marcus had preserved records.
Not from stupidity.
From insurance.
Those records proved Adrian's grandfather had orchestrated the scheme decades earlier.
They also proved Samuel had spent his final years secretly dismantling it.
Adrian's father had been trying to repair the damage.
Daniel helped him.
The truth was uglier than Adrian wanted.
But it wasn't hopeless.
Weeks passed.
Elena moved into a better apartment.
Not a mansion.
Not anything extravagant.
A sunny two-bedroom near her mother.
She insisted on choosing it herself.
Adrian helped carry boxes.
“You have movers,” she said.
“I know.”
“You own a moving company.”
“Technically.”
“And you're carrying a lamp.”
“I'm versatile.”
Lily sat in a box and laughed.
Life began moving forward.
Then Adrian found another letter inside Daniel's blue envelope.
It had slipped beneath the lining.
His name was written across it.
Adrian.
He sat alone before opening it.
Daniel's handwriting filled three pages.
He explained Jonathan.
Samuel.
The investigation.
Then the final paragraph changed everything.
If I don't make it, don't spend your life punishing the people who failed me. Protect the people who come after us. That's how this ends.
Adrian read it repeatedly.
Elena found him later.
He gave it to her.
She cried.
Then smiled.
“That sounds like him.”
Adrian nodded.
For the first time, Daniel wasn't a mystery.
He was family.
But one question remained.
Who had removed the letter from the evidence four years earlier?
Only three people had handled the blue envelope.
Elena.
Bennett.
And Samuel.
Samuel was dead.
Elena hadn't done it.
Adrian looked at Bennett.
The attorney's expression told him everything.
